Celebratory Gun Fire

New Years Celebratory Gun Fire Can Lead to Death

Many times individuals involved in celebrating New Year’s Eve with gunfire do not realize the dangers posed by their actions. Researchers report that a bullet fired into the air can climb two miles into the air and remain in flight for more than a minute. As it falls, the bullet reaches a velocity of 300 to 700 feet per second. A velocity of only 200 feet per second is sufficient to penetrate the human skull.

Shooting a gun into the air is a felony.

If you’re arrested for shooting a gun into the air, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

If a stray bullet from your gun should kill someone, you will be arrested and charged with murder.

People involved in celebrating the holidays by shooting their guns do not realize the danger posed by their actions.

A bullet fired into the air can climb up to two miles. When it falls back to earth, it can reach a speed of 300 to 700 feet per second.

If you ever see someone fire a gun into the air, call the police.

Celebrate the holidays safely and responsibly. Don’t fire guns into the air.

Anyone with information about this or any other crime is asked to call Police Dispatch at 513-765-1212 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 513-352-3040. To send a text message, type CINTIP and the message, and then send it to CRIMES (that is, 274637). Callers may remain anonymous and may receive compensation for their information.

Holiday Travel Safety Reminder

Taking a trip this Holiday Season?

Travel can be stressful; it is even more exaggerated by the holidays. Everybody is in a rush trying to make it from one place to another, and it can be hard to make sure that you have all your affairs in order while you worry about making it to your destination in one piece. The holiday traveling season is the busiest time to travel with many people on the roads. It is important to keep safety your number one concern when traveling this holiday season.

Here are a few holiday travel safety tips for uneventful travel this season.

Know Your Route: Make sure you are comfortable with the directions. Before you leave check traffic on Google’s Traffic Mapping website traffic information, detours, and road construction in case you need to find an alternate route [http://maps.google.com/].

Pack for all Sorts of Weather Conditions: Make sure your car is prepped and ready for any weather. Bring chains in case of snow, make sure your windshield wipers and wiper fluid are working properly and full, and put together a kit that contains the following items: a snow scraper, a shovel, a flashlight, blankets, a set of jumper cables, flares, and a first aid kit.

Do a Safety Check-Up on Your Car: Make sure your car isn’t in need of an oil change and check the tire pressure, brake fluid and windshield wipers. Keep an old cell phone that is charged in the car for emergencies. Even if you don’t have a service plan for your phone you can always dial 911.

Keep Your Plans to Yourself: As excited as you may be about your upcoming vacation and travel plans, do not post them online anywhere like Facebook. Publicly posting about your holiday travel plans lets everyone know you will be out of town and your house is unattended.

Secure Your Home While You are Gone: Have your mails [https://holdmail.usps.com/holdmail/]held and newspaper delivery service suspended so newspapers aren’t lying in your driveway letting thieves know that your house is unattended. Turn off the water to your washing machine and double check that all windows and doors are locked. Would-be burglars know this is a busy travel period and will stake out neighborhoods. Utilize a home security system to randomly turn on lights in the home so there isn’t a clear pattern.

Tell Your Neighbors: By letting your neighbors know you’ll be away, they can be your eyes and ears, making sure no one is violating your home while you are away. Encourage neighbors to park in your driveway, shovel snow and make your home look occupied. Many burglars look for homes that have no tracks in the snow two or three days after a snow event.

If you are driving to your destination this holiday season, make sure to always follow the traffic and speed laws and make sure everyone in your car is buckled up.

If you have additional questions or concerns, contact the neighborhood policing unit at your nearest Cincinnati Police District:

District One (Central, South) 513 352-3505

	District Two (East) 513 979-4400

	District Three (West) 513 263-8300

District Four (Central East) 513 569-8600

District Five (Central West) 513 569-8500

Crime Prevention Tip ? Holiday Safety

Crime Prevention Tip – Holiday Safety

The holiday season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware.

	Driving

	- Avoid driving alone or at night.

	- Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device.

	- If you must shop at night, park in a well-lit area.

	- Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.

	- Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked.

	- Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.

	- Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight.

	- Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car.

	- Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door.

	- When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings.

	- Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.

	- Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.

	Automated Teller Machine (ATM)

	- If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside a police station, mall, or well-lighted location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need.

	- Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you.

	- Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.

	Shopping

	- Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

	- Dress casually and comfortably.

	- Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

	- Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible.

	- Always carry your driver’s License or identification card along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

	- Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings.

	- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

	- Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible.

	- Keep cash in your front pocket.

	- Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.

	- Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

	- Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, bus stops, on buses and other areas of rapid transit.

	- Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.

	- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

	Children

	- If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter.

	- Teach your child to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your child is separated from you.

	- Teach children to stay close to you at all times while shopping.

	- Never allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.

	- Children should never be allowed to go to the car alone and they should never be left alone in the car.

	- Teach children their full name, address and telephone number to give to police officers or mall security. Teach children to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them.

	At Home

Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes.

When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail.

Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer.

Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.

Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.

When setting up a Christmas tree or other holiday display, make sure doors and passageways are clear inside your home.

Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children, elderly persons or family pets cannot pull it over on themselves.

If you use lights on your Christmas tree ensure the wiring is not damaged or frayed. Frayed or damaged wiring can cause a fire.

Place your Christmas tree in water or wet sand to keep it green.

Never place wrapping paper in your fireplace.

	Strangers at Your Door

Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts.

It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during the holiday season by soliciting donations door-to-door for charitable causes although no charity is involved.

Ask for their identification, and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate.

Donate to a recognized charitable organization.

	Hosting a Party

Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.

Find alternative transportation for intoxicated guests.

Arrange for an official designated driver for your party who will not drink at all.

	Attending a Party

Have something to eat before consuming alcoholic beverages.

Eat high protein foods that will stay in your stomach longer and slow the absorption of alcohol into your system.

Remember only time will eliminate the alcohol from your body.

		Know your safe limit.

		Never drink and drive.

