There are four (4) separate “OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE” Parades in Columbus on December 11th, 2011 they are listed below.

Background

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of significant importance to the Mexican Catholics. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 & 12, 1531. She is credited with putting an end to human sacrifice of the Aztecs in Mexico.

The Mexican Catholic communities celebrate December 11^th, as Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, considered the “Patroness of Mexico and the Continental Americas”.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PARADE – South East

Christ the King Catholic Church will be sponsoring a parade for Our Lady of Guadalupe that will take place on the south east side of Columbus on December 11^th, 2011.

The local Mexican Catholic community on the south east side of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a parade/pilgrimage. The parade will form on December 11^th, 2011 at 11:00 am on the parking lot on south east corner of College and Livingston and will march to the Christ the King church located on Livingston Avenue. The parade/pilgrimage will start at 11:15 am and will proceed via the below route.

The parade should have a decorated truck and approximately 900 people marching with banners.

Parade/Pilgrimage route:

Exit the parking lot right onto Castlegate

North on Castlegate to Livingston Ave.

East on Livingston Ave. in the east bound lanes to Christ the King Church

Right into the parking lot of the church located at 2777 E. Livingston

The parade will be escorted by special duty Columbus Police Officers with cruisers.

Motorist might expect some congestion in the east bound lanes on Livingston between College and the Christ the King Church at 2777 E. Livingston Ave.

There will be special duty Columbus Police Officers working traffic control for this event.

The annual parade for the Lady of Guadalupe will take place on the west side of Columbus on December 11^th, 2011.

The local Mexican catholic community on the west side of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a parade/pilgrimage. The parade will form on December 11^th, 2011 at 8:30 am on the parking lot of parking lot of Saint Stephen the Martyr church located at 4131 Clime Road. The parade/pilgrimage will start at 9 am and will proceed via the below route.

The parade should have approximately 300 people marching with banners.

Exit the parking lot right onto Clime Rd. to Torrey Hill Dr.

Left on Torrey Hill Dr. to Holly Hill Dr.

Left on Holly Hill Dr. to Sullivant Ave.

Left on Sullivant Ave. to Georgesville Rd.

The annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage will take place in the north side of Columbus on December 11^th, 2011.

The local Mexican Catholic community in north part of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a parade/pilgrimage. The parade will form on December 11^th, 2011 at 10 am on the parking lot of Holiday Inn located at 7007 N. High Street. The parade/pilgrimage will start at 10:30 am and will proceed via the below route.

The parade/pilgrimage is expected to have approximately 1,500 people marching with banners.

Exit the parking lot onto High Street.

South on High Street to Dominion Blvd.

East on Dominion Blvd to Our Lady of Peace at 20 E. Dominion.

This is a 3.7 mile parade/pilgrimage to the church.

There will be special duty Franklin County Deputies working traffic control for this event.

The annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession will take place on the east side of Columbus on December 11^th, 2011.

The local Mexican Catholic community on the east side of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a procession to the St. Thomas the Apostle Church. The procession will form on December 11^th, 2011 at 10 am on Sixth Ave. at Sterling. The procession will start at 10:30 am and will proceed via the below route.

The procession is expected to have approximately 200 people marching with banners and 25 vehicles.

Westbound on Sixth Ave from Sterling

Crossing Cassidy Ave. to the St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

This is about a 6 block procession to the church.

There will be special duty Columbus Police Officers working traffic control for this event.

The City of Columbus, Department of Public Safety, License Section has issued a Roadway Solicitation Permit to the Ohio Newsboys Association (Charity Newsies) for their annual paper sale on Saturday December 10, 2011 between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. The Charity Newsies supply needy school children with several items of clothing for school.

Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

The holiday shopping season has officially started! The Columbus Division of Police is offering the following safety tips:

Carry no more cash than absolutely necessary. If you are carrying cash, safeguard your money by carrying it in your front pocket. Never display a large amount of cash. If possible, pay by check, credit card or debit card.

Take an inventory of your purse or wallet. Write down the phone numbers of your credit card providers. Carry the phone numbers separate from your purse or wallet. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. Keep a record of all your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.

Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

Try to avoid carrying a purse or wallet. If you must carry a wallet, place it in your front pocket. If you are carrying a purse, carry it securely across your body. Never leave your purse unattended, open in a shopping cart, or on a counter.

Always carry your driver’s license or identification card with you. Do not carry anything with you that you will not need. (I.e. social security card or extra credit cards you do not plan on using.)

Shop in pairs or with a group.

Don’t leave cell phones, purses, CD cases or other items of value in your vehicle where they can be seen. Always conceal items of value.

Lock purchased merchandise in the trunk of your vehicle.

Park in a well lit area and lock your vehicle. If you valet park, only leave the ignition key. Take your other keys with you.

If you place your packages in the trunk and plan on more shopping, consider moving your vehicle to another location.

Stay alert to your surroundings. Criminals step up their activities during the holidays. If you are approached by a stranger with a deal that sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Report any suspicious activity to the police at 645-4545.

Report thefts immediately, no matter how insignificant. Police use crime reports to determine how to better serve the public.

JINGLE BELL RUN 5-K

JINGLE BELL 5-K RUN/WALK

The annual Jingle Bell Run sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation will be taking place this Saturday December 3^rd , 2011. The event will be in the downtown and German Village area. This event will include a Kids Snow Flake Fun Run and a Jingle Bell 5-K Run and Walk.

Kids Snow Flake Run:

The formation will start at 9:30 am on Nationwide east of High Street near Max & Erma’s.

The kid’s fun run will start at 9:40 am.

Route for Kids Snow Flake Run:

Start on Nationwide Blvd. near Max & Erma’s

West on Nationwide Blvd to High Street and finish line.

Jingle Bell 5-K Run/Walk

The formation will start at 9:30 am in the following areas.

- for the runners will be on High Street north of Nationwide Blvd.

- for the walkers will be on Nationwide Blvd east of High.

The Jingle Bell Run will start at 10:00 am with the wheelchair division starting 2 minutes earlier at 9:58 am.

Understandably, no one wishes to believe they might become a victim of a crime; however, denial of the problem solves nothing and may actually place you at greater risk of becoming a victim.

You must be prepared to be safe. Prevention is always better than reaction.

Learn to practice safety every single day! While things like personal alarms, tear gas, a weapon or even self defense tactics may help in a bad situation, it is important to understand they are all reactive, designed to be utilized when the problem is actually occurring. It is significantly more effective to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.

General Safety Tips

Stand tall and walk with confidence. Don’t appear to be a willing target. Always be aware of what is going on around you. When walking, stick to well-lighted and busy streets. Walk with a friend(s). Avoid shortcuts through dark alleys or deserted streets.

If harassed by someone in a car, walk quickly or run in the opposite direction to safety. If you become very frightened, yell, don’t scream for help. Never hitch-hike. Accept rides only from people you know and trust.

Don’t flash your cash. Carry only the money and/or credit cards you will need for the day. Avoid carrying irreplaceable personal belongings in your purse. Ask yourself if you can accept losing the things you are carrying. Always have change available for an emergency telephone call.

Know your neighborhood. It seems simple, yet we often do not know what hours stores, restaurants or gas stations are open. Do you know where your neighborhood police and fire stations are located? These are places you may wish to go in case of an emergency.

If you go out for late night snacks, movies or errands, avoid going by yourself. Most assaults happen to a lone victim.

Let someone know where you are going and when you will return. Call if you are going to be late.

Getting Into Your Vehicle

At night, park in a well-lighted area.
Be aware of your surroundings.
Have your keys ready in hand.
Look for anyone near your car or near you.
Check the exterior of your car; check the interior of your car before entering.
At home, lock doors before opening the garage to leave.
Keep your car in working order at all times.
Never let the gas tank fall below half full.

If Confronted Getting Out Of Your Car

Avoid any verbal/physical confrontation. Cooperate, move quickly away from your car. Walk/run away from the immediate area, call the Police immediately! Provide the descriptions of the suspect(s) and/or vehicle(s). If at all possible, Never go with the suspect(s)!

