Boston Police Capture Breaking and Entering Suspect after Foot Chase in the South End

At about 5:31pm, on Monday, January 23, 2012, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to a breaking and entering at at a residence on Warren Avenue.

On arrival, officers spoke with a witness who heard someone in the foyer area of the building. The witness reported hearing a loud sound at a nearby door. Officers immediately observed the apartment door broken and notified additional officers that they were surrounding the perimeter.

Upon entering, officers observed a deadbolt from the damaged door on the steps. Officers announced their presence, “Boston Police” and proceeded to enter the residence. Officers observed a bedroom door that swung partially closed. Officer heard a sound, which sounded as if someone was in the bedroom.

Officers made entry into the bedroom and observed an open rear door that led to the back alley. Officers exit the apartment through the rear door. Officers observed one set of footprints that led from the apartment to the patio and into the alley. Officers followed the foot prints in the alley.

While officers were in the alley they observed the suspect fleeing on foot towards Clarendon Street. Officers then announced their presence, “Boston Police Stop” and the suspect did not comply. Officers engaged in a foot chase with the suspect. Officers were able to stop the suspect after a brief struggle. An officer was injured during the apprehension.

The male suspect, Mark Brown, 33, of South Boston was arrest for Breaking and Entering and Willful and Malicious Destruction of Property.

South End B&E Suspect Caught in the Act

Vigilant Officer Apprehends Perp Suspected of Residential Break-ins

On January 19, 2012, a concerned community member called 911 immediately upon spotting a suspicious individual in the area of W. Newton St. The call from the watchful citizen prompted an all-out police broadcast resulting in the swift capture of a perpetrator suspected of local residential break-ins in the South End area of Boston. Officers arrested Lorenzo Gross, 41, of Dorchester and charged him with Dwelling House; Day Breaking And Entering and possession of burglarious tools.

Earlier this month on January 2, 2012 at around 10:13am, officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering on Claremont Pk. Upon arrival officers met with the victim who stated to police that she had been away from her home for about a week. When the victim arrived back, she observed that the front door was damaged and her apartment broken into. The victim also reported to officers that an Apple I Mac desktop computer, wireless keyboard and mouse were stolen from the apartment.

On January 19, 2012, officers from District D-4 received a call in the area of W. Newton St. of a report of a suspicious person. The caller described the suspicious person as a male, about 200 lbs., in his 40s and wearing a dark blue jacket with the word Polo written on it. The caller also reported that the male was walking down W. Newton St. towards Columbus Ave.

Upon hearing the broadcast with the description, a Sgt. Detective immediately proceeded down Pembroke St. towards Tremont St. when he observed a suspect matching the description on the top stair case of a residence on Pembroke St. The detective detained the suspect until other units arrived.

The suspect identified himself as Lorenzo Gross. At the time of arrest, the suspect had in his possession a pair of wire cutters, a screw driver and a credit card with another individuals name on it. Detectives on the scene were able to positively identify Gross as a suspect from a prior B&E that occurred at a residence on Claremont Pk. in December. Detectives were actively investigating the December incident and recognized Gross based on security footage obtained from that incident.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into Gross to determine the possibility of his connection to prior residential break-ins in the area.

Commercial Robbery Prevention Tips

Things to do to prevent a robbery:

Keep your front doors and windows clear or signs and posters to allow good, two way visibility. Employees can see suspicious persons outside. Passers-by can see inside.
Keep the outside of your business well lit at night.
Make sure your cash register area is clearly visible to outside observers.
Keep your business looking neat and clean. A clean environment is not only good for business but uncomfortable to robbers.
Practice good cash control. Keep a minimum amount of cash in your cash drawer and make regular drops to safe.
Make bank deposits as often as possible, never less than once a day.
Use video camera surveillance and make it well known.
Use cameras or mirrors to observe all areas of the store.
Be alert for "customers" who seem to be loitering or glancing around the store while appearing to shop or browse through a magazine.
If you see someone who is acting suspicious inside or outside, call the police to have them checked out.
Keep side and back doors locked. have employees use the main entrance, if possible.
Greet everyone who enters your business.
Place markers at the entrance that employees can use to help gauge the height of a robber as he leaves.

Things to remember during a robbery:

Try to stay calm. Don't make any sudden movements to upset the robber.
Do exactly as you are told. DO NOT RESIST.
Activate your alarm ONLY if you can do so secretly.
Tell the robber about anything that might surprise him, such as someone who is expected to arrive soon.
If you have to move or reach, tell the robber what you are going to do and why.
The longer a robbery takes the more nervous the robber is, so try keep it short. The average robbery takes about 2 minutes.
Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe him later.
Note his direction of travel when he leaves.
Try to get a description of his vehicle ONLY if you can do so without exposing yourself to harm.

Identification Wanted: Boston Police Detectives Seek to Identify Individuals Connected to Attempted Robbery and Assault –

Posted by MediaRelations on November 21, 2011 · Boston Police detectives seek to identify both the victim and the suspects pictured in a surveillance video which clearly portrays a violent assault and attempted robbery.

About 11:50am on Monday November 21, 2011, officer received a radio call for a robbery at 301 Massachusetts Ave. On arrival Boston police officers met with Northeastern police officers and were shown a video of an attempted robbery and assault and battery which took place in the area of 285 Huntington Ave.

The video showed a female victim walking down Huntington Ave when she was attacked from behind by six suspects. The six suspects are described as:

Suspect #1) described as a dark skinned female wearing a black jacket, white pants attempted to snatch her pocketbook from her by forcefully pulling it off her shoulder.
Suspect # 2) described as a dark skinned male wearing a blue jacket, grey hooded sweatshirt pulled over his head, blue jeans and white sneakers.
Suspect #3) described as a dark skinned female wearing a white hooded sweatshirt pulled up over her head, black backpack, and dark gray sweatpants.
Suspect #4) described as dark skinned female black jacket black backpack and jeans.
Suspect #5) described as a dark skinned female wearing a camouflage jacket and blue jeans.
Suspect #6) described as a dark skinned female wearing a black jacket, black backpack and black pants.