The Cincinnati Police Department is forwarding this information on behalf of the Ohio Department of Aging

FYI: CONSUMER ALERT: Possible scam involving Golden Buckeye program

We've been made aware of a potential scam in which an individual called a consumer and claimed to represent the State of Ohio and the Ohio's Best Rx program. The caller falsely said the state was issuing or re-issuing Ohio's Best Rx cards and that she needed information, such as bank account number or social security number, to verify the consumer's identity. Since the Golden Buckeye program is affiliated with the Ohio's Best Rx program, the Ohio Department of Aging is notifying consumers to be on the lookout for this scam and avoid falling victim.

No representative of the Golden Buckeye or Ohio's Best Rx programs will contact cardholders for personal or financial information. We believe these calls are part of a scam to gain access to consumers' financial accounts or to steal victims' identities. If you receive such a call, do not provide any information to the caller and end the call immediately.

If you received a call and provided personal information, please contact local law enforcement as soon as possible to report a potential scam.

For assistance and more information about consumer scams, contact the Attorney General's Office Help Center at 1-800-282-0515.

Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins on Halloween

NCPC and McGruff Share Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is just around the corner and many neighborhoods will see ghosts, ghouls, and goblins floating through the streets on October 31, 2010. The Cincinnati Police Department along with the National Crime Prevention Council, home of McGruff the Crime Dog, suggests that parents follow these few tips to assure that their children enjoy a safe and fun-filled evening.

	Remember the following tips.

Clear your yard and sidewalk of any obstacles or decorations that may be hard to see in the dark, lest someone go bump in the night.

Keep your house well lighted on both the inside and outside.

Ask your Neighborhood Watch or local citizens’ group to patrol your community.

Report any suspicious or criminal activities to your police or sheriff’s department.

Follow these tips to make sure even the scariest costumes are safe.

Try makeup instead of masks; it does not obstruct vision the way masks can.

Keep costumes short to ensure that the only trip taken is the one around the neighborhood.

Look for brightly colored costumes, attach reflector strips to costumes and bags, and remind trick-or-treaters to carry glow sticks and flashlights.

Make sure your trick-or-treater’s night in the neighborhood will be safe and fun.

Older kids should trick-or-treat in groups. Kids walking around alone are not as safe as those walking in groups.

A parent or trusted neighbor should accompany younger kids.

Review the route for trick-or-treating beforehand and set a time for when kids should be home. Also, have a plan if your child separates accidentally from his or her friends or from you.

Remember that the treats still need scrutiny before anyone eats them.

Remind your children not to eat any treats until they have come home. To help ensure this, feed them a meal or a substantial snack before they go out.

Check all treats at home in a well-lighted place. Be especially wary of anything that is not factory-wrapped or that is no longer sealed.

Bike / Runner Safety

With several recent crashes involving pedestrians, the Cincinnati Police Department would like to urge residents who walk, run and bike to keep their minds on their safety.

When it comes to traffic safety, information can save lives and prevent the hurt and injury caused by accidents. The majority of motorist/pedestrian/cyclist accidents occur in the evening between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m., with greater incidence on weekends.

	1. Be Aware of Yours and Others Visibility

Be aware that there are others on the road that may not be noticeable to you - and conversely, that others may not be able to see you. Take steps to become more visible at night, and encourage others to do the same.

	2. Use Reflective Gear or Lights to Be Seen

If walking, running or biking at night, wear white or light colors, use appropriate lighting on your bike, and always wear highly-reflective gear which provides 360° visibility, including products made from Scotchlite and Reflexive (with visibility up to 1,500 feet). Use caution with reflective products that do not state their reflective distance. LED runners lights are extremely inexpensive and have little weight.

	3. Walk, Run and Bike in Well-Lit Areas

Know which roads and paths are sufficiently lit for safe nighttime walking and cycling, and plan your route accordingly.

	4. Use Extra Caution in Crosswalks

Drivers often have difficulty seeing someone in a crosswalk at night. You should not presume the crosswalk is empty, cyclists should dismount and cross by foot and pedestrians should not believe the driver could see them in the crosswalk within a safe stopping distance, especially if dressed in dark colors. Accidents are most frequent during vehicle right turns.

	5. Share the Road, and Know Your Place on It

Roads, sidewalks, and bike paths exist for a good reason - be sure you are where you belong. A pedestrian or cyclist who darts into the street without regard to safety laws can cause a serious accident.

	6. Be Wary of Common Distractions

Scanning through songs on an iPod, texting a friend, and even talking on a cell phone can reduce your ability to react to threatening traffic situations. Save the high-tech for full stops.

	7. Know and Follow Traffic Laws

Whether traveling by car, by bike, or on foot, know the rules of the road - particularly right-of-way laws. Cyclists should use appropriate signals and lanes, and pedestrians should only cross at official crosswalks.

	8. Scan the Road in Front of You for Vehicles and Pedestrians

Remain vigilant at night by visually scanning your surroundings. Pedestrians should stop at the curb to view the road, and cyclists should look over their shoulder to see if the road is clear when turning. It is important for motorists to check their blind spot when backing up or changing lanes.

	9. Use Available Safety Gear

Take advantage of all of the safety gear available to you. Seatbelts, good breaks, and working windshield wipers are crucial for motorists. (It's hard to see someone at night through a smear.) If on a bike or motorcycle, wear a helmet. Doing so is 88% effective in preventing serious brain injury.

When accidents occur, the lives of both the person behind the wheel and the person hit are changed forever.

Friends and family members also share the pain. Most of this suffering is preventable, and the first step is awareness. Once you become aware of safety issues, you will start to see how you can be part of the solution.

The next step is to speak up about it - to your friends, family, and lawmakers who can make positive changes in your community and beyond.

	Be safe. Be seen.

Crime Prevention Tips For Children

The Cincinnati Police Department wants to pass on some timely Crime Prevention Tips For Children

Each year in Cincinnati thousands of our children are victimized by crime. It doesn’t matter your child’s age, sex or race or where they live and go to school, they too can become a victim of crime.

Impress upon your children that wherever they are, always remember to Be Alert! Always Be Aware of what is happening around them. The following tips can make a difference in your children eluding becoming victims to crime. As a parent it is important you review these suggestions in an effort to reduce the chances of you child becoming a victim.

Safety In the City of Cincinnati

	While you're walking remember:

	· Have your mom or dad, or both of them, walk your school route with you to make sure it is safe.

	· When your mom or dad cannot walk you, walk with a friend. Two heads are better than one, especially if there is an emergency. Strangers usually pick on one person.