When Driving

Plan your route. Try not to travel alone. Keep your door locked and your windows rolled up. If you do not have air-conditioning, then at least keep the windows rolled up enough to make it difficult for someone to reach inside and take your purse, wallet or keys.

Don’t drive in unfamiliar areas. Avoid “trouble” areas. Look in the rear view mirror often and watch around you – Stay Alert!

Always leave room ahead of your car to escape (don’t box yourself in). DO NOT stop to help stranded drivers – call the police for them. If affordable, a cellular phone can be a valuable safety tool.

When Jogging or Bicycling

Go with a friend and take familiar, well-traveled routes. Do not jog or bike at night (particularly not alone). Do not ride or run with stereo headphones. It is safer to remain alert to what is around (and behind) you.

Parking Lot Safety

Use your senses – Sight, Hearing, and Smell. In most cases these are your only tools. As always, Stay Alert to your surroundings.

Park in well-lighted areas; make sure you lock your car door(s) at all times. Do not leave valuables inside your car, lock them in the trunk. Have your keys ready In Hand when approaching your car. Be aware of what is going on around you, people near your car or you, etc. If you are threatened, yell “Help”, “Fire” or anything to draw attention. Don’t take chances! You do Not have to get out of your car if you do not feel safe. If unsure, drive up to the front of a store or business and summon help, then notify police.

Other Considerations

Do not overload yourself with packages or bundles. Lessen the time it takes you to get into your car. Carry only the items you need in your purse and carry your purse under your coat or close to your body. Don’t leave your purse lying around. Consider wearing a belt bag or “fanny pack”. Record all credit card and bank information in case of theft.

If you work late or at inconvenient times for safety, call ahead and let someone know when you will be arriving and have them look out for you. Use security personnel if available to escort or watch you to your car.

You may wish to consider carrying a can of tear gas. If so, you need to train with it before you need it. Equally important, the tear gas must be in your hand (not in the button of your purse) when you are in a situation and/or area where you might need it.

When you are walking to your car, whether at night or during the day, try to walk with others. Again, if you are suspicious or worried, do not go out to your car at that time. If available, ask a security officer to accompany you to your car.

If you do become a crime victim

Try to remain calm. Do not get into a vehicle unless there is No Other Choice. Get a suspect description and notify the police immediately.

Hold store meetings or safety seminars on a routine basis. Discuss problems and make suggestions. Awareness, communication and some other personal safety considerations would have to include the specific street crimes of Strong Arm Robbery, Purse Snatching and Armed Robbery.

Purse snatch, the most frequent, is usually a hit and run operation in which speed is of the essence. Most purse snatchers are fleet footed teenagers who take advantage of an opportunity. By carrying your purse under your coat or close to your body (not dangling from your hand or arm), you already lessen the risk. As stated previously, avoid carrying irreplaceable items and unnecessary cash or credit cards as well. Minimize the loss if you should become a victim.

A strong arm robbery or “mugging” is robbing by force or threat of force while armed robbery involves the use of a weapon, usually a knife or gun. Again, carry no more cash or credit cards then are actually needed. Be Alert!

When walking, don’t give people opportunities to commit crimes. Stay away from buildings, and walk next to the street. If followed by a car, turn and walk quickly in the other direction.

Be aware of where you are and where you are going. Don’t flash your cash or other valuables. Avoid traveling alone. Avoid dark places, short cuts, alleys, thick trees or bushes and sparsely traveled areas. Have your keys ready at hand.

If You Resist

Understand that to resist a thief is a personal decision. However, if confronted by a weapon, consider if what you are protecting is worth the risk. But always, prevention is the key to living safer.

When discussing safety, most of us tend to think about the physical crime risks only. However, more of us are likely to become the victims of a theft crime. Including auto thefts, the residents of the City of Columbus are the victims of over 40,000 reported thefts per year. The losses are in the tens of millions of dollars! Simple logic tells you that you have a reasonable chance of becoming a victim. Yet, in many cases and with a little effort, the risk for becoming the victim of such a crime can be dramatically reduced.

Crime pervades our lives! But there are some things you can do to lessen your risk of becoming a victim. This information, while not all-inclusive, will provide valuable suggestions in regard to making yourself and your family safer. Nothing is 100% effective. However, well learned and utilized safety tips will certainly improve your opportunity to Live Safely!

Halt Auto Break Ins

The Columbus Division of Police would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens to get in the habit of taking opportunity away from criminals when it comes to your vehicles.
Criminals are opportunists and as such, look for opportunities to take what they need. Roaming area parking lots and streets often provides numerous opportunities to steal laptops, cell phones and even purses or wallets inadvertently left in cars.
Assuming that because car windows are completely closed or doors locked only provide a false sense of security. Criminals often utilize the “smash and grab” technique of smashing a window, grabbing the items of value from the car that are readily accessible and running. This process takes only minutes and is witnessed by no one. The owner returns to their car to find a broken window and their values gone.
Getting in the habit of securing valuables while away from your vehicle helps to take away the opportunity criminals need to target you.
When possible, take your valuables with you. Laptop computers, purses, briefcases, GPS units, garage door openers, cell phones and other small electronics are easy and popular targets for thieves.
If you must leave your valuables in your car, secure them out of sight in a locked compartment or trunk.
Always roll up your windows and lock your vehicle.
Report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.

On Monday, November 21st and Monday, November 28^th from 6:00pm to 9:30pm, COMMUNITY MEDIATION SERVICES OF CENTRAL OHIO (CMS) will offer a FREE, TWO-PART CONFLICT RESOLUTION TRAINING CLASS for individuals who live, volunteer or work for a business or civic organization located in the following five neighborhoods:

What to Do If Stopped by Law Enforcement

From the Officer’s Perspective:

Often, a person who has been stopped by a law enforcement officer forgets that the officer is under a unique and challenging set of circumstances. They are trying to enforce the law while at the same time attempting to ensure your safety as well as the safety of those around you.

When stopped by a law enforcement officer, the average citizen may become angry, fearful or nervous. The officer’s training and experience teaches them to look for and expect these same emotions from criminals they confront. These emotions are often an indication of criminal activity and may be precursors to flight from, or assault on, the officer.

If you are stopped and issued a citation, understand that it is part of the officer’s job. Officers have a duty to regulate traffic and enforce the law.

In all law enforcement encounters remember the Golden Rules
1. Do Not make sudden movements IE: for your wallet, coat, towards your waistband, etc.) Until you have informed the officer of your intentions to do so and the officer has given approval.
2. Do Not carry weapons (Unless you have a permit) or make a joke about having a weapon in you possession.
3. Do Not reach for or display your weapon if you are a CCW permit holder. Comply with the officers orders. Advise the officer that you have a weapon and where it is located if you are detained.
4. Do Not touch the officer or invade his or her personal safety space (3 feet rule)
5. Do Not be argumentative. Being uncooperative will only prolong your encounter.
6. Do Not immediately demand an explanation. Comply first, and then seek an explanation from the officer or the officer’s supervisor.

How to ensure your safety if you are stopped while in your car
1. Pull over to the right immediately upon seeing the law enforcement emergency lights.
2. Remain in your vehicle while the officer approaches.
3. Turn on your interior light if stopped at night.
4. Keep your hands in sight – preferably on the steering wheel where the approaching officer can easily see them.
5. Give your license, registration and proof of insurance to the officer if asked to do so.
6. If you are a Carry Concealed Weapons Permit Holder (CCW), advise the officer “I’m a CCW permit holder and armed” then state where your weapon is located.
7. If you wish to inquire as to why you were stopped or offer an explanation, do so before the officer returns to his or her vehicle.
8. Do not touch, threaten or act in a disorderly manner toward a law enforcement officer.
9. If the officer asks you to step out of your vehicle, do so without any sudden or threatening movements.
10. Give the officer at least three feet of professional space to do his or her job.
11. Remain in your vehicle at all times unless told otherwise.

