60th Handgun Recovered in City This Year

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013 at 10:33 a.m. Officer John Morris observed a taxi violating several vehicle and traffic laws. He stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Worrall Avenue and the eastbound arterial. The front seat passenger, TAFARI S LEWIS, a 22-year-old city resident, began fumbling through the glove box and then fled on foot from the vehicle. Other members of the City of Poughkeepsie Police observed LEWIS throw a handgun into the backyard of a house off Worrall Avenue. LEWIS was arrested by officers shortly after.
The handgun, a 9mm Hi Point was recovered and found to be stolen out of Virginia.
LEWIS was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree, a C felony, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, also a felony. He is being held pending arraignment. The taxi driver was charged with several Vehicle and Traffic Violations and City Ordinance Violations.
This makes the 60th handgun recovered in the City so far this year.