	· Always stick to the same route when going and coming from school.

	· Don't take shortcuts.

	· Be observant as you walk. Be aware of your surroundings. If you think you are being followed, you can cross the street.

	· If you think you are in danger, yell "help" and run to the nearest store or back to school.

	· If a stranger in a car asks you questions, don't get close to the car (you could get pulled in) and never get in it.

	· Remember; a stranger is anyone you and your parents don't know or know well.

	· Some adults can tell you what to do, such as a teacher or a police officer. But no adult can tell you what to do just because he or she is older than you. If you are ever in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable in any way, you have the right to say NO, loud and clear.

	· Don't tell anyone your name and address when you are out walking, and don't think that because someone knows your name that they know you, maybe he/she heard someone else call you by name.

	· Establish a code or secret word that only you and your parents know.

Warning: Wearing clothing with your name anywhere on the outside tells strangers who you are.

GUIDE TO GUN SAFETY

The Cincinnati Police Department in cooperation with the Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program urges all gun owners to keep others safe by following these guidelines.

Gun owners may stop by any Cincinnati Police District and obtain a gunlock from the Neighborhood Liaison Unit.

	PARENTS' GUIDE TO GUN SAFETY

	The Parents' Responsibility
In a home where guns are kept, the degree of safety a child has rests squarely on the child's parents.
Parents who accept the responsibility to learn, practice and teach gun safety rules will ensure their child's safety to a much greater extent than those who do not. Parental responsibility does not end, however, when the child leaves the home.

According to federal statistics, there are guns in approximately half of all U.S. households. Even if no one in your family owns a gun, chances are that someone you know does. Your child could come in contact with a gun at a neighbor's house, when playing with friends, or under other circumstances outside your home.
It is critical for your child to know what to do if he or she encounters a firearm anywhere, and it is the parents' responsibility to provide that training.

Talking With Your Child About Gun Safety

There is no particular age to talk with your child about gun safety. A good time to introduce the subject is the first time he or she shows an interest in firearms, even toy pistols or rifles. Talking openly and honestly about gun safety with your child is usually more effective than just ordering him or her to "Stay out of the gun closet," and leaving it at that. Such statements may just stimulate a child's natural curiosity to investigate further.
As with any safety lesson, explaining the rules and answering a child's questions help remove the mystery surrounding guns. Any rules set for your own child should also apply to friends who visit the home. This will help keep your child from being pressured into showing a gun to a friend.

	Toy Guns vs. Real Guns

It is also advisable, particularly with very young children, to discuss gun use on television as opposed to gun use in real life. Firearms are often handled carelessly in movies and on TV. Additionally, children see TV and movie characters shot and "killed" with well-documented frequency. When a young child sees that same actor appear in another movie or TV show, confusion between entertainment and real life may result. It may be a mistake to assume that your child knows the difference between being "killed" on TV and in reality.

If your child has toy guns, you may want to use them to demonstrate safe gun handling and to explain how they differ from genuine firearms. Even though an unsupervised child should not have access to a gun, there should be no chance that he or she could mistake a real gun for a toy.

What Should You Teach Your Child About Gun Safety?

If you have decided that your child is not ready to be trained in a gun's handling and use, teach him or her to follow the instructions of NRA's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program. If you find a gun:

		STOP!

		Don't Touch.

		Leave the Area.

		Tell an Adult.

The initial steps of "Stop" and "Don't Touch" are the most important. To counter the natural impulse to touch a gun, it is imperative that you impress these steps of the safety message upon your child.

In today's society, where adult supervision is not always possible, the direction to "Leave the Area" is also essential. Under some circumstances, area may be understood to be a room if your child cannot physically leave the apartment or house.

"Tell an Adult" emphasizes that children should seek a trustworthy adult, neighbor, relative or teacher -- if a parent or guardian is not available.

The NRA's Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program includes an instructor guide, activity books, poster, and an animated video to explain its four-step safety message. For more information about the program, visit www.nrahq.org/safety/eddie or call (800) 231-0752.

Basic Gun Safety Rules

Although the NRA has complete gun safety rules available for specific types of firearm use (hunting and competition, for example), the following three rules are fundamental in any situation. Whether or not you own a gun, it is important to know these rules so that you may insist that others follow them.

	• Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Whether you are shooting or simply handling a gun, never point it at yourself or others.
Common sense will tell you which direction is the safest. Outdoors, it is generally safe to point the gun toward the ground, or, if you are at a shooting range, toward the target. Indoors, be mindful of the fact that a bullet can penetrate ceilings, floors, walls, windows, and doors.
• Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. When holding a gun, rest your trigger finger outside the trigger guard alongside the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.
• Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. If you do not know how to check to see if a gun is unloaded, leave it alone. Carefully secure it, being certain to point it safely and to keep your finger off the trigger, and seek competent assistance

Gun Owners' Responsibilities

Most states impose some form of legal duty on adults to take reasonable steps to deny access by children to dangerous substances or instruments. It is the individual gun owner's responsibility to understand and follow all laws regarding gun purchase, ownership, storage, transport, etc. Contact your state police and/or local police for information regarding such laws. If you own a gun and do not know how to operate it, do not experiment with it. Point it in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, and store it securely. Seek competent assistance and instruction at once. An untrained adult can be as dangerous as a curious child.

Store guns so that they are inaccessible to children and other unauthorized users. Gun shops sell a wide variety of safes, cases, and other security devices. While specific security measures may vary, a parent must, in every case, assess the exposure of the firearm and absolutely ensure that it is inaccessible to a child.

This message is not intended as a complete course in gun safety and is not a substitute for formal, qualified instruction in the handling, use, or storage of firearms. The guidelines herein should be considered options to minimize the chance of an accident occurring in the home.

Gun owners may stop by any Cincinnati Police District and obtain a gun lock from the Neighborhood Liaison Unit.

Deceptive door-to-door magazine sales crews

The Cincinnati Police Department would like to warn residents of deceptive door-to-door magazine sales crews are in the City of Cincinnati looking to earn a quick buck this summer.

Crews have been on the east side of town going door-to-door soliciting funds under the guise that proceeds would go to local charities. A check with two of these charities reveals they have no working relationship with out-of-town magazine groups.