The video depicts the above suspects forcefully pulling the victim to the ground where she was punched and kicked in an attempt to take her bag.

The video shows that the victim was able to retain her bag. The victim at this time has not made herself known to officers.

Dear Students,

Most of you will be leaving shortly to celebrate the long Thanksgiving weekend. Whether you are traveling near or far, the majority of you will be leaving your living spaces vacant and unattended. I want to take this opportunity, as I often do, to offer a few safety tips and reminders so that you do not fall victim to a crime and that your personal possessions and space are protected.

As always, please make sure you secure your on and off campus housing units when you leave by locking all doors and windows. Certain areas of the city experience higher levels of house breaks due to students forgetting to lock doors and windows during the departure for the holidays.
If you have air conditioners, please remove them from the windows especially those where there is access to a fire escape. If they cannot be removed, make sure they are securely fastened. Ask someone knowledgeable if you need assistance.
Please take any and all of your electronic devices of value home with you since these are often attractive targets. Jewelry, game systems and iPods also tend to be items that are attractive to would-be perpetrators.
It is just as important to secure your on campus units. Do not get a false sense of security simply because your rooms will be monitored. Lock your dorm room doors and windows.
If you have trusted neighbors living next to, or adjacent, let them know you are going to be away so that they can keep an eye on things. Conversely, if you are going to be staying home, keep an eye on your neighborhood and call 911 if you see anything suspicious.

Commercial Burglary

Boston Police are investigating these recent incidents of Burglary

D-4 – CC#110613961: Between 6:05am and 6:25am on 11/09/2011, unknown suspect(s) gained entry into a business located in Copley Place by forcibly breaking two sets of glass doors. An undisclosed amount of merchandise was removed.

D-4 – CC#110615958: At approximately 3:30am on 11/09/2011 Officers responded to an alarm on the low numbered block of Newbury Street. An unknown suspect(s) had broken a front window in order to gain entry into the building. Once inside, the suspect used a fire extinguisher to break into a secured office and removed computer equipment.

D-4 – CC#110575783: At approximately 11:27pm on 10/19/2011, an unknown suspect(s) entered a business located on the 200 block of Huntington Avenue. The suspect attempted to remove the contents of the cash drawer but it was empty. There was no sign of forced entry.

D-4 – CC#110566880: Between 1:30am and 2:00am on 10/17/2011, an unknown suspect(s) entered the business during operating hours and hid until closing. The suspect forced open the cash drawer after closing and removed the drawer which contained approximately $200.00 USC.

Special attention to South End and Fenway area residents!!

Citizens should be aware that there have been reports of Breaking and Entering into dwellings in this neighborhood. Intruders have been gaining access through open windows, air conditioners, and unlocked doors. They have been using fire escapes as their route.

The tips below should be followed to help prevent you from becoming a victim:

When not at home:

Lock all windows

Draw blinds or shades

Leave a light on

Lock all doors, do not hide a key

Have a friend collect mail daily

Report suspicious activity

When at home:

Be sure to monitor open windows

Install locking device which allows windows to open 6 inches or less

Keep your doors locked at all times

Keep your house phone/cell phone on at all times

Collect all mail & newspapers daily

Report suspicious activity

Dear Students,

I hope you are all anticipating the warmer weather and have adjusted to your spring schedules. On behalf of the

Boston Police Department I want to take this opportunity, as I often do, to offer several safety tips and to give

you some information for the upcoming weekend.

There are two major events that signal the start of spring; opening day in Boston for the Red Sox and the Boston

Marathon. The Red Sox will kick off their season on Friday with the NY Yankees and play throughout the weekend.

Additionally, we have the running of the 115^th Boston Marathon. Both events present public safety challenges and we

want to ensure that you are informed, that you are safe and that you conduct yourself appropriately.

As always, please make sure you secure your off campus housing units when you leave and lock the doors at all times. Certain areas of the city experience higher levels of house breaks due to students forgetting to lock doors and windows. If you have air conditioners make sure they are securely fastened. Ask someone knowledgeable if you need assistance. Please take your electronic devices of value home with you since these are often attractive targets. If you are walking around Boston anytime, please always be aware of your surroundings. Electronic devices such as iPods and expensive phones are often the target of young adults who assault students and take these devices. Try and walk with a companion and in well-lit areas.

Due to these large scale sporting events there will be considerable crowds in/around the Fenway and downtown areas as well as an increased police presence. There will be access restrictions on certain streets which may make getting around a bit more challenging. If you do not have reason to be in these areas please do not go to these areas. There will be a zero tolerance policy towards public drinking, open containers of alcohol and intoxication. Also, a reminder that you should not be congregating on rooftops, fire escapes and porches. Your safety, and the safety of the public, is our primary concern.

It is our hope that you enjoy the weekend festivities and celebrate in a safe and responsible manner. Please keep in mind that you all play a role in our effort to ensure that the City of Boston is a shining example of good sportsmanship and pride.

Residential Burglaries

A Message from Boston Police District D-4

Incident Descriptions:

Active Area—Fenway / Park Drive

D4—CC# 110062331: Between 2/4/11 @ 7:00 PM & 2/5/11 @ 1:30 AM, unknown suspect/s gained entry into a Park Dr. address (200 block) Apt. 21 by forcing open a bathroom window, adjacent to the fire escape. An additional window in a common stairway between the 2nd and 3rd floors was also observed open and adjacent to the fire escape. The contents of a backpack were observed removed and thrown around the apartment. Two laptops, a video camera, jewelry, $500 USC, and a backpack were removed.