How to ensure your safety if you are stopped while on the street
If an officer should approach you on the street – it is not because he or she has any interest in upsetting you. If you are detained, keep in mind there is always a reason for which you are most likely unaware.
The most common reasons that cause an officer to stop a citizen are as follows:
1. You might be one of only a few people walking in the vicinity of a crime that has recently occurred.
2. Your clothing might be similar or identical to that worn by the perpetrator of a crime.
3. Someone may have called the law enforcement agency complaining about your presence or that you look “suspicious.”
4. Someone may have pointed you out to the officer.
5. You might be acting in a manner that the officer considers “suspicious” and you act even more suspicious after realizing that the officer is observing you.

The law enforcement officer does not wish to detain you any longer than necessary. As soon as the officer finds that you are not the suspect, he or she will often apologize for the inconvenience and quickly resume the search elsewhere.

The annual American Heart Walk will be taking place this coming Saturday August 27^th, 2011. A few thousand people will be taking part in this walk to benefit the American Heart Association. The walk will start in the Arena District and go north into the Victorian Village and Short North Area, coming back into the Arena District and ending at the Huntington Park Stadium.

Prior to the start of the walk several groups will be having their photograph taken inside the Hunting Park Stadium.

After a comprehensive onsite assessment in April of this year the team leader of the assessment team wrote in the final report of the on-site assessment:

During this on-site, the assessors reviewed policies and procedures, visited several departmental facilities, and interacted with dozens of officers and civilian staff. The men and women of the CDP that we encountered were unfailingly courteous, professional, and helpful, both to us and to the Columbus citizens with whom we observed them come in contact. They keep the department’s equipment and facilities in immaculate condition and by their professional demeanor, it is clear that the members of the agency take justifiable pride in their department.

As previously stated the Columbus Division of Police has exhibited a true dedication to not only the CALEA standards for Law Enforcement Accreditation but also to the intent and spirit of accreditation. They have exceeded many of the standards, used the standards to excel in their professionalism and improve the lives of those citizens they are sworn to protect and serve. Surrender Safely is a progam for wanted persons to turn themselves in and resolve their outstanding warrants. Franklin Co is running the program in August.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I turn myself during Franklin County’s Safe Surrender event in August even if my warrant is NOT from Franklin County?

If you have a warrant from a jurisdiction other than Franklin County, your chances of being taken into custody may be GREATER because authorities from the city or county where your warrant was issued will not be present.

Will there be attorneys on-site where I surrender to assist me?

Yes. In fact, the Franklin County Public Defender’s Office is a participating partner in this program.

Will I go to jail if I turn myself in at the County’s Safe Surrender event?

Everyone’s case is different. However, most of the individuals who surrender during the program will NOT go to jail. It is the goal of Safe Surrender to clear these warrants and to dispose of the case the same day, if possible.

I don’t have a driver’s license. What sort of ID do I need to bring?

You can bring any form of ID that you have – Social Security card, birth certificate, Medicare/Medicaid card, etc. If you do not have any ID, you may still turn yourself in during Safe Surrender. Most participants will be fingerprinted once they register at the Municipal Courthouse.

Do I have to be there at 9am or can I come any time during the day?

You are welcome any time during the program hours. Arriving earlier may help you lessen the amount of time you have to wait.

Can I bring my family/kids with me?

There will be a family waiting aware however supervised child care will not be provided. It is
also possible depending on the volume of participant, that the process of clearing your warrant and disposing of your cause may take a couple of hours, so if you do bring family with you, be sure to prepare them for a lengthy wait.

Neighborhoods throughout Columbus are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the 28^th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and is locally co-sponsored by the Columbus Division of Police.

Columbus Police officers will be participating in the annual event which will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Over 130 community events are planned throughout the Columbus area including live music, porch light vigils, cookouts and multiple kid-friendly activities.

Stay Safe and Healthy During a Heat Advisory

Extreme heat and humidity in the area has resulted in the National Weather Service issuing a Heat Advisory for our area from noon until 9:00 p.m. today. Columbus Public Health and Franklin County Public Health offer the following tips to stay cool and safe:

Stay inside in air conditioning whenever possible. If you do not have an air conditioner, use movie theaters, malls, libraries and other public places that are cool. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.

Drink plenty of water – do not wait until you are thirsty. Avoid beverages with alcohol, caffeine and sugar because they will dehydrate you.

Eat light meals. Avoid hot foods and heavy meals—they add heat to your body.
Dress infants and children in cool, loose clothing and shade their heads and faces with hats or an umbrella. The same advice is good for adults too.
Limit sun exposure during mid-day hours and stay in the shade when possible. Try to limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours when it is cooler.
Do not leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car.
Provide plenty of fresh water for your pets, and leave the water in a shady area. Bring your pet indoors where it is cooler when you can.

Heat related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can strike at any time. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, headache, absence of perspiration and dry, hot flushed skin. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Be sure to think of your pets too. Never leave an animal in the car on hot days and be sure they have plenty of fresh water when outside. Avoid leaving your pet outside on hot, humid days. Bring your pet in when you can.

A four mile running race will be taking place on Saturday July 9^th, 2011 on the eastside of Columbus. The race will be starting from the Bar of Modern Art (BOMA) on E. Broad and will use the below route.

50^th ANNUAL COLUMBUS ARTS FESTIVAL

The annual free Columbus Arts Festival for 2011 will be celebrating its 50^th year. The event will take place in the Discovery District on June 3, 4, & 5 , 2011. The hours for the festival are Friday – Saturday 11:30 am till 10:00 pm and Sunday 11:30 am till 6:00 pm.

The Discovery District is where the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus College of Art and Design, and Columbus State Community College is located. This area is east of Grant, west of I-71, north of E. Broad and south of I-670.

Discovery the art at the Columbus Arts Festival where festival goers can choose from a variety of creative and original works of art including sculpture, painting, photography, woodcarvings, glasswork, jewelry, multimedia compositions, and much more.

Festival goers can also enjoy several different types of foods and drinks from great restaurants and vendors. There is also children’s art activities and different stages of entertainment.

To allow the Columbus Arts Festival to take place in the Discovery District several streets will be closed. These streets and the times for closure are below:

NAVY & MARINE MEMORIAL SERVICE

NAVY & MARINE MEMORIAL SERVICES

On Monday May 30, 2011 the annual Navy and Marine Corp Memorial Services to honor the men and women in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corp who gave their all for their country in times of war and peace will take place. The services will be held on the south side of the Broad Street Bridge at 9:00 am.

The memorial service is provided by the Navy-Marine Post 276 and the Lejuene Chapter of the Marine Corp League. The Navy Sea Cadets will provide a color guard, the U.S. Marine Reserves will have a firing squad for a volley of shots as a salute, a bagpiper will play Amazing Grace, a Marine bugler will play taps, and a floral anchor will be lowered into the Scioto River as a tribute to the fallen Sailors and Marines.

The general public, all veteran of the military especially the Navy and Marine Corp are welcome to attend and take part in the memorial services.

During the Memorial Services east bound traffic across the Broad Street Bridge will be reduced to one lane. The services will last about half an hour.

On Wednesday May 18^th, 2011 the Annual Ride of Silence will be taking place in downtown Columbus and the short north area. The ride will be approximately 750 cyclist on bicycles riding to raise awareness of motorist sharing the road with cyclist, also to remember cyclist who have lost their lives while riding their bicycles.

RACE FOR THE CURE RUN & WALK

The 2011 Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure will take place Saturday (5/14) in Downtown Columbus. This race is to call attention to and raise funds for breast cancer research. The event is expected to have a crowd of approximately 52,000 people taking part in different runs and walks. This large event will have a significant impact on motorists and pedestrians in the area.

Friday May 13^th, at 6:00 pm till Saturday May 15^th, approximately 3:oo pm

Broad Street will close between High and Third streets

Saturday May 14^th, at 6:00 am the following will close for the formation area:

Front Street will be closed between Gay and Town streets

Broad Street between High and Civic Center .