The typical sales representative approachs residents and explain they are from New Orleans or some other region recently hit by a natural disaster. The sales person then goes on to push you to buy magazines by cash or check and issue you a handwritten receipt.

Salespeople are typically transported to neighborhoods in vans and work in teams to canvas the neighborhood during afternoon and dinner hours. Once they make their sales, checks are cashed and they leave town.

Information from the Better Business Bureau indicates:

In the last 12 months alone, BBB has received 1,100 complaints from consumers in 46 states and the District of Columbia against more than 50 companies that are selling magazines door-to-door.

Many of these companies employ crews of high school and college-age people who are trying to earn money over the summer. These crews are sent to communities to knock on doors and sell magazines—sometimes without appropriate licensing. In the sales pitch, the representative might explain they are working to help get their lives back on track, raising money on behalf of a charity or for a school trip or even selling subscriptions to support troops in Iraq.

“Because sales representatives are typically high school or college-age, victims readily believe the potentially fictitious sales pitch and often pay several hundred dollars for the subscriptions by personal check given directly to the sales reps,” said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. “Most complaints against such companies allege that sales reps took their check and the magazines never arrived, however, some complainants also allege being subjected to high-pressure and misleading sales tactics.”

Home Improvement Scams

Home Improvement Scams Increase During Summer Months

This is the season when scam artists drive through neighborhoods looking to find people in their yards. Once spotted, the victim is drawn into a conversation about the work that needs to be done on their home and then offered a "bargain" home repair.

The National Association of Bunco Investigators (NABI) says to beware when a repairperson knocks on your door. Look for these telltale signs:

The repairperson drives an unmarked truck or van with an out-of-state license.

Only rarely will legitimate home improvement companies solicit door-to-door. They usually distribute fliers or make phone calls since it's more cost effective for them.

The worker has no business identification, local address or telephone number. Always request identification so that you can call the company for verification.

You are offered a “special price” if you sign that day. Honest home contractors don’t pressure customers to sign a contract or job order immediately.

Beware of excuses such as "We just finished a job around the corner and had extra materials that we could offer you at a discounted price." Professional companies do not operate in that manner.

The worker asks for upfront costs or fees, or accepts only cash. Reputable contractors do not ask for all the money upfront. A customer pays one third of the bill first, then another third midway through the job, and the rest when the work is completed. Never pay in cash. Using a check keeps a record of the transaction and often provides identification of the person cashing the check.

No written estimates or contracts are offered. If you have no contract, you have no recourse if the job is faulty or is never completed.

The worker has no references. Ask for references and check around the neighborhood to see if anyone has contracted with this person to do work on their home.

Scam artists also like to intimidate their prey. After a job is finished, usually with inferior materials and shoddy work, the man or woman will inform the customer that more money is owed. When the customer objects, he or she is told that the materials used were stolen and the police will be brought in if the higher price isn’t paid.

Compare estimates with other licensed contractors when you decide to have work done on your home. Don’t give it to some “fly by night” contractor.

If you would like to read more on the subject, you can log onto http://nabihq.org/en-us/cons_and_scams/ “Cons and Scams” to see how BUNCO artists operate.

If you suspect that the person at your door is a scam artist, contact the Cincinnati Police Department at 911 or 765-1212.

Deception Burglaries

Deception Burglaries Blossom In The Early Summer

The Cincinnati Police Department is taking a proactive approach in alerting its citizens to certain crime trends that have occurred throughout the City in recent years. Unfortunately, this is the time when these types of crimes are known to occur.

Suspects, posing as legitimate workers, approach elderly homeowners at their residence with the intent of gaining entry under a seemingly legitimate role: local gas company, water department, cable company, tree trimmers, pavers, County inspectors, or government officials. One suspect will distract the homeowner while a second suspect will enter the home and search inside for valuables and cash.

Another type of ruse used to gain entry into the home is for a suspect to knock on the door and ask for a pen and piece of paper to leave the victim's neighbor a note. The suspect may appear to have difficulty writing the note, and will ask to come inside the house. Once inside the victim's house, the suspect will ask the victim to help write the note. As the suspect keeps the victim occupied, others enter the residence to remove money and valuables.

A variety of vehicles have been associated with these subjects including pickup trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles. In some cases criminals place magnetic “Water Works” signs on the sides of these vehicles.

Be particularly alert to anyone in your neighborhood looking to perform home repairs, or asking to gain entry into your home. Be sure to ask to see identification and let them know you are going to call and get authorization from their company before allowing them access. If they are legitimate, they won't mind the wait.

BIKE SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

CINCINNATI – BIKE SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

Bike Safety Should Be Reviewed With Your Children Often

A new bicycle remains a traditional favorite gift for kids for birthdays, Christmas, or other special events. But once the immediate excitement of receiving the bike is past, the responsibility of having a bicycle and the safety rules that apply should be taught to a child as a condition of riding it.

Whether it is pedaling their way to school or just to a friend's house down the street, parents need to take an active role with bike safety to ensure the trip doesn't result in harmful--even tragic--results. The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control indicates that each year more than a half-million people nationwide are treated in emergency rooms, and more than 700 people die, as a result of bicycle related injuries. Children are at a particularly high risk, in part because the population age is the one often riding bikes, and children 15 years and younger account for almost 60 percent of all bicycle-related accidents.

Whether your kid is pedaling alone, with friends, or with an adult, these bike safety guidelines should always be followed for a safe ride:

Always wear a bike safety helmet. Make sure it fits snugly and does not obstruct vision.

Make certain the bike is well-maintained and in good riding condition. Parents should regularly check a bike to ensure the tires are aired up appropriately, the seat is on solid and straight, handlebars are in the correct position, and the chain is in proper condition. Remember that kids often routinely lay down their bikes or tumble, and those actions can cause damage to the bicycle.

If a new rider is still using training wheels, be sure the wheels are mounted correctly and that the training wheels still have appropriate wear. Many bikes for toddlers and youngsters are made inexpensively, especially the training wheels, because the belief is that they will not be utilized for a long period. Many a young kid has taken a terrible tumble for a bike in which a training wheel literally falls off, often delaying the child's interest or desire to ride a bike out of fear the training wheel could come off again.