D4—CC# 110064258, 110064373, and 110064374: Between 2/5/11 @ 6:00 PM & 2/6/11 @ 2:00 AM, unknown suspect/s gained entry into a Peterborough Street address (100 block). 3 apartments were broken into: Apt. C by accessing a bathroom window, Apt. 21 by accessing a bathroom window, and Apt. 19 by accessing a kitchen window, which is adjacent to the fire escape. In all incidents the front door was observed unlocked. Two laptops (6 total) were removed from each of the three apartments.

Residential and Commercial Burglary

A Message from Boston Police District D-4

Incident Descriptions:

A Concord Square residential address was burglarized while the victim was out of town. The victim returned on 02/03/11 to find her home had been burglarized. Damage was observed to front door plate and pry marks were found. Small electronics and jewelry were stolen.

A St. Botolph Street residential address was burglarized some time between 9:30am and 3:45pm on 02/03/11. Damage was observed to the door lock. Small electronics and jewelry were stolen.

A Mass.Ave. (600 block) commercial property was burglarized just after midnight on 02/03/11. The perpetrator gained access to the store front by breaking the glass of the front door. The cash register was stolen.

***Pocketbook and Purse Safety:

1. Keep a good hold on your pocketbook and if possible, cross the strap across your chest (and not freely hanging at your side when walking).

2. When walking always keep physical contact with the pocketbook (Ex. Resting your hand or arm on the side of it). This will help with pickpockets.

3. Make sure your pocketbook is completely fastened at all times. If possible carry your wallet, cash, credit cards, and small high value items in a front pocket of your clothes.

4. If you place your pocketbook in a shopping cart, run the strap through the metal bar to secure it, (So someone cannot walk off with it. Also make sure the pocketbook is completely fastened shut). Also keep your wallet and money in your hand or front pocket of clothing.

5. When using the restroom, do not place your pocketbook on the floor (Do to the open space at the bottom of stalls, a suspect can just reach in and grab it).

6. When seated at a table or countertop, do not hang your pocketbook/bag on your seatback. The safest place is either on your lap or at your feet (not to the side where belongings can be removed without your knowledge)

7. If you leave your purse in your car while you shop, secure it in the trunk, or out of sight, where it will not be visible to people walking past.

Armed Robbery Arrests

Vigilant Officers Nab Serial Armed Robbers

On October 13, 2010 at 11:01AM, officers responded to 396 Beacon Street in relation to a robbery that occurred at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave. and Boylston St. around 10:50AM.

On arrival, officers spoke to the victim who reported that two black males robbed him of his described Apple I-Phone while he was walking inbound on Boylston Street. The victim stated to officers that as he walking he observed the two suspects cross the street toward him. One of the suspects, according to victim, upon nearing him stood in front of him with his hand in his right pocket (as if armed with a firearm) and exclaimed, “Give me your cell phone or I’ll shoot you!” The victim, not hearing the suspect, said “Excuse me!” at which point the suspect exclaimed, “Give me your phone!” An exchange took place between the suspects and the victim during which the suspects indicated to the victim that no one was around to help him and started counting down telling the victim that he would shoot him if he didn’t hand over his cell phone by the time that the suspect finished counting down.

The victim reported that he handed over his cell phone to the suspects and didn’t look back at the suspects until he was almost a whole block away and at that time noticed that the suspects were not in sight. Officers, after speaking to the victim, broadcast descriptions of the suspects to other officers in the area. Based on those descriptions, officers stopped two individuals matching the suspects’ descriptions in the rear of Westland Ave. around 11:45AM. The victim was transported to the location of the suspects and positively identified both suspects.

Pursuant to investigation after the arrest of the suspects, detectives were able to determine that the suspects were responsible for twelve (12) other robberies of cell phones in the Massachusetts Avenue/Newbury Street/Hemenway Street and Westland Avenue areas dating back to mid July.

The two suspects, Lamont T. Tracey, 19 and Arthur T. Willis, 19 both of Dorchester were arrested and charged with Armed Robbery and Receiving Stolen Property.

The suspects will be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court.

District D-4 Halloween Safety Tips

Parents should establish a route for children and stay within familiar areas and surroundings.
Remind kids not to enter strangers' homes or cars.
Remind children to avoid homes without an outside light on.
Attach your phone number and address to your children’s costume.
Take a flashlight.
Be sure clothing/costumes are bright, reflective and flame retardant.
Set rules about not eating treats until kids get home. Be sure to inspect all treats before allowing kids to eat them.
When in doubt, throw it out! Candy that has been opened should be thrown away. Any homemade treats or fruit should be inspected closely.
Never cross the street from between parked cars.
Watch open flames from jack-o-lanterns as they can catch costumes and long wigs on fire.
Make sure that fake knives, swords, and guns are made from cardboard or other flexible materials to avoid accidental injury or worse, have them mistaken for the real thing!
It is also important to ensure that your home is safe and accessible to trick-or-treaters. As adults there are some very simple things we can do to make the evening safe everyone.
Turn on your porch light.
Move lit jack-o-lanterns off the porch where kids get bunched up if they are trick-or-treating in groups.
Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
Drive slowly all evening. You never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.
Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the police. Call 9-1-1

IDENTIFICATION WANTED

Detectives are seeking to identify the individuals in attached photo as part of an investigation regarding a recent larceny incident on Newbury Street.

Incident Description:

On October 1, 2010 at 3:14pm, a larceny occurred at Chanel, located at 5 Newbury St. It was reported that the suspects took about 40 handbags, two jackets and other accessories. The group fled across Arlington St. through the Public Gardens.

The suspects are described as:

• BM, 5’08”, heavy build, wearing a white polo with blue stripes

• BM, 6’02”, heavy build, wearing dark clothing, about 20-30 years old

• BM, 5’07”, medium build, dark clothing, about 20-30 years old and;

• BM, unknown height about 20-30 years old.

These individuals are NOT wanted at this time. This information is being provided for identification purposes only.