Participants should try to arrive early and expect delays. Roads along the race route will begin closing at approximately 8:00 a.m.

On Saturday May 7^th the Capital City Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5-K runs will be taking place. They will start on Spring Street in the area of Neil Ave. Both runs will start at the same time 8:00 am. They will be using the below routes. The Half Marathon will be going through the Ohio State University area, Italian Village, Short North, Columbus State Community College, Discovery District, German Village, Downtown and the Arena District.

The formation area will be on Spring Street from Marconi west to Neil for the setup of the formation area. This area will close on Friday night May 6th at approximately 11:30 pm. For the finish line Nationwide Blvd. will close on May 6^th, at approximately 11:30 pm also.

There is expected to be approximately 10,000 runners / walkers between these 3 running events.

General Information

Motorist are advised to avoid the area of the Capital City Half Marathon and Quarter Marathon unless they have a need to be in the area. They should expect congestion and delays in the area of the event.

Motorist desiring to go east, west, north or south through the downtown or areas where the Half Marathon and Quarter Marathon routes are located are advised to use the inter-state system. That being I-70, I-71, I-670 and State Route 315.

There will be special duty Columbus Police Officers and Franklin County Deputy Sheriffs directing traffic along both of the routes.

OHIO FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE

MEMORIAL MOTORCADE

On Thursday May 5^th, 2011 the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police will be sponsoring a Police Officers Memorial Motorcade from their downtown Columbus office located at 222 E. Town Street to the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy located in London Ohio.

This Memorial Motorcade is to honor all of the fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty in the State of Ohio. There will be marked cruisers, motorcycles and unmarked police vehicles from several different law enforcement agencies in the State of Ohio taking part. There is expected to be approximately 150 or more law enforcement vehicles.

They will form on Town Street in the area of 222 E. Town starting about 8:30 am. The Memorial Motorcade will start at approximately 10:00 am.

The route in the City of Columbus is:

West on Town to Fourth

North on Fourth to Broad

West on Broad to High

South on High to Mound

West on Mound to entrance to I-70 west

I-70 west to the London Ohio exit

Once the motorcade arrives the officers will be taking part in the annual Peace Officer Memorial services held at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy.

While in Columbus the Memorial Motorcade will be escorted by Columbus Division of Police Motorcycles and Freeway Units.

Motorist might experience only a few moments delay as the Memorial Motorcade passes their location.

NATIONAL ROAD 200TH YEAR CELEBRATION

NATIONAL ROAD 200^th YEAR CELEBRATION/PARADE

On the Columbus section of the National Road Celebration:

To celebrate the 200^th year of the National Road also known as the Cumberland Trail, on May 1^st 2011 several Model T’s and Model A’s and other vintage cars will start in Vandalia, Illinois and travel to Cumberland, Maryland using the old National Road. This is the start of a six state celebration. Cumberland, Maryland is where the National Road construction began and Vandalia, Illinois is where it ended.

On Wednesday May 4^th, the Columbus part of the parade/celebration will take place. The parade will form in the Franklinton area on the west side at old mile marker number 260 near Tommy’s Diner located at 914 W. Broad Street. Here the vintage cars will be joined by a horse drawn carriage and the Columbus Police Mounted Unit.

At 10 am The Parade/Celebration will start from 914 W. Broad, the route is below:

They will travel East on Broad Street to High Street

South on High Street to Main Street

East on Main Street to 1059 E. Main

They will stop for a Ribbon Cutting at 1059 E. Main Street where 1890’s era houses has been converted into “The Old National Road” Condominiums. Also a National Road commemorative park will be dedicated in the development.

The Columbus part of the parade will end at 1059 E. Main but the vintage cars will continue on their way to Cumberland, Maryland where they are expected to arrive Sunday May 8^th, 2011.

Background of National Road

The National Road was conceived by President George Washington as an all-weather road that would bridge the Allegheny Mountains. In 1806 a bill was signed into law by then President Thomas Jefferson and the National Road became the new nation’s first Federally-funded interstate highway. It served as the most significant predecessor to U.S. Route 40 being renamed Route 40 in 1926.

The road was started in Cumberland Maryland on May 7, 1811, and by 1838 it stretched to Vandalia, Illinois near St. Louis where it ended. The National Road runs 800 miles.

The National Road entered Ohio in 1825, reached Zanesville in 1830, and reached Columbus Ohio in 1833 entering on Friend Street (now called Main Street) and departed on Broad Street through Franklinton to the west.

To see a National Road (Cumberland Trail) mile marker, one is located on the north side of W. Broad by Veterans Memorial. This is mile marker number 258, all mile markers indicate the distance from Cumberland, Maryland to the point on the National Road where the marker is located.

On Thursday March 17^th, 2011 the annual St. Patrick’s Parade will take place in downtown Columbus. The parade will be divided into 2 different phases. They are listed below:

Phase I- Processional from Grant and Rich to the Holy Cross Church

The St. Patrick’s Day parade is a very large parade with three divisions and approximately 130 different units. The parade has floats, vehicles, several marching bands and many marching units.

Motorist should expect some traffic congestion in the downtown area of the parade. Special Duty Columbus Police Officers will be working traffic control for the parade.

Coalition for a Nonviolent Columbus

Neighborhood Grant Applications

Mayor Michael B. Coleman recently formed the Coalition for a Nonviolent Columbus, a grass-roots organization created to address the issue of neighborhood violence. To show his dedication to public safety and neighborhood improvement, Mayor Coleman dedicated more than $40,000 in the 2011 budget for neighborhood seed grants that will fund grass-roots activities to reduce violence.

The first grant filing period will take place March 1 through March 31. All completed grant application must be submitted to the City of Columbus, Department of Public Safety no later than 5:00 pm Thursday, March 31. The Coalition is made up of 25 voting members appointed by the mayor, representing neighborhood organizations, the faith-based community and non-profit service providers. There is also a variety supporting members to offer insight and provide resources to the voting membership.

March 3-6, 2011

The 23^rd Annual Arnold Classic & Arnold Sports Festival will be taking place March 3^rd – 6^th, 2011. They have included over 45 sports disciplines including 13 Olympic Sports. This year they have increased the venues from the Veterans Memorial, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the Nationwide Arena, the Ice House at NationwideArena, the LC (Lifestyle Communities Pavilion), and the Hyatt Regency (Ball Room).

and now this year have added the Arena Grand Theater, the Ohio State University French Field House and the Grandview Yard Skate Board facility.

The Arnold Sports Festival is the largest multi-sport event in the nation. The Festival welcomes 18,000 athletes annually who compete in 40 sports & events, including 13 Olympic sports. 170,000 fitness enthusiasts attend the Festival each year to experience thrilling moments of sports competition and fitness entertainment.

Police Traffic Concern

Traffic congestion in area of the venues on Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Motorist might want to avoid downtown in the area of the Nationwide Arena, Greater Columbus Convention Center and the Veterans Memorial. There could be traffic congestion at times in these areas during the Arnold Sports Festival.

5-K Runs

On Sunday morning there will be two 5-K runs in the area, see below for detailed information.

Change in Traffic Flow Pattern for Arnold Classic Event

Vine Street between High and Park will change from a two way operation to a one-way west bound only operation.

This will be in effect from Friday morning at 8:00 am till Sunday evening.

Daily from approximately 7:00 am until in the evening when competition is over.

Only on Thursday March 3^rd at Veterans Memorial 1:00 pm till approximately 10:00 pm. And at Convention Center from 7:00 pm till approximately 11:00 pm.

They will also have an Arnold Fitness EXPO in the Greater Columbus Convention Center with over 700 exhibit booths.

Hours of operation are: Friday 10:30 am – 6:00 pm

Saturday 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Sunday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Event Shuttle Service

Free Arnold Shuttle Bus service is available throughout the Festival beginning Friday March 4, 2011.