Make sure the kid's bicycle is the proper size and, if adjustable, is at the right height for the rider right now. Parents sometimes make the mistake of "buying up" a bike in size with the premise their kid will grow into it soon enough. While the logic sounds reasonable, riding it will create bike safety concerns until the kid can properly sit and balance on the seat and touch the ground.

Kids should wear bright colors--fluorescent if possible--and avoid riding bikes in the evening or at sundown. If a kid must be out after dark, the bicycle should have a headlight visible for 500 feet as well as rear reflectors. Bicyclists should always wear appropriate shoes. Many bike safety accidents occur because young riders are wearing sandals, flip flops or even riding with bare feet.

Know your kid's route and time it takes to ride it, and require that they do not deviate from the established path or timeline. If your kid rides a bike to school or home, practice the route before the start of school and know where any crossing guards or help might be. If a younger child is riding a bike to a neighbor’s home and you are not monitoring the ride personally, require a phone call once the child arrives.

Drill your child of appropriate bike safety rules. If possible, have your child attend a bike safety class. The often-called bike rodeos provide an excellent training opportunity for kids.

Be sure your kid rides with traffic, is aware of motorists, and obeys all traffic laws. Be sure your kid knows not to stop and talk with anyone they do not know personally for their own personal safety.

Prohibit riding double or stunt riding. These actions create the opportunity for accidents waiting to happen.

Have your youngster understand that bike safety rules are just that and not an option. It is recommended that parents discuss privileges and consequences to riding without a helmet, riding with inappropriate clothing or footwear, or not following general safety regulations.

Ride with your child! Parents can always use the extra exercise, and a bicycle ride creates an opportunity for parent-child involvement and good quality conversation time.

Have a bike safety contingency plan...just in case! Does your child know a certain neighbor whose home can be considered a "safe house" in the event of a bike issue? Could your youngster carry a walkie-talkie or, if an older kid, even a cell phone on an emergency basis only? Parents should provide their kids with "what if" scenarios they can think through...just in case the unthinkable happens. When it comes to bike safety and your kid's well-being, there is no such thing as being over-prepared.

US52 / Kellogg Avenue - CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING

US52 / Kellogg Avenue is closed from the City Limits at Sutton Avenue westward to just before Delta Avenue, due to flood waters. This closure also involves drivers traveling west on Salem Avenue from Sutton.

Drivers utilizing this route should be aware of this closure and plan alternate routes.

Closures will remain until after flood waters recede and the road surface is cleared and approved for travel by the City.

IT IS IMPORTANT that no one should enter or drive in flood water. The speed of the moving flood water is not the only danger. It is impossible to know with certainty what is in or under the surface of flood water. Any number of hidden risks from debris to chemical or sewage pollution may be present.

Even after a flood has subsided, the danger to drivers and people in automobiles is not gone. Wet roads and roads covered with silt or strewn with debris can be very dangerous.

NEVER drive through flooded roadways. STOP! Turn Around Don’t Drown.

The roadbed may be washed out.

You can lose control of your vehicle in only a few inches of water.

Your car may float. Vehicles can be swept away by less than 2 feet of water.

Do not drive around a barricade. Turn around and go another way!

Sightseers should remain out of the areas along the Ohio River. The presence of sightseers not only puts them at risk, but may also hamper rescue efforts in the event of an emergency.

Make Holiday Shopping Go Smoothly

You Need A Personal Safety Plan for Black Friday

Important Safety Tips From The Cincinnati Police and NCPC Make Holiday Shopping Go Smoothly

This year many shoppers will be out early to find those big bargains on Black Friday or online for Cyber Monday, but the criminals will be out too. The Cincinnati Police Department and National Crime Prevention Council have 10 tips to help you shop safely while getting those great holiday bargains throughout the shopping season.

Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car.

Shop online with companies you know and trust. Check a company’s background if you are not familiar with it. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in.

Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as onetime or multiuse disposable credit cards or money orders, at online stores and auction sites.

Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information.

Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket.

Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.

Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home.

Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit.

If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you get separated. Select a central meeting place and make sure they know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help.

National Night Out provides the Police Department a unique opportunity to reach out and make contact with residents from throughout the City of Cincinnati in a manner not normally available. This year National Night Out will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at six locations throughout the city.

Locations of this year’s events:

.

Each site offers a unique opportunity for residents and officers to interact and eliminate many of the stereotypes associated with policing in the City of Cincinnati.

Latchkey Kids

"Latchkey kid" is a term that's often used to describe a child who routinely spends some part of his/her day alone in the home, taking care of themselves while their parent(s) are typically at work. Experts estimate that from 5 to 12 million children between the ages of 5 and 13 years old are latchkey kids. In the majority of cases, the parent(s) either cannot afford or locate available child care. Unfortunately, statistics also show that these children are three times more likely to be involved in accidents, engage in delinquent behavior, or be victimized than those supervised by adults.

If this describes your child's situation, The Cincinnati Police Department encourages you to regularly cover some important safety issues and prevention tips that will help to build confidence and self esteem while promoting greater self care skills.

Communication is crucial. Focus on setting rules and limits, increasing levels of responsibility, and communicating basic safety information. If children understand why they must be left alone and what they may and may not do, their risk of injury and victimization greatly decrease.

Discuss the routines they are to follow–household chores, pets to tend, homework, family policies on visiting friends or having friends visit them, and what to do when the phone or doorbell rings. If you won't be home at your regular time, let your children know.

Teach your child to:

memorize their name and address, including city and state.

memorize their phone number, including area code.

use both push-button and rotary dial phones to make emergency, local, and long distance calls, and how to reach the operator.

check in with you or a neighbor immediately after arriving home.

never enter your home if a door is ajar or a window is broken.

operate your home's door and window locks, and to always lock them when they are at home alone.

to answer the doorbell and phone when they're home alone.

never go into anyone else's home without your permission.

avoid walking or playing alone.

run to the nearest public place, neighbor, or "Safe House" if they are being followed, either on foot or by a car

That a stranger is someone neither you nor they know well.

tell you if anyone asks them to keep a secret, offers them gifts or money, or asks to take their picture.

tell you if anything occurred while they were away from you that made them feel uncomfortable in any way.

Ensuring that your children know and understand the items on this list will help turn their latchkey hours into a positive learning experience that builds a sense of responsibility and confidence.

