Cambridge Police Share Tips to Help Residents Protect their Mail & Packages this Holiday Season

December 6, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department would like to remind residents to take extra care this time of year when having mail and packages delivered to their homes. Please review the following tips to help protect yourself and your belongings this holiday season.

Protect Outgoing Mail and Packages:

Do not leave mail with checks or money orders in your personal mailbox for pickup by the mail carrier. Take your mail to a postal collection box. These boxes are safer and more secure because they are locked.
Further protect yourself by taking your mail to a post office and handing it to a postal worker yourself.
Do not leave packages on your front porch for pick up by private carriers. Using FedEx or UPS does not mean your packages will be safer. Often, when drivers deliver packages, they leave them sitting on the front porch. During the holidays, thieves will drive around neighborhoods looking for boxes on porches to steal.
If you are sending a package, let the person you are sending it to know that it is coming and when to expect it to arrive so they can make arrangements for pick up.
Insure any packages you are sending for the replacement cost of the items shipped. Most carriers and the United States Postal Service offer insurance.

Protect Incoming Mail and Packages:

Promptly Retrieve Your Mail: The United States Postal Inspection Service strongly recommends that you pick up mail from your mailbox as soon as possible after delivery, especially if you are expecting to receive a check or merchandise.
If you can’t pick up your mail each day, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to do it for you. The U.S. Postal Service can also hold your mail if you’ll be traveling during the holidays.
Report Mail Theft: Approximately 40 percent of the arrests made by Postal Inspectors last year were related to mail theft. If you receive mail with the contents missing, or fail to receive mail you were expecting, you may be a victim of mail fraud. Contact the shipper first to be sure the items were sent properly. If you determine that the shipper was not at fault, immediately file a complaint with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Cambridge Police Currently Searching for Missing Elderly Female

October 7, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department, aided by Massachusetts State Police, are currently searching for a missing elderly female in the North Cambridge area.

The missing is described as a 76 year old South Korean female, 5’2” tall, weighing approximately 150lbs. She was last seen wearing a green shirt and brown vest in the area of Harrison Avenue in Cambridge.

October 8, 2011 - UPDATE: The missing female was located this morning in Arlington. She was safe, unharmed, and taken to the hospital as a precaution. She has been reunited with her loved ones. Sign Up for the New "Cambridge Alert Network"

The City of Cambridge is excited to announce the launch of the Cambridge Alert Network, a new and improved notification system aimed at sharing information with community members in an effective and timely manner via phone, text and email.

“I strongly encourage our residents, businesses and all members of the community interested in receiving Cambridge alerts to sign up for this new notification system,” said City Manager Robert W. Healy. “It will be extremely helpful in communicating information directly to the community during natural disasters, snow parking bans and other types of emergencies.”

The Cambridge Alert Network currently consists of three services: CodeRED, CitizenObserver and Cambridge E-Line.

CodeRED is an emergency notification system that allows the City to send emergency notifications to subscribers via email, text and phone calls. Cambridge land lines will automatically receive emergency notifications by phone, but all are encouraged to sign up with their cell phone number and email addresses as well. This service will be used in the event of emergencies affecting the City, such as snow emergencies, evacuations, large-scale water outages or other significant service disruptions.

CitizenObserver is used by the Cambridge Police Department to send email and text alerts relating to crime. All are encouraged to subscribe to receive neighborhood–specific alerts about emerging crime patterns, announcements about neighborhood meetings and crime-prevention tips.

Cambridge E-Line is a source for general information and communications from the City of Cambridge via email and text. Anyone can sign up for street cleaning reminders, trash and recycling pickup, City news and departmental information.

Cambridge Asks Residents & Business to Prepare for Hurricane Irene

August 26, 2011 – The City of Cambridge is taking various steps to prepare for Hurricane Irene which is predicted to affect the greater Boston area this weekend.

All City agencies and departments are working together to ensure the storm’s impact is minimized as much as possible and the recovery after the storm is quick, safe and efficient.