During the Weekend, The Arnold Classic and Sports Festival will be providing a free shuttle service. They lease 7 executive touring buses that travel between all of the downtown hotels, and their event venues. This transportation is FREE to all attendees.

The hours for the shuttle service operations are:

1. Friday March 5^th 7 am to 11 pm

2. Saturday March 6^th 7 am to 2:30 am Sunday morning

3. Sunday March 7^th 7 am to 5 pm

The shuttle service should allow people attending the Arnold Fitness Expo to leave their cars at their hotels and alleviate some of the parking congestion that always accompanies an event of this magnitude.

Theft Prevention

Persons attending the Arnold Sports Events should remove any valuable property like GPS’s, laptop computers, cameras, purses, etc from plain view in their vehicles in parking garages and parking lots surrounding the different venues. Place these items in the trunk of the vehicle or vehicle with no trunk in the back of the vehicle under something out of sight. This is to avoid thefts from vehicles.

5-K Runs

On Sunday morning there will be two separate 5-K runs. The first will be the Arnold 5-K Pump and Run this run will be followed by the Arnold 5-K. Both runs will follow the same route listed below:

Air Conditioner Thefts

There have been 49 incidents of thefts of Air Conditioners (A/C) involving damage to 136 units and a loss of thousands of dollars on 1 and 18 Pcts since November of last year. The thefts have been spurred by the price of copper which currently is at about $4.30/lb. Most victims are businesses with the thefts primarily occurring between 1AM-3Am.

Target hardening may help deter these thevies. Secure A/C units with fencing and locks if possible. Install motion sensor activated lights near the A/C units which will illuminate the area when approached after dark. Work with neighbors to watch the area for suspicious activity and call the police at 645-4545 for non-emergency situations.

The Columbus Division of Police will be conducting OVI enforcement operations throughout the New Years weekend. The Division will have additional traffic officers working overtime on Columbus freeways looking for impaired drivers, aggressive drivers and safety belt violators.

Officers from the Traffic Bureau will be increasing enforcement of drivers operating vehicles while intoxicated, using a grant funded by the Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Officers encourage individuals choosing to consume alcohol to consider these options:

·Designate a sober driver. This is someone who has not been drinking, NOT the person who has had the least amount to drink.
·If you plan on attending a holiday party and one drink isn’t enough, call a taxi for the ride home or stay the night.
·If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely. Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk.

The Columbus Division of Police asks citizens driving on Columbus’ roadways to assist in this enforcement by reporting any suspected impaired drivers. Drivers witnessing suspected impaired drivers should call the police non-emergency phone number at 614-645-4545. Drivers witnessing serious driving violations, such as driving the wrong way on the freeway, are asked to call 911 immediately with a description of the vehicle in question.

Armed Robbery

On 12-27-10 at 5:55 PM the suspect entered the Get-Go located at 3765 S. Hamilton Rd., brandished a handgun and demanded money. Fearing for their saftey the suspects demands were met and he fled the store. Shortly later at 6:19 PM the same suspect entered the Staples located at 2800 S. Hamilton Rd., brandished a handgun and demanded money. Fearing for their safety the suspects demands were met and he fled the store. The suspect is described as a M/W/40's, 6'0 to 6'3, 200 to 250 lbs. He had scruffy redish brown and gray facial hair and long hair (possibly a wig). He was wearing a brown cowboy style hat, black leather jacket and black pants.

Christ the King Catholic Church will be sponsoring a parade for Our Lady of Guadalupe that will take place on the south east side of Columbus on December 12^th, 2010. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of significant importance to the Mexican Catholics. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 & 12, 1531. She is credited with putting an end to human sacrifice of the Aztecs in Mexico.

The Mexican Catholic communities celebrate December 12^th, as Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, considered the “Patroness of Mexico and the Continental Americas”.

The local Mexican Catholic community on the south east side of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a parade/pilgrimage. The parade will form on December 12^th, 2010 at 11:00 am on the parking lot on south east corner of College and Livingston and will march to the Christ the King church located on Livingston Avenue. The parade/pilgrimage will start at 11:15 am and will proceed via the below route.

The parade should have a decorated truck and approximately 900 people marching with banners.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of significant importance to the Mexican Catholics. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 & 12, 1531. She is credited with putting an end to human sacrifice of the Aztecs in Mexico.

The Mexican Catholic communities celebrate December 12^th, as Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, considered the “Patroness of Mexico and the Continental Americas”.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PROCESSION – EAST

The annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Procession will take place on the east side of Columbus on December 12^th, 2010. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of significant importance to the Mexican Catholics. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 & 12, 1531. She is credited with putting an end to human sacrifice of the Aztecs in Mexico.

The Mexican Catholic communities celebrate December 12^th, as Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, considered the “Patroness of Mexico and the Continental Americas”.

The local Mexican Catholic community on the east side of Columbus to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe will have a procession to the St. Thomas the Apostle Church. The procession will form on December 12^th, 2010 at 10 am on Sixth Ave. at Sterling. The procession will start at 10:30 am and will proceed via the below route.

The procession is expected to have approximately 200 people marching with banners and 25 vehicles.

Procession route:

Westbound on Sixth Ave from Sterling

Crossing Cassidy Ave. to the St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

This is about a 6 block procession to the church.

There will be special duty Columbus Police Officers working traffic control for this event.

The City of Columbus, Department of Public Safety, License Section has issued a Roadway Solicitation Permit to the Ohio Newsboys Association (Charity Newsies) for their annual paper sale on Saturday December 11, 2010 between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. The Charity Newsies supply needy school children with several items of clothing for school.

JINGLE BELL 5-K RUN/WALK

The annual Jingle Bell Run sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation will be taking place this Saturday December 4^th, 2010. The event will be in the downtown and German Village area. This event will include a Kids Snow Flake Fun Run and a Jingle Bell 5-K Run and Walk.

Kids Snow Flake Run:

The formation will start at 9:30 am on Nationwide east of High Street near Max & Erma’s.

The fun run will start at 9:40 am.

Robbery Investigation

The victim was approaching the White Castle Restaurant, Greenlawn and S. High Street, in his car, from the alley west of the location. The suspect approached the passenger side and pounded on the passenger window, startling the victim who then slammed on his brakes. The suspect entered the car, displayed a knife and demanded the victim's wallet and cell phone. The victim complied. When the suspect looked inside the wallet, he saw there was no money and demanded the victim to drive him to the victim's residence. Once inside the residence, the victim was beaten, tied up, and placed in a closet. The residence was ransacked and the suspect fled in the victim's car. The victim was able to free himself and fled to a neighbor's residence and called the police. The victim was transported to Grant Hospital for his injuries.

The vehicle is a 2004 Gold Kia Rio with an Ohio temporary license plate U246779. The suspect is described as Male/black, 33-37 years old, clean shaven head, medium build, red shirt, and blue jeans. Report # 101016028.

The Columbus Division of Police will host a series of meetings to discuss recent changes within the Patrol Subdivisions and their impact on local neighborhoods. The meetings will also discuss how the new Community Response Teams and Truancy Patrols function. These meetings will be conducted on all five Patrol Zones within the city. Each meeting will be conducted by a Patrol Deputy Chief and will include the respective Zone Commanders as well as supervisors and Community Liaison Officers from each geographical area.

TURKEY TROT 5-MILER

The annual Turkey Trot 5-miler run and walk will again take place Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 2010. This event occurs in two different cities both Columbus and Upper Arlington along with the Ohio State University. The run will start and finish on Lane Ave. just west of North Star in Upper Arlington.

The Turkey Trout 5-miler is expected to have approximately 4,000 to 5,000 participants.

The runners will form at 8:45 am in the street and will start at 9:00 am.

5 Miler race course route:

Start on Lane west of North Star

East on Lane Ave. to Kenny Road,

South on Kenny to Woody Hayes

East on Woody Hayes to Coffey

Into Coffey Park and east on foot bridge

across Olentangy road and River to Tuttle (by 17^th Ave)

North on Tuttle to Neil (by the Blackwell)

North east on Neil to Lane

West on Lane to finish line west of North Star.