Guarding Against Robbery and Assault

The Cincinnati Police Department wants to ensure that our citizens are educated and aware when it comes to crime prevention and personal safety.

Whether you live inside Cincinnati limits or in the surrounding suburbs, you should be aware that serious crime can occur in any city, in any neighborhood, to any victim. For that reason, your Cincinnati officers want you to know what you should do if you become the victim of a robbery or assault. While money is often the motivation, these incidents are considered crimes of violence because they involve the threat or actual use of physical violence. The basic rules of prevention are to be sensible and to be alert. The following tips will also help reduce the risk of robbery or assault.

Personal Safety Tips on the Street

If possible, don't walk alone during late-night hours. Walk in groups whenever you can—there is always safety in numbers.

Let a family member or friend know your destination and your estimated time of arrival or return. That way, the police can be notified as quickly as possible if there is a problem.

Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible. Avoid alleys, vacant lots, wooded areas, and other short-cuts or secluded areas. They are usually not well-lit or heavily traveled.

Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. Walk close to the curb, avoiding doorways, bushes, and other potential hiding places.

If you have to walk in the street, walk facing traffic. A person walking with traffic can be followed, forced into a car, and abducted more easily than a person walking against traffic.

Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace. Don't stop to talk to strangers.

Wear clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement. And don't burden yourself with too many packages or items.

Always be aware of your surroundings. If you are wearing headphones, don't turn up the volume so high that you cannot hear outside noises.

Never hitchhike or accept rides from strangers.

Report any suspicious activity or person immediately to the Cincinnati Police Department at 513-765-1212 or, if it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

Avoid carrying large sums of cash, or displaying expensive jewelry in public.

Basic Street Smarts

Wherever you are—on the street, in an office building or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or subway—stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.

Send the message that you're calm, confident, and know where you're going.

Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.

Know the neighborhoods where you live and work.

Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals, and restaurants, or stores that are open late.

If Someone Tries to Rob You

Don't resist. Give up your property—don't give up your life.

Report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent others from becoming victims.

Self defense measures are most effective when applied as preventive steps—avoiding the crime in the first place.

These measures include running away, hiding, screaming, and raising an alarm—remember, more people will respond to someone yelling "Fire" than they will to "Help!"”

Safety in Your Vehicle

The crime of “carjacking” – which is stealing a car by force – captures headlines across the country. Statistically speaking, however, your chances of being a victim of carjacking are very slim, and taking preventive measures can reduce that risk even more.

If the carjacker threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your car. Don’t argue. Your life is definitely worth more than a car.

Get away from the area as quickly as possible.

Try to remember what the carjacker looked like—sex, race, age, hair and eye color, special features, clothes.

Report the crime immediately to the police.

Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Safety Tips

Try to use machines you are familiar with, and try to use terminals located in banks rather than independent terminals.

Be aware of your surroundings. Look around before conducting a transaction. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and go to another ATM.

If you must use an ATM after hours, make sure it’s well-lit.

Never walk away from an ATM with cash still in hand. If you are going to count your money, do so at the ATM.

When making an ATM transaction from your car, be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes and ears open, and keep car doors locked.

Preventing Assaults

Assaults are basically fights carried out with or without a weapon at home or in a public space, between strangers, (frequently) among friends, acquaintances, or loved ones.

The most serious assaults are known as "aggravated assaults," "assaults with a deadly weapon," or "assaults with intent to kill."

Less serious offenses are called "simple assaults." In many cases, simple assaults turn into more serious assaults or even homicides, if the initial argument or fight is not scaled back or resolved quickly.

While some assaults are unavoidable, use the following tips to make sure simple arguments do not turn violent or deadly:

If you are involved in a heated argument that appears to be turning violent, walk away. If you stay and fight "to prove something," you will only demonstrate poor judgment in almost every instance.

Never carry a firearm, knife, or other illegal weapon. A weapon will definitely escalate the situation, and it could ultimately be used to harm innocent people or yourself.

Avoid excessive drinking, or if you have been drinking, recognize its impact on your judgment. Alcohol is a contributing factor in many assaults.

If you see an assault in progress, dial 9-1-1 immediately to alert the police. Do not jump into the fray, unless it is a last resort to prevent more serious injury.

Theft from Auto Awareness

Over the past year, the Cincinnati Police Department has sponsored a "Theft from Auto Awareness" campaign. The tips below will provide useful tips that will ensure your car and the items inside stay safe and secure:

BE AWARE OF CRIMINALS’ METHODS AND LOCATIONS:

Entry Methods:

• Break glass

• Left unlocked

• Pried/jimmied

• Windows rolled down or half-rolled down

• Window vents

• Sliding windows (mainly trucks)

• Sunroofs

• Convertibles

Most Common Points of Entry:

• Side and rear window

• Side door

High Risk Areas:

• Apartments

• Single family residences

• Auto Parts/Dealers/Repair Shops

• Shopping Centers

• Restaurants

• Parks

• Bars

Suspicious Actions:

• Pulling door handles

• Looking in windows

• Odd clothing for the time of year (long coats or gloves worn in Summer)

• Lookouts

• Nervous looking

• Checking for alarms by bumping or hitting the window or bumpers for sensitivity

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO DETER THIEVES FROM TARGETING YOUR CAR:

• Take your keys out of your vehicle

• Lock your car

• Park in well-lit areas

• Park in attended lots

• Leave only the ignition/door key with the lot attendant

• Completely close car windows when parking

• Do not leave valuables in plain view (place items in your trunk if they must be left in the car)

• Use your garage

• Lock your garage door and the vehicle inside

• Engrave expensive accessories

• Use tire/wheel locks

• Install an audible alarm

• Take out removable radios and face plates

• Avoid parking between large vehicles (they provide cover)

• Do not approach your vehicle when a stranger is near it; call 911 or security for an escort

ITEMS TO AVOID LEAVING IN PLAIN VIEW:

• Cell Phones

• GPS Navigation Systems

• Charger Cords

• Antennas

• Pagers

• iPods

• Cigarettes

• Weapons

• Briefcases

• Purses

• Wallets

• Radar Detectors

• Laptop Computers

• Removable Radios

• Clothing

• Money (loose change)

• Cassette Tapes

• Address Books

• Credit Cards

Crime Prevention Tip - Property Thief

The Property Thief

For the property thief, the decision to commit a crime on an apartment property is a risk versus reward exercise. The risk of committing this crime is the chance of getting caught, losing the property, and possibly their freedom. The reward is the perceived benefit obtained upon successful completion of the crime. A good apartment security plan will address this concept by using crime prevention measures that will increase the perpetrator’s perception of being caught (risk), while diminishing their perceived value of their target (reward).