Safety Tips:

The Boston Police Department would like to remind our partners in the retail business community to take certain measures to avoid being victimized. The number of security cameras as well as their placement is a very important deterrent. Staffing also serves as a deterrent. A sufficient number of employees are needed to cover the retail areas of your business if you do not employee security staff. An employee should be located toward the front of the store in order to deter a thief from simply running into the store and running out again with unpaid merchandise. Also, placement of expensive merchandise away from the front entrance is also an effective strategy. According to the latest statistics, District Four has experienced an increase in Robberies and attempted robberies in 2010 versus the same time period in 2009. A majority of the street robberies have involved the theft of electronics (cell phones) and cash. The Community Service Office would like to remind residents and visitors alike about what they can do to avoid being a victim of a street robbery.

Victims

Street robbers search for victims who appear to have money or other valuables—for example, students and tourists. They also target people who appear to be the most vulnerable—like young adults using ATMs alone at night or under the influence of alcohol.7 Offenders also look for victims who seem unaware of their immediate surroundings. Pedestrians, who look lost, are using a cell phone, are rummaging through their bags, or are listening to MP3 players might appear less alert and more vulnerable to street robbers than other people.

Times, Days and Locations

Overall, street robbery patterns appear to cluster by times, days and locations—for instance, street robberies often occur on weekends, when entertainment districts are busier and associated businesses are open later. With that in mind, below we have summarized how street robberies cluster by times, days and locations.

Times. Overall, most street robberies occur at night. For some groups, however, peak robbery times vary with their routine activity patterns. For instance, most elderly people run errands early in the day. Accordingly, offenders usually rob older people (65 and above) in the morning and early afternoons.8 By contrast, offenders are more likely to rob youths (aged 17 and below) between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.9 This timeframe aligns with school dismissal, when students routinely go home or elsewhere. Yet offenders usually rob young adults during the evening.10 This group is often in public later at night in pursuit of entertainment. Drunken bar patrons or migrant workers returning home after work on paydays might also be at high risk during late-night hours due to the absence of effective guardians and the remote locations of some entertainment venues.

Days. In general, most street robberies occur on weekends. In Cincinnati, for example, most street robberies occur late on Saturday evenings and early on Sunday mornings.11 U.K. street robberies also increase on weekends—a pattern linked to social functions that attract many targets in a single area.12

Locations. Most street robberies occur in urban areas. U.S. robbery victimization rates are about twice as high for urban residents than suburban residents.13 This trend is similar in England and Wales. Almost half (44%) of street robberies occur one mile or less from the victims' homes—perhaps because people are near home most of the time or offenders specifically target them near their homes. Other frequent robbery locations include parking lots and garages—followed by parks, fields, playgrounds, and areas near public transportation.14 Street robberies associated with public transportation are more prevalent in areas like larger cities, where its availability and use are common.

Targets

Finally, street robbers tend to take certain items during a robbery: cash, purses, wallets, credit cards, mobile phones, MP3 players, jewelry, clothing, and other small electronic devices (e.g., cameras and smaller laptop computers). The proliferation of small, portable, expensive electronic items (see figure) may be linked with street robbery in some locations.15 The items listed above are "hot products"16 that have similar CRAVED characteristics:

Concealable—the robber can hide the items on his or her person;
Removable—the robber can easily take the items from the victim;
Available—the items are commonly found on potential victims;
Valuable—the items are useful to the robber or others;
Enjoyable—the items are fun to use; and
Disposable—the robber can easily sell the items to or trade the items with others.17

D-4 Junior Police Academy

During the week of August 16^th through the 20^th, Area D-4 held its annual Boston Police Junior Police Academy through the Community Service Office.

This program is for children ages 9 through 12, and introduces the participants to the various operational components of the Department and an enrichment curriculum, with field trips planned to various city attractions.

The children (recruits) each received a backpack, t-shirt, water bottle and a note pad (to take notes in order to participate at the end of the programs essay contest).

This year’s activities included a visit to the Boston Police Academy to learn all about the process from entering as a recruit, to graduating as a police officer, including learning about court procedures in a mock courtroom. The recruits enjoyed a demonstration by the K-9 Unit and a boat ride around Boston Harbor with the Harbor Patrol.

The recruits and staff along with the Boston Youth Fund summer employees, enjoyed a cookout provided by the cafeteria staff at Boston Police Headquarters as well.

When the recruits weren’t learning about the police department, they were experiencing fun activities in and around the city.

There was a tour of Fenway Park (including the Green Monster), a trip to the Museum of Science, along with a visit to the J.F.K. Museum, guided by retired Community Service Officer John Sacco. In addition, the weather cooperated beautifully enough to enjoy a Duck Tour, a visit to Castle Island, besides a trip to Boston Bowl.

At the end of the week a graduation was held, certificates and souvenir photographs were handed out to the recruits. In addition there was a surprise in store for Sgt. Provenzano, Officer Slyne and Officer McCarthy. Each of the recruits wrote a letter of thanks and appreciation to the community service officers for a memorable week.

Cathedral Shines 2010

On a beautiful summer day, the 10^th of July to be exact, the community joined together for Cathedral Shines as well as Unity Day.

Officers, neighbors, residents and teens gathered at 8am Saturday morning to clean up the Cathedral Housing Development, the first annual event that the District 4 Community Service office dubbed Cathedral Shines.

The cleaning idea came to the officers after attending a Cathedral Housing Development community meeting, where residents explained that doors leading outside had broken locks that have been that way for months. Homeless people and junkies had been inundating the halls, leaving needles and waste indoors, and dirtying resident property.

So before the locks were fixed, the answer was to arm themselves with brooms and spray cleaners and spend a good four hours of their Saturday scrubbing 42 Harrison Archways from head to toe.

One of the most important victories of the day, D-4 Captain Paul Ivens pointed out, was cleaning the dirty windows on the first floor. “You could hardly see in, and that’s the first line of defense as far as deterring crime, you want visibility. Even a small thing like that could make a big difference.” If a place is nice and clean then they will go some other place.”