It is unlikely that evacuations will be required; however, the city will have two emergency shelters ready if needed. The two facilities will be the Peabody School, located at 70 Rindge Ave., and the King Open School, located at 850 Cambridge Street. These facilities will be open and ready to accept residents starting at 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening. Anyone requiring transportation to these facilities should call 617-349-4800 after 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Residents and businesses who have sustained lower level or basement flooding in the past are encouraged to take preemptive measures to reduce damage as the City is unable to pump out basements of private residences and businesses.

Residents and business are also encouraged to secure outdoor furniture and equipment that may become dangerous with the heavy winds that are expected. Please do not use candles in the event of a power failure. Instead, make sure to have flashlights and batteries on hand.

July 12, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department is seeking bicycle donations in an effort to aid community programs this summer.

Several community groups are in need of bicycles for the youths in their summer programs to use, and the Cambridge Police Department is asking any residents who may have an unused bicycle in their garage, storage locker, etc. to please consider donating it for this purpose.

June 29, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department would like to remind residents that bicyclists are prohibited from traveling on sidewalks in business districts within the City.

This restriction is meant to protect both bicyclists and pedestrians from danger and allow people to move freely about the sidewalks outside of businesses without the fear of being struck, and possibly injured, by a passing cyclist.

June 27, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department, in collaboration with the City of Cambridge Consumers’ Council, would like to warn citizens about predatory businesses using door-to-door solicitation in Cambridge to promote energy savings via the delivery of energy to residents’ homes. This activity typically increases during the summer months, and tends to target the elderly or other vulnerable populations.

Several communities in Massachusetts have experienced the same type of activity, with salespeople going door-to-door to promote energy savings via their company. These encounters result in the resident, usually an elderly and/or environmentally conscious person, signing up for a service that promises energy savings by changing the way energy will be delivered to the home.

There is concern about the sales tactics being employed by some companies and whether they mislead potential customers, specifically relating to claims about the Cape Wind Project. Upon signing up, most discover that they experience no savings in their energy costs, and that they may actually increase.

Cambridge Police and the City of Cambridge Consumers’ Council would like to emphasize the risks involved with long term contracts resulting from door-to-door solicitations, and remind residents to always read the fine print and research the company before signing any contracts or service agreements.

June 20, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department Criminal Investigations Section is currently looking into an Advanced Fee loan scam online company and is warning the public to beware.

A company claiming to be based in Cambridge is offering loans to individuals worldwide. The company requests an advanced fee to be wired to them via Money Gram/Western Union to secure the loan. Once this money is wired, the company will then request additional funds. The company will provide documents that appear authentic, and maintains a web presence under the name of Mitchell & Rose Financial.

This company is claiming to be based out of 4 Cambridge Center in Cambridge. The business does not exist at this address, nor do they have a license to conduct this type of business in Massachusetts. The Criminal Investigations Section has previously tracked similar companies to the Ontario region of Canada and has been working with Canadian authorities to track and apprehend the individuals involved.

June 15, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department is reminding residents to act responsibly tonight while viewing Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks.

Understanding that many people will be frequenting local establishments to view the game on television, additional staffing has been added and officers will be visible in areas across the city.

CPD also asks those with plans tonight to please remember to drink responsibly and have a designated driver if you cannot reach your destination by walking or taking public transportation.

No matter the outcome of the game, Cambridge Police encourage people to be respectful of property and obey the law.

COMMUNTY INFO: CPD Warns Residents about Craigslist Rental Property Scams

June 11, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department Criminal Investigations Section has seen an increase in the amount of rental property scams that are seen daily on popular websites like Craigslist, Zillow, and other rental property sites. The scams will advertise a property in Cambridge for rent, at usually a lower than normal price.

Upon conversing with the person via email, they will inform the person that they are overseas or away from the property and were unable to rent the property prior to leaving, and have to conduct the rental process remotely. Upon completing a rental application, the scammer will ask the individual to wire rent via Western Union or MoneyGram, and they will ship the key to the property via FedEx or UPS. The renter never receives a key to the property and loses the money that was wired.

The properties that are being “rented” are generally properties that are for sale, and the photos have been taken from a Real Estate website.