Property criminals view an apartment community differently than a new resident prospect looking for a place to live. For property thieves, it’s more like going shopping and looking at the various items available to steal. They have a choice where and when they will commit a crime. If the thieves don’t like the merchandise or the shopping experience at your property, they will go elsewhere. For them, the available targets equate to money. The things they steal can be converted to money or can be used so they don’t have to spend their money. Property crimes are usually one of stealth, where the criminal does not want a confrontation or be identified. However, it is possible that the property criminal may become violent if the opportunity presents itself or if surprised, cornered, or captured.

Those arrested for property crimes and usually male and between 18-21 years old. The studies show that most property criminals live nearby their target areas and are familiar with the neighborhood. It is an important comfort factor for them to know the terrain and all the potential escape routes. They will usually work the property on foot, unless they need a vehicle to transport the stolen merchandise. Sometimes the property criminal will have lived in the target apartment community or have a friend who is a current resident.

Criminal Deterrence

For apartment managers, recognizing and addressing the lower levels of criminal motivation is the first key to successful deterrence. A good crime prevention program works best on moderately and poorly motivated criminals.

There are some key points to remember:

A criminal’s motivation to commit a theft is at it’s lowest level during the first visit to the property
Criminal motivation increases with familiarity of the property
Success, in committing crimes on a property, will increase the level of motivation to continue to commit more crimes
It is three times more difficult to deter a criminal who has been successfully committing crimes on your property
The best places to address lower levels of criminal motivation is at the entrances to the property, the perimeter of the buildings, and most importantly, in the leasing office. The property thief will view the lack of suitable escape routes as a trap and will simply choose another property to victimize. Good perimeter fencing and a reduced number of entrances after hours will often create that perception. Believe it or not, thieves do notice the active efforts of patrolling volunteers (such as Cincinnati's Citizens on Patrol Program members), and they do read those Neighborhood Watch signs that we so often overlook. Property thieves want to blend into a community, and they get uncomfortable when residents look suspiciously at them.

If you are interested in joining the Citizens on Patrol Program or forming a neighborhood watch in your area, please contact the Community Oriented Policing Programs Coordinator at 352-1472.
SPOT A CON

USE COMMON SENSE TO SPOT A CON

It’s not always easy to spot con artists. They’re smart, extremely persuasive, and aggressive. They invade your home through the telephone, computer, and the mail; advertise in well-known newspapers and magazines; and come to your door. They’re well mannered, friendly, and helpful—at first.

Most people think they’re too smart to fall for a scam. But con artists rob all kinds of people—from investment counselors and doctors to teenagers and senior citizens—of billions of dollars every year. Cons, scams, and frauds disproportionately victimize seniors with false promises of miracle cures, financial security, and luxury prizes. One easy rule to remember: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Some Typical Cons Targeted at Older People
Many cons choose to victimize older people. Con artists devise complex offers that confuse their targets and eventually persuade them to take up these offers. Don’t let this happen to you:
◗ The phone rings and the caller tells you that you’ve won a new car. In order to claim the prize you need to mail a check to cover the taxes and delivery of the car. Weeks later, the phone rings again. You learn that the original prize company has gone out of business. But the caller tells you not to worry because his/her company has purchased the assets of the defunct company. All you need to do now is send another check to the new company to cover the costs of the legal transactions and for immediate delivery of the car. The check gets mailed, but the prize never arrives.
◗ A mail offer, newspaper, magazine, or television ad catches your eye. It promises a quick cure for cancer, arthritis, memory loss, back pain, or other ailments. “It’s an absolute miracle,” one testimony reads. “I feel a million times better.” You mail your check for a six-week supply of this miracle cure and wind up with a jar of Vitamin C, placebos, or even worse, pills or tonics that have not been medically tested and could worsen your condition or react negatively with the prescription medication you regularly take. You Can Protect Yourself
◗ Never give a caller your credit card, phone card, Social Security number, or bank account number over the phone. It’s illegal for telemarketers to ask for these numbers to verify a prize or gift.
◗ Beware of 900 numbers. Remember, if you call a 900 number to claim a “prize,” you end up paying for the call. Make sure you understand all charges before making the call.
◗ Take your time and shop around. Don’t let an aggressive con artist pressure you into making a decision. Demand information in writing by mail. Get a second opinion. Ask your family, friends, and neighbors what they think about certain offers.
◗ Stay informed about current scams in your area. Contact your attorney general’s office, district attorney’s office, the Better Business Bureau, or local consumer affairs office for more information.
◗ Remember, you have the right, the ability, and the power to say no! If the caller on the other end of the phone makes you wary, be assertive and end the conversation. Cons know that the longer they keep you on the phone, the higher their chance of success. They often prey on the trusting, polite nature of many people or on their excitement over getting a supposed prize or bargain. By saying no and hanging up the phone, you can prevent a crime from taking place.

Be a Wise Consumer
◗ Don’t buy health products or treatments that include a promise for a quick and dramatic cure, testimonials, imprecise and non-medical language, appeals to emotion instead of reason, or a single product that cures many ills.
◗ Look closely at offers that come in the mail. Con artists often use official-looking forms and language and bold graphics to lure victims. If you receive items in the mail that you didn’t order, you are under no obligation to pay for them. You are free to throw them out, return them, or keep them.
◗ Beware of cheap home repair work that would otherwise be expensive. The con artist may do only part of the work, use shoddy materials and untrained workers, or simply take your deposit and never return. Never pay with cash. Never accept offers from drive-up workers who “just happen” to be in the neighborhood. If they’re reliable, they’ll come back after you check them out.

