Career Day- HELICOPTER LANDING

FYI- The Rhode Island National Guard has coordinated a helicopter landing on the soccer field adjacent to Mt. Pleasant High School on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. A safety survey of the landing zone has been completed by the National Guard. This event has been coordinated by Mount Pleasant High School for their Career Day. The helicopter will be there from 9:00 am- 1:00 pm for students to observe and ask questions.

He handed a teller a note demanding the money in her drawer and she complied. He fled the bank traveling across the parking lot to Pitman Street. On Sunday, June 8, 2008, at approximately 9:36pm the pictured male, already known to police, age 49 and a resident of Oakland Avenue left the PC Mart located at Eaton Street and Douglas Avenue after making a purchase and starting walking back to his home. At approximately 9:48pm he was found on the sidewalk in front of 201 Oakland Avenue with serious head injuries and was transported to RI Hospital. Detectives have since been unable to interview him.

Be on lookout of suspicious truck

FYI-On 05-14-2008 police responded to 50 Obediah Brown Road at the Pleasant View School for a report of a woman Annoyed. Upon arrival police met with the victim and her mother, who stated to police that around 07:50 hrs the victim was waiting for the bus at the corner of Plainfield Street and Daniel Ave when a small green dump truck with metal tool boxes on the sides pulled up to the intersection and motioned for the victim to come over to the truck as the bus pulled up. The victim stated that she then stepped on the bus and the truck drove down Daniel Ave towards Pocasset ave. The victim stated that there were 3 white male subjects in the vehicle and they stopped on Jewell Street before they came to the bus stop and picked up a subject on Jewell Street 2 houses in from Plainfield Street. The victim stated that the subject never spoke to her at all, and believes that he wanted to talk to her. Police went to the house on Jewell Street and spoke to residents about the truck. The residents stated that nobody gets picked up by any truck in the morning. The parent of the young victim stated that Tri-Town motors has cameras mounted on his building. Police responded and met with the owner and stated that he does not have any cameras on his building located at Plainfield Street and Daniel Ave. Detectives were notified.

Suspect fled in the passenger’s side of a white vehicle driven by another male. The vehicle was recovered moments later and had been reported from another jurisdiction.

CAUTION: Subject should be considered armed and dangerous. He has prior charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a prohibited weapon. Wanted for bank robbery.

GPS THEFTS

Just a reminder that GPS theft(s) are occurring almost every day in all areas of the city. In some cases they are even stolen from vehicles in lots where there are attendants. Please use caution when leaving your car ANYWHERE!!!

Removing the device that holds the GPS to the window does not prevent theft IF the suction cup ring is left on the window. Solution? Do not use the suction cup at all unless on the road and you are with the GPS. Leaving remnants of the holder is inviting a smashed car window.... even if the GPS is not there.
Bottom line, remove the holder and hide the GPS.

Please be advised that on 3/15/08, at approximately 1:15 A.M., Providence Police Department responded to 122 Camp Street for a report of arson. Upon arrival police found that two incendiary devices had been thrown at the 2nd floor of this residence. A resident of this address is a member of Hillel. This organization is the center for Jewish life at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.

The Providence Police Department in conjunction with the FBI and ATF are conducting a criminal investigation into this serious incident. Brown University and RISD Police are fully aware of this incident and hae assisted with necesary information. The investigation is advancing and we urge anyone with information regarding this disturbing incident to please contact the Providence Police Department.

Graffiti Arrests

On March 1, 2008 at approximately 0348hrs, a City of Providence Parks department employee viewed two subjects spraying graffiti on the walls at 121 South Main Street and The Crawford Street Bridge. The employee called police and Patrolman Stephan Rasch and Patrolman Luis Palaez apprehended two subjects nearby. The subjects were identified as Michael Todorovich and Nicholas Bach. Both of the subjects are local college students and were in possession of spray cans and markers. Police were able to tie this incident with another act of graffiti in Water Place Park.

On March 3, 2008 at approximately 1029hrs RISD security apprehended two subjects who were writing on the stairs of the Dwight House located at 187 Benefit Street. The two subjects are juveniles and were taken to the Youth Service Bureau.

CITY CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS OF COMMUNITY POLICING IN PROVIDENCE

Nationally recognized crime prevention initiative credited with a 30% drop in crime in Providence over the past five years

PROVIDENCE – “We stand here today surrounded by our partners who have worked side-by-side with police to create a safer city,” said Mayor David N. Cicilline as he joined Police Chief Dean M. Esserman, the men and women of the Providence Police Department, community organizations and residents at Lockwood Plaza to celebrate five years of community policing. The successful crime prevention initiative has resulted in a 30% drop in crime in Providence over the past five years and serves as a national model for law enforcement agencies throughout the country.

“We have built a police force based on the principle that its most important asset is not manpower or technology, it is trust,” said Mayor Cicilline. “There’s no question, our reduction in crime is the direct result of the community’s partnership with the hard working men and women of the Police Department.”

“This police department did not do the job alone” said Colonel Dean M. Esserman, “Over these past years we have worked in partnership and today we honor those partners.”