Recommendations to protect yourself if you are looking to rent a property in Cambridge include the following:

· Meet with the property owner or a rental agent at the property location.

· Do not rent a property without being able to have access to the inside of the house.

· Think twice before you wire funds via Western Union or MoneyGram.

With an increase in the number of individuals who are looking to rent property here in Cambridge, be vigilant when searching for property online and if a deal is too good to be true, think twice and don’t become another victim.

The majority of these scams are being conducted by scammers who reside outside of the United States and are similar to other scams that are prevalent online.

CITIZEN ALERT: Materials on MIT Campus Investigated and Deemed Harmless

June 7, 2011 – Public safety officials have cleared the scene at MIT and have announced that the area is safe to re-enter. Officials have investigated and determined there was no threat to campus or public safety.

An object that had the appearance and characteristics of a pipe bomb turned out, upon further examination, to be a collection of harmless materials.

Officials are grateful to the responding federal, state, and local agencies for investigating and ensuring the safety of the campus and surrounding areas.

Officials also thank the community for heeding requests to stay clear of the area while emergency crews completed their investigation.

UPDATE: Water Pressure Restored After Main Break, Water Safe for Consumption

June 5, 2010 – Water pressure has been restored in Cambridge after last night’s water main break on Broadway and Trowbridge Street that caused disruptions to service, flooding, and road closures.

Only a small area near the site of the water main break remains affected at this time.

There is no need to boil water. While some discoloration of the water may appear initially, residents are encouraged to run the water until it is clear. The water has been tested and is safe for consumption.

Residents on the even side of Broadway, from Goodman Street to Quincy Street, may be without water until approximately 7AM tomorrow, June 6th. Crews are working diligently to get residents water as soon as possible.

CITIZEN ALERT: Major Water Main Break at Broadway and Trowbridge Street

June 4, 2010 – Cambridge Police, Cambridge Fire, and the Cambridge Department of Public Works are responding to a water main break on Broadway at Trowbridge Street.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as a large section of Broadway has been shut down between Ware Street and Ellery Street. Trowbridge Street has also been closed from Harvard Street to Broadway.

Residents in the affected area may be experiencing decreased water pressure as a result of the break.

The city is making preparations to temporarily switch over to the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) water supply to offset the disruption caused by the water main break.

Cambridge Police to Participate in Regional Emergency Response Exercise This Weekend

May 20, 2011 – The City of Cambridge Police and Fire Departments will be participating with neighboring agencies in an exercise which will simulate emergency events. The exercise, titled “Urban Shield Boston,” will be a continuous twenty-four hour event during which first responders are mobilized and deployed to a number of sites throughout the Metropolitan Boston Region.

Exercises at each of the nine sites will address infrastructure concerns as well as test the response of SWAT, medical, fire and explosive ordinance teams to critical incidents.

The Tobin School and the National Guard Armory have been designated as the Cambridge site for these exercises. The site will be operational beginning at 8:00AM on Saturday, May 21^st and the exercises at this site will end at 8:00AM on Sunday, May 22^nd. SWAT teams from participating agencies will be arriving during the operational timeframe and will be tested on how well they navigate a hazardous material scenario.

The goals of “Urban Shield” are to provide a multi-layered training exercise to enhance the skills and abilities of our region’s first responders, as well as those responsible for coordinating and managing large scale incidents. This exercise is designed to identify and stretch regional resources to their limits and exercise incident command systems, while expanding regional collaboration and building relationships.

Please be advised that numerous safety precautions have been instituted at all sites during the operation phase and, while there may be some noise and/or gunshots heard, THIS IS ONLY A SIMULATION and no live ammunition or real hazardous materials will be allowed on-site during the drills.

The safety of the public and of our first responders is of paramount importance to the organizers of this event.

May 4, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department would like to remind residents that, as warmer weather approaches, street robberies and other crimes typically increase across the city as more people venture outside to walk and participate in outdoor activities. Expensive electronic devices (cell phones, mp3 players, laptops, etc.) are often targeted by would-be thieves and people are encouraged to keep these items out of plain sight.

