Town Police Warn of Phone Scam
Town of Poughkeepsie Police have received two complaints of a phone scam involving MoneyPak cards. The victims are told that they need to pay their Central Hudson Bill or their service will be cut off. The victims are told to go to the pharmacy and put money on a MoneyPak card.
Both victims were directed to call (917) 460-4468 x2323 after purchasing the card and to give the account number on the card to the representative to pay the bill. In one of these cases, the money from the MoneyPak card was placed on an unknown person's American Express Card. The victim then contacted Central Hudson and was advised that there was no problem with her account and that her account was already up to date.
While City of Poughkeepsie Police have received no reports of such incidents, citizens are reminded to verify the identity of anyone requesting money and/or payments over the phone.