1 mile walk/run course route:

Start on Lane west of North Star

East on Lane Ave. in the west bound lanes to Kenny Road,

At Kenny Road they turn around and return on the east bound lanes to finish line.

Runner / walker patterns:

On Lane Ave the event will have the entire street between start/finish line east of North Star to Kenny Road.

On Kenny between Lane and Woody Hayes they will have the entire street.

On Woody Hayes between Kenny and Coffey they will have only the east bound, south lanes.

On Coffey between Woody Hayes and the bridge they will have the entire street.

On the bridge and bike path between Coffey and Tuttle they will have the entire path

On Tuttle between exit at 17^th and Neil (by the Blackwell) they have the entire street

On Neil between Tuttle and Lane they have the entire street.

On Lane between Neil and Kenny they have only the south side of the street

On Lane between Kenny and the finish line they will have all of the street

Traffic patterns:

Kenny road between Lane and Ackerman will have 1 way traffic in the north bound lanes. No south bound traffic.

South bound Kenny traffic at Ackerman must go east on Ackerman.

Kenny road between Kinnear and Woody Hayes will be closed to traffic.

Both north and south bound Rt. 315 exits to Lane Ave. will be closed.

South bound Olentangy at Lane must go east or west.

West bound Lane Ave. at Kenny Road must go north on Kenny

East bound Lane Ave. from Olentangy will be able to use one lane east bound to Neil.

Olentangy River Road between Lane and Kinnear will be closed.

North Star will be closed both north and south of Lane Ave.

East bound Lane Ave. will be close around Tremont Road

Special duty police officers from both Columbus Police, Upper Arlington Police and Ohio State University Police will be working traffic control for the event.

PILGRIM’S PROGRESS 4-MILER

The 4^th annual Pilgrim’s Progress 4-miler run will take place on Thanksgiving Day November 25^th, 2010. This event will take place at the Polaris Fashion Place and streets surrounding the mall.

Formation starts at 8:45 am on the concrete outdoor area between the Cheesecake Factory & Pub at the east end of the mall with the start of the race at 9:00 am. .

Route for 4-miler run/walk:

Exit formation area north toward mall loop

Right on mall loop

Left at first stop sign, to east on driveway toward Lyara Drive

Left on Lyara Drive to Gemini Place

Left on Gemini Place and follow to Polaris

Left on Polaris to Capella Drive

Follow Capelle Drive to drive west side of Dick’s

Right at drive front of Dick’s and circle Dick’s and other business.

After circling and back to Capelle

Then right on Capelle Drive front of the Theatre & Pub to the end of

the Drive

Then loop around the parking lot back to a left onto the Mall Loop drive north

bound

Left on Mall Loop drive following north, then east, then south, then west

back to Macy’s Drive.

Right on the driveway to Macy’s follow driveway

Right at Macy’s, then left follow drive closest to stores to Saks Fifth Ave. then

right around Saks Fifth Ave.

Left at the stop sign and head back to the main entrance to the Mall.

Follow the driveway closest to stores around the parking lot past Von Maur till

This run will mostly occur on the Polaris Fashion Mall property. On city streets only the curb lanes will be used motorist should experience little traffic problems.

Friendly Reminder to OSU Game Day Parking Violators: the Impound Lot and Parking Violations Bureau Have Moved!

On Monday, November 1, the City of Columbus opened the new Parking Violations Bureau and the Division of Police Impound Lot. The new facility is located at 2700 Impound Lot Road, just off Haul Road at State Route 104. The old facility at 400 West Whittier Street officially closed on Saturday, October 30, and all vehicles are currently being moved to the new facility.

The Parking Violations Bureau is based in the Department of Public Service.

To help direct motorists to the new location:

There is currently an electronic message board at the old Whittier Street facility notifying motorists the location has changed; the message board will remain at the Whittier Street location until after Thanksgiving Day

A large green-with-white lettering sign at the old Whittier Street location indicates the facility is closed and provides directions to the new Impound Lot Road facility

Signs and maps to the new Impound Lot Road facility are on the doors and windows of the old Whittier Street location

Signage has been placed along West Whittier Street, South High Street and Haul Road providing directions to the new location

The Parking Violations Bureau (PVB) is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closed on Sunday. However, PVB will provide special Sunday hours, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on November 14 and 28 for motorists whose cars are towed for illegal parking before and during the two remaining Ohio State University home football games against Penn State and Michigan.

The Parking Violations Bureau accepts only cash and credit cards (Visa, Discover, MasterCard only) for release of impounded vehicles. More information is available at

Aggravated Robbery

This morning at 7:55 a.m., an employee of Seibert Elementary School was robbed at gunpoint as she got out of her car parked at the rear of the school. The suspect took her blue '05 Saturn Vue (OH# CD59DU)and its contents and fled from the area. The victim believes the suspect fired two or three shots as he fled in her car. No injuries were reported. The suspect is described as a white male, early 20's, 5'5", 150 lbs, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white writing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Robbery Squad at 645-4665.

Even Ghosts and Goblins Need To Practice Safety!

A few tips to keep your trick-or-treaters safe!

As ghosts and goblins take to the sidewalks this Halloween, the Columbus Division of Police will provide a watchful eye to ensure their safety. Halloween is anticipated by children as a time for candy and fun with friends. However, for parents, Halloween can raise fears about child safety that can ruin the evening’s festivities. The following safety tips will help lessen those fears.

Costume Safety

* Make sure that costumes are flame-retardant so children aren’t in danger near candles or jack-o-lanterns and other fire hazards.

* Keep costumes short to prevent trips and falls.

* Encourage children to wear comfortable shoes.

* Use make-up instead of masks. Masks can be hot and uncomfortable and may obstruct a child’s vision.

* Make sure children wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes.

Halloween make-up is harmless for the most part. However, dressing up, coupled with the excitement of celebrating Halloween, can bring out aggressive behavior. Fake knives, swords, guns, etc. can accidentally hurt people. If these objects are a part of your child’s costume, make sure they are made of cardboard or other flexible material.

Unhaunting Your House and Neighborhood

* Welcome trick-or-treaters at home by turning on your exterior house lights.

* Remove objects from your yard that may present a hazard to visitors.

* Ask your neighborhood blockwatch or citizens’ group to patrol the neighborhood.

* Drive slowly! Children caught up in the excitement of the evening may run out into the street without warning.

* Report any suspicious or criminal activity to your local police or sheriff’s department.

Preparing Trick or Treaters

* Have an adult accompany younger children.

* Set a time limit for children to trick-or-treat. Together, map out a safe route so you know where they will be. Remind them not to take short cuts through backyards, alleys, or fields.

* Remind trick-or-treaters to never enter a stranger’s house or car.

If possible, have children trick-or-treat while it is still light out. If it is dark, make certain that each child or a few people in the group carry working flashlights.

Eating Treats

* Discourage children from eating their treats until they get home. One way to keep trick-or-treaters from digging in while they’re still out is to feed them a meal or substantial snack before they go out.

* Closely check all treats at home in a well-lit place.

* Before giving your child the okay to dig into their evening’s haul, take out all opened candies or other treats not in their original wrappers. Inspect all fruit and homemade goodies for anything suspicious.

* To ensure your child’s candy is safe, check with area hospitals to see if they offer candy x-raying services on Halloween.

The above are a few pointers to help ensure the biggest problem your child has from Halloween is an upset stomach from eating too much candy! Have a safe and enjoyable Halloween!

CHILLY BONES 5-K RUN

CHILLY BONES 5-K CLASSIC RACE

The annual “Chilly Bones” 5-K Classic race will take place on Saturday November 6, 2010. This run takes place in the northwest area of Columbus and Upper Arlington.

The race will start in Columbus on the Ohio Orthopedic C enter of Excellence (O.O.C.E.) parking lot on the northeast corner of Sawmill Road and Henderson Road.

The race/run route is:

- starts on the back parking lot (off of Henderson Road) of the O.O.C.E. at 4605 Sawmill Road.

