Boston Police: E-5 West Roxbury

VANDALISM AT HYNES FIELD

On Monday August 25th 2008 officers from area E-5 responded to Hynes Field at 520 VFW PKWY for a report of vandalism. On arrival officers spoke to the Superintended of Parks Mr. Charlie Rideout and Mr. Leif Fixen, also of the parks dept. Sometime between Sunday August 24th at 9:00 pm and Monday August 25th at 5:00am, unknown persons cut down 10 trees (7 Red Maple and 3 Honey Locust), damaged a park sign, and damaged a park bench. Officers and detectives observed the trees, which had been moved prior to arrival. The trees were initially located inside the playground area arranged in such a manner as to camouflage any activity going on in the playground. Several beer cans were recovered as well as items of clothing. A handsaw was also recovered in the woods behind the damaged park bench. Park workers recovered a small bag with various sex devices and condoms inside. The scene was photographed and processed by District Detectives.

The Boston Police Department of Area 5 is outraged and sympathizes with the residents in the West Roxbury community. Hynes Filed was just recently renovated and with the addition of the sprinklers it has become a place for families to come and spend summer days with their children. It is appalling that individuals would have such lack of respect for not only the area in which they live, but also those who find joy in using Hynes Field; particularly the young children.

With the long weekend approaching before the start of the new school year the officers of District 5 will take into consideration the inappropriate use of the playground areas and other known “hot spots.”  The City of Boston Parks are closed at 10:00pm (if open later it is posted on park signs).  Officers will be enforcing this regulation and any individuals not adhering to this law will be arrested.

If you have any information regarding this incident please contact the District Detectives at: 617.343.4566.