In order to help protect residents from becoming a victim of such crimes, Cambridge Police would like to remind students and citizens to take the following precautions when walking at night:

· Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts.

· Always walk with a friend or in a group when possible.

· Walk with confidence on the street and at a good, steady pace. Keep your head up and observe your surroundings. Don't look down at the ground.

· Do not wear earbuds, headphones, or listen to music while walking alone.

· If you feel you are being followed, show you are suspicious – Turn to look at the person. This sends a clear message that you will not be taken by surprise.

· Change directions. If someone is following you on foot, cross the street and vary your pace. If the person following you is in a car, turn and walk in the opposite direction.

· If approached, DO NOT RESIST, especially if you know or believe the robber to be armed. The best course of action is to hand over money and whatever other belongings are demanded as quickly as possible and try to disengage from this confrontational and potentially dangerous situation as soon as possible. Remember, things can always be replaced.

· Try to remember descriptive information about the robber (height, age, race, etc.) in order to relay that information to police when reporting the incident.

April 27, 2011 – Although housebreaks were down 13% in 2010 from the 5-year average, as warmer weather during the spring and summer months approaches Cambridge Police typically see an increase in housebreak activity across the city.

The Cambridge Police Department would like to alert residents to this seasonal pattern and ask that residents take all of the proper precautions to help ensure that they or their homes are not victimized.

Housebreaks most commonly occur during the daytime while victims are not home, or while homeowners are away on vacation. CITIZEN ALERT: Beware of Craigslist Overpayment Scams

April 14, 2011 – The Cambridge Police Department Electronic Crime Unit has recently seen an increase in the number of Fraud incidents involving overpayment scams using the popular website Craigslist and would like to alert residents to take extra caution when responding to posts on the site.

These scams typically originate with an individual responding to an item for sale or a rental property. The seller will generally receive a check, via FedEx, UPS or USPS Express Mail and will be for an amount far greater than the purchase price of the item.

The buyer will often inform the seller to keep some of the extra money for the inconvenience and then wire the remainder via Western Union or Money Gram to a third party for “moving” expenses. Once the check is deposited into the victim’s bank account it is generally returned due to being a fraudulent check.

Before sending any money via Western Union/MoneyGram for a check you received for an amount greater than the price of the item that you are selling, think twice.

Authorities Investigating Homicide in Cambridgeport

March 12, 2011 – Authorities are conducting a homicide investigation into a shooting that occurred early this morning in Cambridge.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Cambridge Police responded to a double shooting that occurred at the intersection of Watson Street and Brookline Street in Cambridge. The victims initially drove away from the scene in order to flag down a Cambridge Fire Truck, which alerted police.

Upon arrival, authorities located three individuals in a white Cadillac, two suffering from obvious gunshot wounds. The two victims were transported to area hospitals where one of the victims, James Lauture, 30, of Cambridge, was pronounced dead. The other victim is expected to survive.

Cambridge Police and State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office are conducting an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. As this is a homicide investigation, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office has primary jurisdiction over this case and any further information and updates must be cleared by the District Attorney before they can be released publicly.

While no arrests have been made, authorities do not believe the shooting incident to have been random, and residents should not be in fear of danger.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (ME).

The investigation remains ongoing.

COMMUNITY INFO: City of Cambridge Declares Snow Emergency Parking Ban Effective at 8PM Tonight

Forecasters have identified the Northeast as part of a weather pattern where large storms will be occurring in close succession for the foreseeable future.

With yet another winter storm approaching, the City of Cambridge would like to remind residents to be prepared as we work to ensure that roadways and sidewalks are safe and passable.

Citizens can do their part by making their best effort to remove snow from their sidewalks, stocking up on ice melt, taking time to clear hydrants and street drains, and remembering their elderly neighbors or relatives who might need assistance clearing their sidewalk. Declaring a Snow Emergency:

The City makes a determination on whether a snow emergency will be declared and that information is given to TV, radio stations, posted on the web, and on the municipal cable channel (channel 8). Parking on City Streets:

When a snow emergency is declared, all streets signed “No Parking During Snow Emergency” will be tagged and cars will be towed. The City will determine the order in which cars will be towed based on street access needs, especially for emergency vehicles. Please do not park on the streets restricted during a declared snow emergency.