- exits onto Henderson east bound in the east bound lanes only to Chevy Chase.

- South on Chevy Chase, which turns into Stonehaven Drive to Sandover.

- At Stonehaven Drive and Sandover the runners will turn around and return on the same course back to the finish line/start line.

Race will form at 9:45 am

Race will start at 10:00 am

Special duty officers from both Columbus and Upper Arlington will be working traffic control for this event.

VETERANS PARADE

VETERANS DAY PARADE

The annual Columbus Veterans Day Parade will take place this year on Friday November 5^th, 2010. This parade is to honor our Veterans of all conflicts from the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard.

The parade will start with a Military Fly over at noon. They will have several different military units marching, military vehicles, and bands. Joining them to celebrate will be some high school bands and marching units.

The formation will be on Nationwide Blvd. between Neil and High starting at 9:30 am. The parade will start at 12 Noon at Nationwide Blvd and High, going south on High to W. Broad, west on Broad to the entrance to the Franklin County Veterans Memorial and the disbanding are.

The official reviewing stand will be located in front of City Hall.

Traffic detours

South bound traffic on High street will be detoured east on Nationwide Blvd.

North bound traffic on High street will be detoured east at State Street.

East bound traffic on Broad street will be detoured south at Third

West bound traffic on Broad street will be detoured south at Starling

COTA buses will be using Third and Fourth street in place of High for the parade.

Motorist and pedestrians in the downtown area of Columbus may experience some delays.

Special duty Columbus Police Officers will be working traffic control for this parade.

Lights for Life

A Campaign to Keep the Teen Drivers of Ohio Safe. For over 25 years, Students Against Destructive Decisions (origionally Students Against Driving Drunk) has worked to educate teens in making good choices.

THE PROBLEM

The Cell Phone. The CD Player. The Cup of Coffee. Each day millions of drivers that the road and are forced to deal with an array of distractions. Some teens throw caution to the wind as they drive recklessly or without a seat-belt. It's no suprise that traffic accidents are the number one killer of teens with over 5,000 killed each year. SADD says enough is enough.

THE SOLUTION

Ohio SADD is excited to sponsor Lights for Life. This event asks drivers to drive with their vehicle's headlights illuminated on Friday, 12/10/2010 as they travel on the roadways of Ohio. This simple turn of a switch will draw attention to the serious issue that each teen faces as they get behind the wheel.

DEAD CELEBRITY RUN

Dead Celebrity 3 Miler Run

The annual Dead Celebrity Run will take place on Friday, October 29, 2010. This year the event has moved from the Brewery district to the Arena district. The runners/walkers will form on Nationwide Plaza near the Arena at Front Street at 7:45pm and the run will start at 8:00pm.

The Dead Celebrity run is where runners and walkers are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite dead celebrity. There are normally many who dress as Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon, and other celebrities who are no longer living.

The Run/Walk Route is below

The formation area will be on the Nationwide Plaza north west corner or Nationwide and Front.

Run will start on Front/Park north of Nationwide

North on the west side of Front/Park to Goodale

West on Goodale to Michigan

North on Michigan to First Ave

West on First to Perry and turnaround returning on the same course back to

the Nationwide Plaza and Finish Line.

Note:

When the runners are on Front/Park they will be using only the south bound lanes. The north bound lanes will remain open for traffic.

When the runners are on Goodale between Dennison and the on ramp west of Neil from Goodale to I-670 west bound they will be on the north half of the street, traffic will be on the south half of the street. All other areas on Goodale the runners will have the whole street.

The runners will have all of the street on both Michigan and First.

There will be special duty Columbus Police officers working traffic control for the event.

Motorist might experience some minor traffic congestion in the area of the 3 miler run.

HIGHBALL HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL

The 3^rd annual High Ball Halloween Festival, sponsored by the Short North Business Association will be taking place Saturday October 30, 2010. The street closure for the event will start on October 30^th, at 6 am closing North High Street between Fifth Ave. and First Ave. Following tear down and cleanup the street will be reopened prior to 6 am Sunday morning October 31^st. 2010.

The Halloween Festival will take place on High Street between Fourth Ave. and Second Ave. starting at 3 pm on October 30^th, and ending at Midnight. This event is a cross between Carnival and Mardi Gras with Halloween added in along with the Short North artistic spirit. This year they will transform the street into a New York style club scene.

A kid’s zone will be in the area of High and 3^rd Ave. a Bounce House, Jeni’s Ice Cream and the Shazzbots Kids Band. The first event at 4 pm is a Mini-Masques Children’s Costume Contest, followed at 5:00 pm by a Dogtober Howloween procession where you can disguise your dog and walk them down High Street, then at 8 pm a Costume Fashion Showdown, and at 9:30 pm the High Ball Costume Contest. There will also be DJ’s providing music.

COTA bus reroutes for lines 2, 5 & 8 are:

- Southbound on the north side will be east on 5^th Ave to Summit and then south to 2^nd Ave. to High and return to original route.

- Northbound on the south side will be east on 1^st Ave to Fourth then north to Fifth and return to original route.

There will be special duty Columbus Police Officers working this event and providing traffic control on High Street.

The annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer March will take place on Sunday, October 24, 2010. The event will form on Washington Blvd. in front of C.O.S.I. at 9:00am and will start at 10:00am. They are expecting approximately 4,000 plus participants.

The annual Ohio State University Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, October 22, 2010. The parade will form on the East side of The Ohio Stadium at 5:00pm and will start at 6:00pm. There is expected to be 100 entries which include people, autos, floats, bands etc.

Notice to all alarm users in the City of Columbus from the License Section:

1) All users of alarm systems, either police, fire, or both that lie within the jurisdiction of the City of Columbus, Divisions of Fire or Police, are required to obtain a permit before using the alarm system. This includes alarm systems installed by the user and which may or may not be monitored.

2) Use of any alarm system while it is not properly registered is a minor misdemeanor and may result in a required court appearance.

3) A separate permit is not required for users having both a police and fire alarm system.

4) The license fee is a total cost of thirty-five dollars ($35.00).

5) Upon receipt of any false alarm report, the alarm user may appeal such false alarm by submitting a written explanation as to the actual cause of the alarm within fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of the false alarm by mailing it to the below listed address or by faxing it to the below-listed fax number.

31 ST COLUMBUS MARATHON

The 31^ST annual Columbus Marathon will be taking place early Sunday morning October 17^th, 2010 in several areas of the community, Downtown, Bexley, Old Town east, German Village, Brewery District, Short North, Campus area, Ohio State University, Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights, Victorian Village and the Arena District. The race will start at 7:28 am and end at 3:00 pm.

Below is information on what streets are involved along the Marathon route. A time chart is also below with the times for the first wheelchair, first runner and last runner at the different mile markers.

Motorist should expect some delays in the areas where the Columbus Marathon is occurring. Recommend not trying to cross the Marathon course due to the volume of runners.

Runners expected are:

Full Marathon 5,000 runners,

Half Marathon 10,000 runners

This is a total of 15,000 runners for these two events.

In Columbus

The Marathon will use all of Broad Street from the start line at 3rd Street east to Nelson Road.

In Bexley

On Broad Street between Nelson and Parkview, the runners will have the entire street as they cross over to go north on Parkview to Maryland. East on Maryland to Drexel. South on Drexel to Main. While the Marathon runners are in Bexley, they will have all of the streets until they enter Main Street. On Main between Drexel and Alum Creek they will have only the westbound lanes.

In Columbus

On Main between Alum Creek and Nelson the runners will have only the westbound lanes. The runners will have all of Nelson to Franklin Park South, and all of Franklin Park West to Broad. On Broad they will have the south lanes (east bound) as far west to Monroe. On Monroe they will have all of the street to Bryden. On Bryden/Town they will have all of the street to Third. On Third Street between Town and I-70 the runners will have the east half of the street and vehicle traffic will use the west side. When the runners reach I-70 they will cross to the westside of Third at the bridge over I-70 into German Village.