If Someone Rips You Off
◗ Report con games to the police, your city or state consumer protection office, district attorney’s office, or a consumer advocacy group. Don’t be embarrassed. Some very, very astute people have been taken in by these pros!
Craigslist and eBay Scams

The overwhelming majority of craigslist and eBay users are trustworthy and well-intentioned.

With billions of interactions facilitated through these sites, the incidence of violent crime has been extremely low.

Nevertheless, it's very important to take the same common sense precautions online as you would offline.

When meeting someone for the first time, please remember to:

Never meet at your home.

Always select a busy public place with video surveillance of the parking area. A great alternative is the parking lot of your local police department.

Do not meet in a secluded place, or invite strangers into your home

Be especially careful when buying/selling high value items

Tell a friend or family member where you're going

Take your cell phone along if you have one

Trust your instincts

Do not allow the buyer to test drive your vehicle into unfamiliar neighborhoods or industrial areas. They might be driving you into a trap.

Be suspicious of a buyer talking softly over the cell phone or looking around the area a lot.

Always ask to hold onto their driver's license while driving.

Carjacking can occur during a test drive. Should this happen to you, let them take the vehicle. Do not resist unless your life is in danger.

Crime Prevention Tip

PREVENT DOG BITES

Unfortunately, even our favorite pets can sometimes bite. Here are some important safety tips to help prevent dog bites:

• Never approach a dog that you don't know.

• Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog— never run or scream.

• Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies.

• If a dog leaps at you, cover your head and neck. It is very important that you try to keep the dog away from your head and neck.

• If knocked down by a dog, lie still and remain in a ball. Do not play aggressive games with your dog; for example, wrestling.

• Never try to separate fighting dogs.

• Always ask the dog’s owner and your parent before getting close to, petting or playing with a dog

Internet Safety - Keep Your Kids Safe Online!

Internet Safety - Keep Your Kids Safe Online!

The Cincinnati Police Department suggests all parents take these precautions.

Almost all children today have access to the Internet through schools, libraries, community centers, or their home. And most 8 to 18-year-olds, 74 percent, have Internet access from their home computers according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Not only do more children have access to the Internet than ever before, but they are using it more, too. Many schools incorporate the Internet into their curricula and encourage online research for projects. But that’s not all kids are doing online. They also email, chat with friends through instant messenger and in chat rooms, play games, create websites and web blogs, and just surf the ‘net.

Even as kids grow savvier in their use of the Internet, it can still be a dangerous place. The good news is that most dangers can be avoided if children and their parents learn about smart Internet use.

Tips

· To guard against identity theft, never give out your Social Security number. Treat it as confidential information.

· Commit all passwords to memory. Never write them down or carry them with you.

· When using an ATM machine, make sure no one is hovering over you and can see you enter your password.

· When participating in an online auction, try to pay the seller directly with a credit card so you can dispute the charges if the merchandise does not arrive or was misrepresented. If possible, avoid paying by check or money order.

· Adopt an attitude of healthy skepticism toward websites that offer prizes or giveaways. Chances are, all that’s been “won” is the opportunity to buy something you didn’t want in the first place.

· Choose a commercial online service that offers parental control features.

· Tell your children never to give out their address telephone number password school name or any other personal information.

· Make sure your children know to never agree to meet face-to-face with someone they’ve met online without discussing it with you. Only if you decide that it’s okay to meet their “cyber-friend” should they arrange to meet this person, and then the meeting should be in a familiar public place in the presence of a trusted adult.

· Tell your children never to respond to messages that have bad words, are scary, or just seem weird.

· Tell your children never to enter an area that charges for services without asking you first.

· Tell children never send a picture of themselves to anyone without your permission.

· Make sure that access to the Internet at your children’s school is monitored by adults.

Snow Emergency Declared in Cincinnati

2/6/2010

For Immediate Release

CITY DECLARES SNOW EMERGENCY IN CINCINNATI

City Manager Milton Dohoney, Jr. has declared a snow emergency in Cincinnati. So that snow removal equipment can effectively clear streets, all parked vehicles must be removed from marked “Snow Emergency Routes” immediately.

The public’s cooperation is requested to maintain safe traffic flow in our city during this snow emergency. Any parked vehicles that owners do not move from snow emergency routes will be towed by wrecker trucks working with the city’s snow emergency vehicle removal detail. Police officers working with the emergency vehicle removal detail will first attempt to locate owners and advise them to move their vehicles. If the owner cannot be located or does not move the vehicle, the wrecker will take the vehicle to a nearby non-critical area, if possible, or to the Impound Lot. Each Police District will maintain a list of vehicles that have been moved and where they have been taken. The requirement to keep marked snow emergency routes clear of parked vehicles will continue until the snow emergency is canceled.

Robbery Prevention

ROBBERY

PREVENTION

The City of Cincinnati is asking all businesses to take precautions so they are not victims of armed robberies. By following these simple tips, you can reduce chance of your business being robbed.

Keep your front doors and windows clear of signs and posters to allow good, two way visibility. Employees can see suspicious persons outside. Passers-by and police can see inside.

Use video camera surveillance and make it well known.

Keep the outside of your business well lit at night.

Be alert for "customers" who seem to be loitering or glancing around the store while appearing to shop or browse through a magazine.

Watch for suspicious persons outside the business - especially in parked cars.

If you see someone who is acting suspiciously inside or outside, call the police to have them checked out.

Make sure your cash register area is clearly visible to outside observers.

Practice good cash control. Keep a minimum amount in your cash drawer and make regular drops into a safe – No more than $100.00 should be kept in the register.

Advertise that you keep a minimal amount of cash in the register and that you will not accept large bills.

Don't keep large bills under the cash drawer. If you don't have a safe, find a less obvious place to hide your extra cash until you go to the bank.

Use a safe that the clerk cannot open alone or that requires two keys. Post that fact conspicuously, including on the safe itself.

Always have at least two clerks working at night.

Vary your banking routine. Carry cash in a variety of ways - a lunch sack, attaché case, flight bag, pocket, etc. Money bags are pretty obvious.

Make deposits as often as possible, never less than once a day.

Keep side and back doors locked. Have employees only use the main entrance.

Place markers at the main entrance that employees can use to help gauge the height of a robber as he leaves.

CINCINNATI POLICE EMERGENCY – 911

NON-EMERGENCY DISPATCH – 513- 765-1212