The Cathedral’s Annual Unity Day celebration was also a success. Tables were set up with information about programs like Healthy Baby while others boasted paint sets for face painting. Kids crawled through a fire truck that was parked near the celebration, and cooled off from a running hose.

All the residents enjoyed a barbecue that community volunteers prepared.

On Wednesday, July 14^th, 2010 at approximately 3:45am, Officers from D-4 responded to a commercial alarm at 182 Newbury Street, The Sunglass Hut.

On arrival, Officers observed the glass front door to be broken. Officers entered the building and a search for suspects proved fruitless.

Security cameras captured video of two suspects (both wearing dark baseball hats, hooded sweatshirts, and gloves) stealing several pairs of sunglasses.

Ramler Park on Peterborough Street

In Boston, located at 130 Peterborough Street in the West Fenway neighborhood, sits the Dorothy and David Ramler Park. It is a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life that lies just blocks away. The park was created through a gift of land by the family of David Ramler. In 1999, seizing the opportunity to create a much-desired community park, a group of residents formed The Friends of Ramler Park to promote the planning, development, and maintenance of Ramler Park. With support from Mayor Thomas Menino and the Boston Parks Department as well as the generosity of numerous individuals, businesses, foundations, and institutions.

Designed by Landscape Architect Elena Saporta, Ramler Park is richly planted with many species of trees, shrubs, and perennials to offer interest for all seasons. The decorative fountain, funded by the Henderson Foundation, is a lively centerpiece. This park is a home for lots of birds.

The park is enveloped by an unusual ornamental fence commissioned by sculptor John Tagiuri and funded by the Edward Ingersoll Browne Fund.

There is also a unique trellis adorned with columns donated as a gift of the Edward Tutunjian Family. Per an agreement with the Boston Parks Department, the friends of Ramler Park is responsible for the preservation and specialized care of this unique public asset. It is truly an urban oasis in the middle of a large city.

Please respect the beauty and tranquil surroundings when visiting the park by following the rules that are in place:

1. The park is closed from Dawn to Dusk.

2. No Alcohol is allowed at any time.

3. Keep out of the Fountain.

4. NO skateboarding, rollerblading, bicycles, or dogs allowed.

Ramler Park has become a truly superb public space. Concerts are hosted in the summer and there are year-round volunteer opportunities. There are ways you may support Ramler Park:

Recent Street Robberies Back Bay/ Fenway

Captain Paul Ivens and the Officers of District 4 would like to inform you of recent street robberies in the Back Bay and Fenway. On at least two occasions, two suspects (described as one black male approximately 25 years old and approximately 6 feet in height and one white male also approximately 25 years old and approximately 6 feet in height) have committed unarmed street robberies in the area of the 600 block of Beacon Street and Kenmore Square. Officers would like to remind you to take certain measures in order to avoid being a victim. Pay attention to your surroundings. Don’t walk and talk on a cell phone. Walk purposefully and with confidence. Give the appearance that you are totally aware of your surroundings.
Be aware of your total environment and what is going on around you. Criminals tend to avoid people who have this type of demeanor.

Walk in well lit areas and avoid alley ways or short cuts that are poorly lit or less travelled.

Follow your instincts. If you feel you are in danger, respond immediately. Remember that your personal safety is the first priority.

The Gardens are in bloom

In Boston, within the urban park known as the Fenway, is the Richard D. Parker Victory Gardens/Fenway Victory Gardens. The gardens are now named after Richard D. Parker, who was one of the original organizers of the garden and continued to garden there until his death in 1975. Because of his efforts, the Victory Gardens in the Fenway is the last one of two remaining original victory gardens in the U.S. dating back to World War II. During World War II, much of the food grown was sent to the armed forces, and the remaining portions were rationed. President Roosevelt stated that Americans should grow their own vegetables. The City of Boston set up 49 areas to grow gardens, including plots on Boston Common and Boston Public Gardens. The Fenway Victory Gardens were established in 1942. These gardens are a central part of the Fenway community and are well known to gardeners across the country. The gardens provide the residents in the Boston neighborhoods with a little personal space to grow vegetables or flowers. Some plots even have flagstones and benches for them to walk around or sit and relax. The gardens are private, and, unless you are specifically invited in to admire them, stay out of them and stay on the main paths.

The Fenway Victory Gardens are in full bloom this springtime. Please respect their beauty and tranquil surroundings when visiting the gardens. It truly is an urban oasis in the middle of a large city.

On Saturday, April 24^th, the city held the “Boston Shines 8^th Annual Citywide Neighborhood Cleanup” that included a park clean up of the Victory Gardens. Police officers that are assigned to the Community Service Office at Area D-4 handed out whistles to the gardeners for safety purposes.

On Saturday, May 1^{st @} 7:00 a.m. there will be the annual “Birds of the Back Bay Fens”, a Guided Bird Walk with Dr. Gwilym Jones (Professor of Biology, Northeastern University). Meet at the Japanese Bell outside the Kelleher Rose Garden (by the footbridge across from the Museum of Fine Arts). Thrill to the sight and sound of the array of birds that inhabit the Back Bay Fens each spring. All levels welcome. Bring binoculars. Additional information available on www.fenwaycivic.org

The plaques are back!

On 3/25/10 around 10:50 a.m., a detail officer was informed by a resident in the 100 block of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall that quite a few bronze plaques were missing from some of the benches in the area. The Parks and Recreation Department were notified and upon further inquiry of their maintenance division, it was confirmed that these plaques were not removed by them for cleaning or for any other reason. The missing plaques amounted to 15 donated “Memorial” plaques varying in dimensions, as well as the “Domingo Sarmiento” dedication plaque.