So far this season, fewer cars have been towed as residents have done an excellent job complying with snow emergency parking bans. Please remember to stay off the restricted streets during the entire snow emergency. Ticketing and towing will continue as the Department of Public Works makes every effort to get the snow pushed back. This cannot be done if cars park before the ban is lifted.

The City also asks residents to understand that with the amount of snow already in place, and with the additional amounts forecasted, parking restrictions may be extended in certain areas past a declared snow emergency parking ban. If required, these streets will be posted with temporary signage until further notice as a public safety precaution.

Available Off-Street Parking During Declared Snow Emergencies:

Residents are responsible for moving their cars off the streets signed “No Parking During Snow Emergency” and we understand that finding parking can be difficult. That is why the City has made arrangements with four parking facilities that provide free parking when a declared snow emergency is in effect.

Galleria Mall. Enter on Cambridgeside place, Between P.F Chang’s and Cheesecake Factory Entrance. Residents of East Cambridge can park for free in the CambridgeSide Galleria Garage when the declared snow emergency is in effect until 2 hours after it is lifted. However, effective immediately for the impending storm, residents may park in the Galleria Garage for free from now until 8:00 AM on Monday, February 7^th. Residents with a resident permit can also purchase a monthly pass for the Galleria Garage for the month of February for the reduced price of $50.
First Street Garage. Enter on Spring Street. Parking is free if you have a Cambridge resident parking permit from the time when the declared snow emergency is in effect until 2 hours after it is lifted. However, effective immediately for the impending storm, residents can park in the First Street Garage for free from now until 8:00 AM on Monday, February 7^th. Residents with a resident permit can also purchase a monthly pass for the First Street Garage for the month of February for the reduced price of $50.
Green Street Garage, Central Square. Parking is free if you have a Cambridge resident parking permit from the time when the declared snow emergency is in effect until 2 hours after it is lifted.
52 Oxford Garage. This is a Harvard owned and operated garage. Space is limited, and availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. The University reserves the right to cease admittance due to capacity limitations and operation issues.

The Cambridge Police Department would like to remind citizens to take extra care this time of year when having mail and packages delivered to their residence. Please review the following tips to help protect yourself and your belongings.

Protect Outgoing Mail and Packages:

· Do not leave mail with checks or money orders in your personal mailbox for pickup by the mail carrier. Take your mail to a postal collection box. These boxes are safer and more secure because they are locked.

· Further protect yourself by taking your mail to a post office and handing it to a postal worker yourself.

· Do not leave packages on your front porch for pick up by private carriers. Using FedEx or UPS does not mean your packages will be safer. Often, when drivers deliver packages, they leave them sitting on the front porch. During the holidays, thieves will drive around neighborhoods looking for boxes on porches to steal.

· If you are sending a package, let the person you are sending it to know that it is coming and when to expect it to arrive so they can make arrangements for pick up.

· Insure any packages you are sending for the replacement cost of the items shipped. Most carriers and the United States Postal Service offer insurance.

Protect Incoming Mail and Packages:

· Promptly Retrieve Your Mail: The United States Postal Inspection Service strongly recommends that you pick up mail from your mailbox as soon as possible after delivery, especially if you are expecting to receive a check or merchandise.

· If you can’t pick up your mail each day, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to do it for you. The U.S. Postal Service can also hold your mail if you’ll be traveling during the holidays.

· Report Mail Theft: Approximately 40 percent of the arrests made by Postal Inspectors last year were related to mail theft. If you receive mail with the contents missing, or fail to receive mail you were expecting, you may be a victim of mail fraud. Contact the shipper first to be sure the items were sent properly. If you determine that the shipper was not at fault, immediately file a complaint with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

With the holiday shopping season now in full effect, the Cambridge Police Department would like to share some basic tips about shopping mall safety, car safety, ATM safety, and credit card safety to help protect shoppers and their belongings this season.

