Police Warn of Telephone Scam

City of Poughkeepsie Police are warning the public about a telephone scam in which individuals are calling prospective victims and informing them that a loved one was either involved in an accident or has been arrested. The caller then solicits funds for medical care, lawyer fees or bail to be wired via Western Union.

The callers are soliciting information regarding the loved ones from the victim by asking leading questions such as “do you have a relative that drives?” “what kind of car does he/she operate?”, etc.

If you receive a call informing you that a relative has been in an accident or arrested, do not provide any personal information about yourself or loved ones, take the caller’s information (if they will provide it), do not wire any money, and contact City Police at (845) 451-4000.