As a result of a joint investigation between the Boston Police D-4 detectives and the Newton Police Department, it was learned that a suspect by the name of Vincent Cedrone, 52, of Newtonville, was involved in an incident in the City of Newton where he was observed transporting a large metal sign that was sticking out of the trunk of his motor vehicle. The suspect also appeared on video surveillance cameras in Belmont, stealing a plaque from their town hall office building. These items when stolen are broken up into smaller pieces and then sold for scrap at various local scrap dealers. There have been a number of thefts that have involved memorial and commememorative plaques that are all made of some type of metal (bronze, brass) in Boston,Newton,Belmont,Lexington, and Watertown.

Six of the Boston plaques were recovered from Cedrone’s residence in Newtonville after the execution of an arrest warrant when they were observed in plain view. Vincent Cedrone was placed under arrest by Newton Police for receiving stolen property. As a result of this arrest, Newton Police recovered six of the fifteen reported stolen memorial plaques from the Commonwealth Avenue Mall area from Hereford St. to Arlington St. in the back bay area of Boston.

ATM Security Tips

Because of the variety of ATMs, the unique characteristics of each installation, and crime considerations at each location, no single formula can guarantee the security of ATM customers. Therefore, it is necessary for ATM customers to consider the environment around each ATM and various procedures for remaining safe when using an ATM.

Criminals select their victims and targets, focusing on the unaware or unprepared. Criminals are also drawn to environmental conditions that enhance the opportunity to successfully complete their crime. The attitude and demeanor you convey can have a tremendous effect on potential assailants. There are a number of things you can do to increase your personal security and reduce your risk of becoming an ATM crime victim.

The following crime prevention tips can help make the use of ATM’s safer for everyone.

Walk purposefully and with confidence. Give the appearance that you are totally aware of your surroundings

Although ATM environmental design issues are covered in the law, there are other considerations that an ATM customer needs to consider prior to selecting and using an ATM. For example:

· Do not select an ATM at the corner of a building. Corners create a blind area in close proximity to the customer's transaction. Select an ATM located near the center of a building. An ATM further from the corner reduces the element of surprise by an assailant and increases effective reaction time by the user

· Identify an ATM with maximum natural surveillance and visibility from the surrounding area. This will create a perceived notion of detection by a criminal and increases the potential for witnesses

· Select an ATM at a location void of barriers blocking the line of sight of the ATM. This includes shrubbery, landscaping, signs and decorative partitions or dividers. Barriers provide hiding areas for would-be assailants

· Select an ATM that is in a well-lighted location

· Whenever possible, select an ATM that is monitored or patrolled by a security officer

· Select an ATM with a wide-angle transaction camera and/or a continuous transaction surveillance camera. Consult the bank or location management for this information

· Solicit prior criminal activity statistics from law enforcement for the ATM site and surrounding neighborhood

· Avoid ATM locations with large perimeter parking lots and numerous ingress and egress points

Considerations Prior To and During Transactions

Always watch for suspicious persons or activity around an ATM. Be aware of anyone sitting in a parked car in close proximity to or at a distance from the ATM location
If you notice anything strange, leave and return some other time. Even if you have already started a transaction, cancel it and leave.
Maintain a small supply of deposit envelopes at home, in your car or office. Prepare all transaction paperwork prior to your arrival at the ATM site. This will minimize the amount of time spent at the ATM
Maintain an awareness of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction. Do not become so involved with your transaction that you are not aware of changing conditions in the area
Do not wear expensive jewelry or take other valuables to the ATM. This is an added incentive to an assailant
If you get cash - put it away right immediately. Do not stand at the ATM and count it
Never accept offers of assistance with the ATM from strangers; ask the bank for help
Never lend your ATM card to anyone; treat it as if were cash or a credit card
If you use a drive-up ATM, ascertain your vehicle doors and windows are locked
During evening hours consider taking a companion along, park close to the ATM in a well lighted area and lock your car. If the lights around the ATM are not working properly, do not use it
When leaving an ATM location make sure you are not being followed. If you are being followed, drive immediately to a police, sheriff or fire station, crowded area, well-lighted location or open business. Flash your lights and sound your horn to bring attention to your situation
If you are involved in a confrontation and the attacker is armed with a weapon and demands your money or valuables, GIVE IT TO THE SUSPECT. Do not resist, property may be recovered later or replaced

Fraud Considerations

Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Do not write it down or keep it in your wallet or purse. Do not tell anyone else your PIN ANYONE !! (including bank employees, the police, etc.)
Shield the ATM keypad from anyone who may be standing or parked nearby or anyone crowding you in an attempt to view your PIN and/or transaction. Use your body as a shield if necessary while you enter your access code
Make sure you retain your transaction receipt. Do not throw the receipt away at the ATM site
The National Consumers League has opened a toll-free number to provide information on ATM frauds and scams. The National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060 employs counselors who will refer consumers to the proper agency for reporting a fraud or scam
Immediately report any stolen or lost ATM card to the proper entities

Please spread the word! Due to the sudden increase of these expensive units being stolen from motor vehicles along with all other electronics (cell phones, laptops, etc.) The Boston Police Department strongly recommends the following:

Remove the ENTIRE unit each time you leave the motor vehicle. This includes the window or dashboard mounting plate, along with the 12 volt plug-in adapter. We also recommend removal of the suction cup mount, along with wiping off the impression mark’s left from the cup on the windshield.
NEVER place the unit in the glove box or trunk for storage. Carry them back & forth from your home or office for total security. We recommend purchasing a small inexpensive camera bag, which allows you to store and transport them perfectly and without causing damage.
Removal of ANY items in plain view from the passenger compartment with any value. This includes loose change and items of ANY value which can cause a thief to forcibly enter your car in search of better items including all of the above.
Retention of ALL electronic devices bought and sold recently including the make, model number and most important THE SERIAL NUMBER OR ESN NUMBER for cell phones in the event of a theft.
Report the theft as soon as possible to your police department. Please bring as much info you have on the item along with you to your visit to the police station in the event of a theft.

What is Business Watch?

