Police Warn of Computer Scam

A City of Poughkeepsie resident reported to police today that she was the victim of identity theft via a computer scam.  The victim reported that she was contacted via telephone by a male subject with an Indian accent who identified himself as a customer service representative for Windows. This subject told the victim that her computer had been infected with a virus and he provided her with instructions to allow him remote access to her machine. The scammer used a legitimate software development company, Ammyy Admin, to gain remote access to her computer. This scam is known to Ammyy Admin which advises computer users to treat unsolicited calls with skepticism and not to grant anyone remote access to your computer unless that person is known to you.

Anyone who was the victim of this type of scam is urged to contact their banks and credit card companies and freeze their accounts in addition to checking their computer for viruses.