For those venturing out to shopping malls or stores to buy gifts, try to park in a well lit area or by a light pole. This extra lighting will make it easier for you to detect a suspicious person standing around your motor vehicle. If you get an uneasy feeling about someone standing by your vehicle, go back to the mall and alert security about the suspicious person.

Remember to never leave valuables exposed in your car. After you have been holiday shopping, try not to leave packages exposed in the backseat of your motor vehicle while it is unattended. If you must leave valuables in your car, remember the old adage “out of sight, out of mind” and always place them in the trunk. If you have a station wagon, van, or pick-up truck, place your valuables on the floor and cover them with a blanket.

If you are planning to do most of your holiday shopping online this year, remember that credit cards are at risk too. Keep a list of all your credit cards in a safe place, including their number, and the address and phone number of whom to notify in case of loss or identity theft.

NEWS: Suspect Arrested in Connection with String of Recent Street Robberies in Cambridge & Neighboring Communities

During the early morning hours of November 3^rd, members of the Cambridge Police Department, U.S. Secret Service, Massachusetts State Police, Somerville Police, Brookline Police, Harvard University Police, MIT Police, and Boston University Police worked jointly to arrest armed robbery suspect Santony Joseph, 23, of 9 Earl Street in Malden.

During the investigation of a number of armed street robberies in Cambridge and surrounding communities, police were able to locate the suspect in Medford. Detectives from both Brookline and Cambridge police departments observed a suspect operating a vehicle that fit the description of one of the suspects from the recent string of robberies.

After encountering the suspect and observing evidence inside the vehicle, Mr. Joseph was arrested and charged with armed robbery, armed robbery with a knife, and receiving stolen property with more charges to follow from Cambridge and other communities.

Cambridge Police convened a meeting where members of the department met with representatives from Somerville, Brookline, Harvard, MIT, and Boston University police departments to discuss the recent street robberies and formulate a strategy to address these incidents. Without the information sharing and cooperation that took place between the various law enforcement agencies that were jointly responsible in helping to apprehend this suspect, this arrest might not have been possible.

Cambridge Police are seeking the public’s help in identify Mr. Joseph’s accomplice(s) in these robberies, and ask anyone with information to please call the Cambridge Police Department at 617-349-3300.

CITIZEN ALERT: Two Armed Robberies on Kirkland & Scott Streets

At approximately 11PM last night, a 40 year old male was robbed by two men with a knife on Kirkland Street at Irving Street. While police were responding to that incident, another call came in for an incident that occurred at Scott Street and Bryant Street where a 28 year old man was approached by two black males, one described as very heavy set and the other as tall and thin, matching the descriptions given by the victim on Kirkland Street and similar incidents that occurred last week near MIT. The suspects asked for the victim's property, and when the victim refused, the tall male stabbed the victim in the upper arm while the heavy suspect assaulted him. The suspects took a cell phone, wallet and cash from the victim and fled the area. The victim was transported to the hospital where he received four stitches to his arm.

In response to these recent incidents, the Cambridge Police Department is working with Harvard Police, MIT Police, and Somerville Police to share information and deploy extra resources in a joint effort aimed at catching the suspects responsible for these robberies.

Cambridge Police would like to remind people that if approached and asked for your belongings, DO NOT RESIST – the robber wants your valuables, not you.

Police also ask residents to take the following precautions when walking at night:

•Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your instincts.
•Always walk with a friend or in a group when possible.

•Do not wear ear buds, headphones, or listen to music when walking alone.

MIT stabbing suspect arrested

Police on Friday arrested the suspect in the stabbing that took place Wednesday afternoon outside the restaurant Anna’s Taqueria in Building W-20, the MIT Student Center.

The suspect was arrested in East Boston as a result of a coordinated effort between Boston and Cambridge police. He is in custody in Boston and is due to be arraigned on Friday afternoon on several charges.