Business Watch is a community-based program supported by the police department and similar to the Neighborhood Watch Program. Businesses are encouraged to join and take an active role in reducing crime that affects them and keeping their business district safe.

A Business Watch Program involves:

Business people getting to know each other and working together in a mutual assistance program.
Employees being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities and people to the police department.
Employees being trained to handle emergencies, be a good witness, and in crime prevention techniques.
Implementation of crime prevention techniques such as better building security, fraud and shoplifting prevention.
Businesses taking responsibility for the condition and cleanliness of each individual store and the overall business district.

Requirements:

Have a Watch Coordinator or Business Captain who serves as a liaison with the police. Become knowledgeable about what’s going on in your area.
Coordinate the use of a notification system, either phone and/or email.
Familiarize yourself and your employees with the basics of Business Watch.
Plan regularly scheduled meetings to discuss crime and crime prevention.
Maintain an up to date list of all businesses and contacts within your business district including the business name, address, and business and home phone numbers in the event of an emergency.
Display decals in your window that designates your participation in the Business Watch program.

Each participating business is also encouraged to:

Develop emergency procedures in the event of a robbery, sudden illness, natural disaster, etc.
Develop and train employees in recommended opening and closing procedures, in handling money drops and bank deposits.
Conduct a self-security survey to better secure the building against burglary, robbery and shoplifting.

IDENTIFICATION WANTED: BPD Seek To identify Individual in Connection With Indecent Assault in J.P.

The Boston Police Department is requesting assistance from the public in identifying the individual depicted below. This individual is alleged to have indecently assaulted a woman at Seaverns Avenue / Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. He then fled on foot on Seaverns Avenue towards Green Street. The incident occurred on February 3rd at approximately 8:30am.

This individual has been described as a black male, approximately 5’8” tall, approximately 20 years of age, wearing light colored sweat pants, white sneakers and a multi-colored jacket, red on top with a blue/gray bottom, separated by a horizontal stripe running across his chest. The suspect was also observed wearing a blue hood or large hat that covered his neck. He was also observed carrying a black backpack.

Anyone who knows this individual or has been approached by him and has not reported the incident is asked to contact the Boston Police Sexual Assault Unit at 617-343-4400.

• always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
• When parking, walking or returning to your car, travel in well-lit and populated areas.
• Wear sneakers or shoes that allow for added mobility.

BOSTON POLICE SEEK SUSPECT

Boston Police are looking for a suspect wanted in connection with an armed kidnapping, armed robbery and assault & battery with a dangerous weapon that occurred on January 9, 2010. 44 year old David McKenny, of Winthrop was involved in an incident that occurred near Washington & East Springfield Streets in the South End (District D4). McKenny forced an adult male victim inside a vehicle at gunpoint near Stuart & Tremont Streets and then drove away. While in the vehicle, McKenny pointed the gun at the victim and demanded money. After surrendering money to McKenny, the vehicle pulled over and the victim was forcibly pulled out of the vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene.

McKenny is 5’7”, approximately 215 lbs with black hair and brown eyes.

Call by Responsible Citizen Results in Gun and Drug Arrest

On 01/19/10 around 2:22AM, officers from District D-4 (South End) responded to 45 Dwight St. to investigate a call for a described male with a gun.

On arrival, officers immediately observed a male matching the description of the suspect standing outside. As officers approached the suspect, a witness yelled to officers, “He has a gun, I saw it!” Officers detained the suspect and conducted a pat frisk of the suspect but did not find a gun on his person. Officers did however find a holster on his person much like one that would be used to carry a gun.

Officers next went to enter the building to speak to the caller when they observed the suspect mumbling and his mouth moving in an unnatural manner. Officers then examined the suspect’s mouth and were able to recover several pieces of crack cocaine he had secreted in his mouth a brief struggle. After officers placed the suspect under arrest, they looked around to see if the suspect had discarded any other drugs. While looking for other discarded drugs, officers located a firearm under the front on the front passenger side tire of a nearby parked car. While the officers were recovering the handgun, officers that were speaking to witnesses learned that the suspect had been seen hiding the gun under the front passenger tire. A canine confirmed the location of the gun along with a thermal imager.

The suspect, Mohammed Abdullahi, 18, of South Boston was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Possession of Class B, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class B, and Receiving Stolen Property after the gun was discovered to be reported stolen. The suspect was found to be in possession of additional drugs during the booking process.

Commercial Robbery Prevention Tips

Things to do to prevent a robbery:

Keep your front doors and windows clear or signs and posters to allow good, two way visibility. Employees can see suspicious persons outside. Passers-by can see inside.
Keep the outside of your business well lit at night.
Make sure your cash register area is clearly visible to outside observers.
Keep your business looking neat and clean. A clean environment is not only good for business but uncomfortable to robbers.
Practice good cash control. Keep a minimum amount of cash in your cash drawer and make regular drops to safe.
Make bank deposits as often as possible, never less than once a day.
Use video camera surveillance and make it well known.
Use cameras or mirrors to observe all areas of the store.
Be alert for "customers" who seem to be loitering or glancing around the store while appearing to shop or browse through a magazine.
If you see someone who is acting suspicious inside or outside, call the police to have them checked out.
Keep side and back doors locked. have employees use the main entrance, if possible.
Greet everyone who enters your business.
Place markers at the entrance that employees can use to help gauge the height of a robber as he leaves.

Things to remember during a robbery:

Try to stay calm. Don't make any sudden movements to upset the robber.
Do exactly as you are told. DO NOT RESIST.
Activate your alarm ONLY if you can do so secretly.
Tell the robber about anything that might surprise him, such as someone who is expected to arrive soon.
If you have to move or reach, tell the robber what you are going to do and why.
The longer a robbery takes the more nervous the robber is, so try keep it short. The average robbery takes about 2 minutes.
Try to get a good look at the robber so you can describe him later.
Note his direction of travel when he leaves.
Try to get a description of his vehicle ONLY if you can do so without exposing yourself to harm.

