Citizens on Patrol in Woodlawn

Citizens on Patrol volunteers will begin patrolling in the Woodlawn area in two specially marked vehicles that will be unveiled on Monday, May 13th at 10:00 am at the Woodlawn Municipal Parking lot – 5504 1st Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35212. The Mayor’s Office of Community Policing and Revitalization in partnership with Woodlawn Foundation and the Birmingham Police Department implemented the Birmingham Citizens on Patrol Volunteer Program in August of 2012.

The Citizens on Patrol Volunteer Program is designed to provide a visible presence on the streets as a deterrent to criminal activity through the assistance of civilian volunteers. Citizens on Patrol volunteers are not Peace Officers and do not carry weapons; instead, they depend on their training and their ability to quickly relay information to law enforcement in their “observe and report” role. Citizens on Patrol volunteers provide additional eyes and ears to law enforcement by diligently patrolling designated areas and reporting any unusual activity.

All of the Citizens on Patrol volunteers passed background checks and completed 10 weeks of training on: Patrol Techniques, Writing Reports, Radio Procedures, Traffic Control and Emergency Procedures.

The Woodlawn Foundation provided full funding for this program which has allowed for the purchase of two C.O.P. vehicles, uniforms and technical equipment necessary for the volunteers. The Citizens on Patrol Volunteer Program will initially begin patrolling in the pilot area of Woodlawn, but the goal is to eventually expand and spread this program to communities throughout the city.