Both the victim and the suspect in Wednesday’s attack worked at the restaurant, police said. The victim was taken to hospital with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Police Announce BridgeStat Program to Inform Citizens & Track Crime in Cambridge

The Cambridge Police Department is proud to announce the first release from its new BridgeStat program designed to share information with the public and combat crime in the city.

BridgeStat, similar to the CitiStat program used in New York City, is a multilayered dynamic approach to crime reduction, quality of life improvement, and personnel and resource management. Police personnel meet to devise strategies and tactics to solve problems, reduce crime, and ultimately improve quality of life in their community. Similar systems are in use in other major cities including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Austin, San Francisco, and Baltimore.

Through the new BridgeStat program, the Cambridge Police Department will produce a monthly public report to the community on current police priorities1 in terms of crime, traffic, and disorder issues in the city.

The first iteration of BridgeStat includes information relating to historical trends, a breakdown of crimes by type, strategies the Cambridge Police are deploying to deal with crime patterns that have been identified, and tips for how citizens can protect themselves and help reduce crime in Cambridge. CITIZEN ALERT: Teenage Girl Assaulted on Fulkerson Street

July 7, 2010 – At approximately 9:50 AM on the morning of July 7th, a fifteen year old female was approached from behind by an unknown male suspect on Fulkerson Street in Cambridge. The victim said that she did not initially hear the suspect approach her because she was wearing headphones at the time.

The suspect asked the victim if she wanted some candy, and when she declined, he grabbed her hand, attempting to hold it. When the victim tried to distance herself from the man, he jogged up to her and grabbed her hand again before she ran to get away from him.

The victim stated that the suspect appeared to be a white male, around 45 years of age, approximately 5’6" – 5’7" tall, with a "chubby" build, blonde hair, with a distinctive bald patch at the front of his head. The suspect was wearing a white t-shirt, blue denim shorts, and thick, black-rimmed glasses, and carrying a cane at the time of the incident.

At present time this is considered an isolated event, and there is currently no evidence that it is related to an assault that occurred yesterday at Fresh Pond.

Cambridge Police have placed extra patrols in the area of this incident and it remains an active investigation. The Crime Analysis Unit is coordinating with other departments in Greater Boston to share information and insure that this crime is not part of a pattern.

Cambridge Police advise women to be cautious when walking alone and ask that they walk with someone else whenever possible. People are also advised not to wear headphones and to be constantly aware of their surroundings.

Female Jogger Assaulted near Kingsley Park

At 8:50AM on the morning of July 6th a female resident of Cambridge was knocked to the ground while jogging on the running path near Kingsley Park. She informed police she was jumped from behind by a white male with short, dark, buzz cut hair who was about 5’9” tall.

The male was standing at the path as he watched the woman pass. He then caught up to her, wrapped his arm around her shoulder and threw her to the ground. The woman screamed and saw the man run up the wooden stairs toward Huron Avenue. The woman’s clothing was dirty but she did not sustain any injuries and is assisting the Cambridge Police with our investigation into the incident.

At present time this is considered an isolated event, as there has not been a similar incident reported at the reservation in a number of years.

Cambridge Police have placed extra patrols in the area of this incident and the Crime Analysis Unit is coordinating with other departments in Greater Boston to share information and insure that this crime is not part of a pattern.

Prescription Drug Collection Day to be Part of Hazardous Waste Disposal Day in Cambridge on Saturday, June 19th, 2010

In partnership with the Cambridge Public Health Department and the Cambridge Prevention Coalition, the Cambridge Police Department asks residents to participate in Prescription Drug Collection Day as part of the Hazardous Waste Disposal Day to be held on June 19th, 2010.

On Saturday, June 19th from 9 AM - 1 PM, citizens are asked to please turn in their unused prescription drugs in the rear of the Mass. National Guard Armory located at 450 Concord Avenue in Cambridge. There will be no questions asked -- Just come, drop off any unused medications, and leave.

Upon investigation the company is not located at that address nor are they registered as a business with the city. The company asks for a credit card payment for services which is processed in Mexico. The contact number is a 617 area code claiming to be from Boston, but is in fact a VOIP (Voice Over IP/Internet) phone.