Officers and Detectives from Area D-4 have noticed a recent increase in incidents of residential breaking and entering with a pattern emerging in the point of entry. The breaks, many perpitrated in the East and West Fenway Area, have occurred in residences with air-conditioners in the windows. The suspect( s ) either remove or force the air-conditioner into the residence. The officers have also noticed that many of the breaks have occurred where the windows can be easily accessed via a fire escape. The Boston Police Department recommends that citizens remove the air-conditioners during the Winter months or secure them to the window sill.

Robbery suspects arrested in back bay!

About 9:30pm Bicycle Patrol Officers Coyne and MacDonald responded to a radio call for a robbery in progress at Beacon St at Dartmouth St. The suspects were described as a group of 5 or 6 black males wearing white t-shirts who fled on bicycles on Beacon St towards Mass Ave.Officers Coyne and MacDonald observed the suspects and pursued them down Mass Ave towards Symphony Hall. The suspects were stopped with assistance from the Symphony Hall detail officers. The suspects were then positively identified by the victims as the individuals who demanded their property, punching and kicking one of the victims.Five suspects were arrested and the victims' property recovered. The Community Service Office from Area D-4 would like to remind restaurants and their customers to be vigilent for larcenies of purses and handbags. During the past few weeks we have seen reports of purses and handbags being taken unknowingly from customers as they dined in Back Bay Restaurants. The customers had placed the bags on the back of their chairs or down by their feet and the suspect(s)remove it without being detected. These types of larcenies have occured in the South End and the Fenway restarants as well. South End Robbery Alert!

The Boston Police Department ( Area D-4 )wants to alert residents of the South End about a series of robberies in the area of Shawmut Ave.There have been seven robberies starting on December 29, 2006 up till January21, 2007. The robberies have taken place in the Shawmut Ave area between West Dedham St and West Concord St.Females were robbed of their purses and / or wallets in four of the incidents;males were robbed of their wallets in two incidents, and a cell phone and cash in one incident. The incidents appear to be taking place during different times, on different days of the week, and with different suspect descriptions. Residents are advised to call 911 if they see any suspicious behavior in or around the Shawmut Ave area. We also advise residents to walk in groups and well lighted areas when ever possible.

D-4, Back Bay,Massachusetts: On Saturday, January 6,2007, at 5:30 PM, District 4 officers responded to a 911 call for a robbery in progress at the Coach Store. PO Evon Burroughs was assigned to the paid detail at Copley Mall and observed the suspect exiting the Dartmouth St. side of the property carrying the stolen goods. PO Burroughs ordered the suspect to stop, and he fled into Back Bay Station resulting in a foot pursuit that continued onto the outbound Orange Line track-bed. The officer was able to apprehend this combative, repeat offender and recover $1,154.00 in stolen merchandise.

On Thursday December 7, 2006 at about 3:40am Officer Francis from Area D-4 was on directed patrol on Newbury St relative to commercial break-ins. Officer Francis observed a suspicious male outside Louis of Boston on Newbury St at Berkeley St. The suspect was subsequently arrested for breaking and entering a business and possession of burglarious tools. The Newbury St area has had a series of commercial break-ins in recent weeks. ROBBERY SUSPECT IMPERSONATING POLICE OFFICER IN THE FENWAY AREA!

On November 11, 2006 at about 12:10pm in the Victory Gardens ( Boylston St at Park Drive )a victim was robbed of cash ( u.s. currency ) and his cell phone. The victim was robbed by a Hispanic male about 6'00 tall wearing a black sweat suit. The suspect identified himself as a police officer and displayed an unk weapon.The suspect did not display a badge or any other type of identification indicating he was a police officer. On November 19, 2006 at about 10:10pm at the intersection of Huntington Ave at Forsyth St a victim was robbed of cash ( u.s. currency ) and his cell phone. The suspect was described as a black hispanic male wearing a blue baseball cap with a police loggo on it and a grey hooded sweat shirt. The suspect spoke with a spanish accent, was 6'00 tall with a muscular build.Anyone with any information is advised to either call Area D-4 Detectives at (617)343-4683 or 911 if someone fitting these descriptions is observed. BACK BAY / FENWAY ROBBERY ARREST!

On Sunday November 5, 2006 during the hours between about 8:00pm and 10:30pm there were four robberies in the Back Bay and Fenway. The suspect descriptions varied from two or three black males wearing dark clothing. A witness to one of the robberies, in the area of Hereford St at Marlborough St, observed the suspects enter a green Nissan X-Terra and flee the scene. Officers from Area D-4 observed a vehicle fitting this description at Hemenway St at Museum RD occupied by three black males. ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED IN BACK BAY!

On Saturday October 28, 2006 about 9:20am a female victim was robbed of her handbag while walking in the area of 330 Dartmouth St.The suspect was described as a white male who fled and then entered a red vehicle. There was no mention of a weapon nor was one shown by the suspect.A few minutes later officers responded to a second report of a robbery at Clarendon St at Beacon St. The female victim of the second incident was also walking when a white male suspect attempted to take her purse. The victim screamed and the suspect then fled on foot on Beacon St towards Arlington St. Detectives and Patrol Officers conducted a search for the suspect and subsequent investigation of the incidents. At about 2:30pm a white male named Kurt Konig was arrested for Unarmed Robbery ( Purse Snatching ) and Assault with Intent to Rob Unarmed. LARCENIES FROM AUTOMOBILES INCREASE IN THE FENWAY / KENMORE SQUARE AREA.

The Boston Police Department crime data shows an increase in larcenies from vehicles in the Fenway and Kenmore Square area. The increase in the larcenies were reported during the time period of October 3, 2006 and October10, 2006. Most car breaks are crimes of opportunity in which offenders steal electronics and other valuables which have been left in clear view in the vehicle's passenger compartment. The items most frequently targeted by thieves are,laptop computers,ipods,GPS,radar detectors,loose change, and cds.