Since the program’s inception, the Police Department has opened nine community police stations throughout Providence staffed by district lieutenants and VISTA volunteers who have become an integral part of the neighborhoods they serve. Community partners provided the space for the neighborhood substations, rent free. They also donated furniture and paid for utilities.

Mayor Cicilline and Chief Esserman marked the five-year anniversary of community policing by recognizing the people and organizations that have made the program a success with Community Partner Awards.

The following organizations were honored with Community Partner Awards: Margaret Holland McDuff, CEO, Family Service of Rhode Island; Teny Gross, Executive Director, Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence; Hillary Salmons, Executive Director, Providence After School Alliance; Barbara Fields, Senior Program Director, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC); Patrick McGuigan, Executive Director, The Providence Plan.

Lieutenants also nominated the following individuals for the award from each of the nine community police districts: District one - Frank LaTorre, Director, Downtown Improvement District (DID); District 2 - George Lindsey, Director, Davey Lopes Recreation Center; District 3 - Cynthia Springer, President, Washington Park Neighborhood Association; District 4 - Kari Lang, Executive Director, West Broadway Neighborhood Association; District 5 - Robinson Alston, Jr., President, Olneyville Housing Corporation; District 6 - Michael Correia, President, Providence Crime Watch; District 7 - Richard Kless, President, Office of Campus Living, Providence College; District 8 - Raymond Watson, Executive Director, Mount Hope Neighborhood Association and District 9 - John Britto, Athletic Director, Fox Point Boys Club.

Following the ceremony, the Mayor joined the police and the City’s community partners for a march from Lockwood Plaza to the Davey Lopes Recreation Center symbolizing the collective efforts of police and residents to reclaim their streets and rid Providence neighborhoods of crime. For several years, Lockwood Plaza was a haven for crime and illegal drug activity, until last year. That’s when the Police Department launched an innovative sting operation that resulted in the arrest of dozens of drug dealers and caused a few criminals to change their ways.

Officials also unveiled statistics over the past five years which indicate that violent crime in Providence dropped from 14,039 in 2002 to 9,821 in 2007. The 30% reduction bucks the national trend in which other cities have experienced increases in violent crime.

Providence’s community police program has attracted the attention of law enforcement officials throughout New England and other parts of the country including Boston; Dallas, Texas; New Haven, Connecticut; Hartford, Connecticut; Brockton, Massachusetts; Fall River, Massachusetts; New Bedford Massachusetts; White Plains, New York.

Jury Duty Scam

The phone rings, you pick it up, and the caller identifies himself as an officer of the court. He says you failed to report for jury duty and that a warrant is out for your arrest. You say you never received a notice. To clear it up, the caller says he'll need some information for "verification purposes"-your birth date, social security number, maybe even a credit card number.

This is when you should hang up the phone. It's a scam.

Jury scams have been around for years, but have seen a resurgence in recent months. Communities in more than a dozen states have issued public warnings about cold calls from people claiming to be court officials seeking personal information. As a rule, court officers never ask for confidential information over the phone; they generally correspond with prospective jurors via mail.

The scam's bold simplicity may be what makes it so effective. Facing the unexpected threat of arrest, victims are caught off guard and may be quick to part with some information to defuse the situation.

"They get you scared first," says a special agent in the Minneapolis field office who has heard the complaints. "They get people saying, 'Oh my gosh! I'm not a criminal. What's going on?'" That's when the scammer dangles a solution-a fine, payable by credit card, that will clear up the problem.

With enough information, scammers can assume your identity and empty your bank accounts.

"It seems like a very simple scam," the agent adds. The trick is putting people on the defensive, then reeling them back in with the promise of a clean slate. "It's kind of ingenious. It's social engineering."

In recent months, communities in Florida, New York, Minnesota, Illinois, Colorado, Oregon, California, Virginia, Oklahoma, Arizona, and New Hampshire reported scams or posted warnings or press releases on their local websites. In August, the federal court system issued a warning on the scam and urged people to call their local District Court office if they receive suspicious calls. In September, the FBI issued a press release about jury scams and suggested victims also contact their local FBI field office.

In March, USA.gov, the federal government’s information website, posted details about jury scams in their Frequently Asked Questions area. The site reported scores of queries on the subject from website visitors and callers seeking information.

The jury scam is a simple variation of the identity-theft ploys that have proliferated in recent years as personal information and good credit have become thieves' preferred prey, particularly on the Internet. Scammers might tap your information to make a purchase on your credit card, but could just as easily sell your information to the highest bidder on the Internet's black market.

Protecting yourself is the key: Never give out personal information when you receive an unsolicited phone call.

Joseph R. Boisclair (DOB: 9/27/1961) of 37 Plenty Street, Warwick is wanted under the 24 hour rule for a domestic assault that occurred on 2/4/2008 at 10:30pm. The subject made a threat to harm himself, unknown method. He drives a 1998 Green Chevy Pickup with combination 90049. If located please contact the East Greenwich Police.
