City of Poughkeepsie Police Department
Robbery Arrest Made on High Street
On Friday, May 24, at 1:58 a.m., the driver of a local cab company reported that a subject had just attempted to rob him at gunpoint on High Street. The driver reported he was sent to High Street to pick up a fare going to Roosevelt Avenue. When the driver arrived, the fare was standing in the road and asked him to open the trunk; when the driver got out of the cab to help get the trunk open the subject tried to pull a gun out of his waistband. A struggle ensued over the gun and eventually the driver ran from the area to the police station. During a search of the area by officers, Mark Jones, a 23-year-old City of Poughkeepsie resident, was stopped and identified as being the one who was responsible for the attempted robbery. He was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted robbery and criminal possession of marijuana. He was held pending arraignment.
City of Poughkeepsie Police are also investigating the robbery of a pizza delivery driver that occurred just hours earlier on Thursday, May 23, at 10:44 p.m. on Davis Street. The driver and a passenger in his vehicle were both robbed at gunpoint by three males who fled the area on foot. Two subjects matching the description of the robbers were located but fled from police; one was subsequently stopped and brought to headquarters for investigation. He was later released. That investigation continues.
There have been several robberies recently in the north side of the city of delivery and cab drivers, all involving suspects described as young black males. Anyone with information about any of these incidents is urged to contact the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department confidential tip line at (845) 451-7577.
