Man Arrested for Stolen Gun
On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 6:45 p.m. officers from the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Main Street near Vassar Street. The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Reges L. Bellamy, a city resident, was found to have three warrants from the New York State Police. As Bellamy was being taken into custody he was found to possess a stun gun disguised as a cell phone and a can of pepper spray.
The passenger of the car, 28-year-old Issa I. Islam, also a city resident, was found to be in possession of a Colt 45 semi-automatic handgun which had been reported stolen from the Town of Esopus in August of 2011. Islam was also found to be in possession of 17 bags of heroin.
Bellamy was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the fourth degree, a Class A misdemeanor. Islam was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree, a Class C felony, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the fourth degree, an E felony, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree, an A misdemeanor. Both were held pending their arraignment.
This is the 12th handgun recovered in the City this year.