The Cambridge Police Department Electronic Crime Unit has recently seen an increase in the number of Fraud incidents involving advanced fee loan scams. Two companies claiming to be based in Cambridge are offering loans to individuals worldwide. The company requests an advanced fee to be wired to them via MoneyGram/Western Union to secure the loan. Once this money is wired, the person will then request additional funds. The company will provide documents that appear authentic. The two companies that have appeared online are SELKIRK SOLUTIONS and J&K LOAN INSTITUTION (BAYVIEW CREDIT LOANS). Both of these companies are claiming to have Cambridge office addresses that are unfounded. The Electronic Crime Unit is actively investigating reported incidents and working on locating the individuals involved. Before sending any money via Western Union/ MoneyGram for an Advanced Fee Loan, research the company and protect yourself.

Increase in Larcenies

The City of Cambridge has seen a slight increase in larcenies from persons. In most incidents it involves the theft of an unattended bag or items being taken from within a bag. Below are some tips to remember when you sit down in public place to protect your belongings.

Tips for the Prevention of Theft

These crimes are crimes of opportunity and can be easily prevented. Be aware of your surroundings as well as your belongings to keep yourself from being a target.

Never leave your belongings unattended. Even if it is just for a moment, that’s all it takes.

Do not leave you purse or backpack open or unzipped. Use the zippers and snaps to protect your belongings inside. There have been reports of people having their wallets stolen out of their bag even when their bag is on them.

Do not leave your bag on the back of your chair. It can be very easy to slip it off without you noticing. You are better off leaving it on your lap, on the table, or in between your feet where you can feel it.

If you do become a victim of such a crime, please report it to police, even if nothing significant was taken. The more information we have about these crime (including locations, time of day and items stolen), the more likely it will be that we can stop the people who are committing them.

Columbia Street Shooting Incident Arrest Update

On Wednesday, February 10th, Cambridge Police responded to a report of shots fired in the vicinity of Columbia Street near Cambridge Street. As a result of this incident an investigation was initiated. It was later determined that this was not a random shooting incident, but a deliberate and targeted event involving persons known to each other. Based on the evaluation of crime scene evidence, which included the recovery of the firearm, as well as interviews with witnesses, the suspect was identified and warrants sought for his arrest. During the investigation Cambridge Detectives were able to identify the location of the suspect.

During the early morning hours on Friday, March 5^th, Cambridge Detectives, with the assistance of the Boston Police Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshall Service, responded to a Dorchester apartment. After knocking and announcing their presence, peaceful entry was gained and the suspect was placed under arrest for outstanding warrants. The 19 year old Cambridge man will be arraigned in Third District Court for Assault with intent to Murder, Possession of a Firearm, and Discharge of Firearm within 500 ft of a Dwelling.

Flagg Street Closure

On Wednesday, March 3 (weather permitting), crews will begin sewer separation work at the intersection of Putnam Ave & Flagg St. During this phase of the construction, Flagg St will be closed at the intersection.

Project Schedule:

-Construction is expected to last 6-8 weeks

-Work hours are 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday

Traffic Plan during Construction (see attached map):

-During this work, Flagg St will be closed at the intersection of Putnam, and will serve as a two-way dead end, 24 hours a day.

-Access to Flagg St will be from Memorial Drive only.

-Emergency vehicles will have access at all times and all city services will continue.

RE: LONDON ROBBERY ONLINE FRAUD SCAM

The Cambridge Police Department Electronic Crime Unit has recently seen an increase in the number of Fraud incidents involving popular social networking websites (Facebook, MySpace) and email accounts concerning a “friend” stating that they had been robbed in London. A suspect will gain control of a person’s account and instant message or email that person’s contact list. This person will inform the victim that they had been robbed and are stranded overseas. The person then requests that money is wired to them via Western Union or MoneyGram. The Electronic Crime Unit is actively investigating reported incidents. Before sending money via wire, make sure you verify the identity of a friend who makes this request. Protect your own online account by routinely changing your passwords and using numbers, letters and symbols in your passwords.