In German Village, the runners will have all of Third between Livingston and Schiller Park and the entire street around Schiller Park to High Street. On High Street between Deshler and Long Street the runners will remain in the northbound lanes on the eastside of the street. On High Street between Long and Spring they will be switching sides of the street running in the southbound lanes on the westside of the street. On High between Spring and Chittenden they will be running in the southbound lanes only.

On Chittenden between High and Indianola they will have all of the street, on Indianola between Chittenden and E. 15^th they will have all of the street. On E. 15^th between Indianola and High they will have all of the street. On High between 15^th and 12^th they will have all of the street to 12^th, Ave.

On Ohio State University Campus

On 12^th between High and College they will have all of the street. On College between 12^th and 17^th they will have all of the street. On 17^th between College and Tuttle they will have all of the street. They then run around the south and part of the west side of the stadium to Cannon Drive. On Cannon Drive between the exit from Stadium lot to John Herrick they will have all of the street. On John Herrick between Cannon and Olentangy they will have the north half of the street. They will follow John Herrick between Olentangy and Woody Hayes and have all of the street. On Woody Hayes they will have the south half of the street between John Herrick and the entrance to the Carmack parking lots. On the parking lot they will be inside the coned off area.

In Columbus

On Kinnear between the exit from the parking lot and North Star they will have all of the street.

In Arlington

They will have all of the streets on. North Star, Berkshire, Andover, Stanford, North Star again.

In Columbus

On King Ave between North Star and Grandview they will have all of the street. On Grandview between King and 5^th Ave. they will have all of the street. On Grandview between 5^th ave and First they will have the east side of the street (north bound lanes)

In Grandview

They will have the east side of Grandview Ave., the other streets they will have all of them. That is West First, Burrell, Edgehill.

In Columbus

On Edgehill between 3^rd and 5^th they will have all of the street. On 5^th Ave between Edgehill and Neil they will have all of the street except for one west bound lane. On Neil Avenue between W 5^th and Hubbard the runners will have one-half of the street running in the southbound lanes and vehicle traffic will be in the northbound lanes. On Neil ave between Hubbard and Buttles the runners will have all of the street they will be switching sides of the street.The runners will have all of the street on Buttles between Neil and Park, on Park and Front between Buttles and Nationwide. When the runners turn onto Nationwide and the finish line location, they will have the entire street.

The Columbus Italian Parade, sponsored by the Columbus Piave Club will be taking place on Sunday October 10^th, 2010. The parade is part of the Italian Festival that will be taking place at the Saint John the Baptist Italian Catholic Church on Hamlet Street.

The parade will be forming on Goodale between Dennison and High starting at 1:15 pm. At 2:00 pm the parade will start. The route is below:

Critical Hit Skip Accident

Critical Hit-Skip Pedestrian Accident

On September 9^th, 2010 at approximately 2:28 am on the near east side of Columbus a pedestrian Mr. Ralph Calloway 51 years of age was in the crosswalk on the south side of E. Main crossing Parsons Ave. When he was struck by an unknown vehicle which fled the scene. As a result of this accident he was transported by Columbus Fire Medics in life threatening condition to Grant Hospital.

Mr. Calloway remains in critical condition at Grant Hospital.

With the start of a new school year, the Columbus Division of Police has begun strict enforcement of the posted speed limits in school zones. Officers will patrol school zones for speeders and aggressive drivers during the morning and afternoon hours when the 20 mph speed limit is in effect. Last year, officers wrote 6,788 citations in school zones.

It is important for drivers in or near school zones to be especially sensitive to traffic laws and stay alert for the presence of children. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic are usually heavy in the vicinity of school zones. Drivers should be watching for children crossing the street and walking along the roadway. Young children are vulnerable due to their limited sight distance as well as being inexperienced crossing roadways.

Tips for dropping off students and driving through school zones:

· Refrain from using cell phones or checking e-mail.

· Watch for children crossing the road as they may be easily blocked from your view due to their height.

· Plan ahead. If you know you will be traveling through a school zone during your commute, allow for extra time incase you encounter heavy traffic and school bus drop off points.

· If you are dropping your child off at school, have your child exit the vehicle on the curb side only.

· Parents are encouraged to discuss the rules for crossing the roadway with their children. If possible, take your child to the drop-off area and practice crossing at an off-peak time. Have your child wear his/her backpack and walk him/her through what to look for, what to do and what not to do.

· If crossing guards are utilized, explain their purpose and how your child must wait for approval to cross. If possible, have younger children practice roadway crossing with you since they learn better by performing an action instead of having an action described to them. Familiarity and repetition are the best guidelines for ensuring child safety.

Drivers are also reminded to familiarize themselves with the laws applicable to school buses:

· As a general rule, drivers approaching a school bus with flashing lights activated may NOT pass while the bus is picking up or dropping off students. Traffic laws vary depending on the number of lanes of the roadway.

· Drivers must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus when the flashing lights are activated while picking up and/or letting students off the bus.

· Those violating these laws will face a mandatory court appearance, suspension of their driver’s license and may be fined up to $500.

Let’s work together to keep our children safe. Remember – slow down and be watchful of children making their way to and from school.

The 3^rd annual Spirit of Columbus Half Marathon will take place on Sunday August 29^th, 2010 . The race will be going through several different police jurisdictions and will involve the following law enforcement agencies.

The runners on Rt. 33 will be using the south lanes of the roadway until they enter Griggs Park. When they exit Griggs Park they will be using only the right lane of the south bound lanes till they reach Hocking. From Hocking to Neil they will have all of the lanes.

Rt. 33 / Long street will be closed to vehicle traffic starting at 5 am Sunday August 29^th, 2010. Traffic will be rerouted north on Hocking to east on Nationwide Blvd. Spring street traffic west bound will remain open.

Motorist should expect some delays and re-routes on Route 33 between Hayden Run and Lane Road.

Special Duty Officers from several different agencies will be directing traffic on the Half Marathon course.

AMERICAN HEART WALK

American Heart Walk

The annual American Heart Walk will be taking place this coming Saturday August 28^th, 2010. A few thousand people will be taking part in this walk to benefit the American Heart Association. The walk will start in the Arena District and go north into the Victorian Village and Short North Area, coming back into the Arena District and ending at the Huntington Park Stadium.

Prior to the start of the walk several groups will be having their photograph taken inside the Hunting Park Stadium.

The Division of Police is now accepting applications for the next Citizen Police Academy, scheduled to begin September 13, 2010. The application deadline is August 30, 2010.

The Citizen Police Academy is a look into the values, philosophy, and operation of the Columbus Division of Police. Designed for residents of Columbus, the Academy educates citizens about the "how's and why's" of the Division, and the citizen's role in the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. Students are expected to share this realistic view of the Division with other citizens to improve the efficiency of law enforcement and order maintenance in their neighborhoods through shared responsibilities and resources.

The purpose of the Columbus Division of Police Citizen Police Academy is to provide information to the citizens who attend, so they may make informed judgments about the Columbus Division of Police, and police activity. Understanding can dispel suspicions and misconceptions, and increase police/community rapport through this educational process. The Division, in turn, becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community through input from the students. What topics are covered?

A wide variety of topics are covered in the Citizen Police Academy. Citizens examine training and related issues. The application of the Community - Oriented Policing philosophy will be discussed. The topics will address both parts of the Division -- those which are seen by the public, and those areas seldom seen.

When does the Academy meet?

The Citizen Police Academy meets one day a week for nine weeks. Any student who misses more than two meetings will not be able to graduate. Once the applications are closed for a particular class (August 30), the selections will be made by the Academy staff, with the final approval by the Chief of Police.

The Merrill Lynch 5K Bull Run will take place Saturday August 7^th 2010. In the Arena district of Columbus.

The 5K run will form at 8:45 am on Nationwide and McConnell

The run will start at 9:00 am.

Columbus "National Night Out" is being conducted Tuesday, August 3, 2010, throughout the city. National Night Out is a series of cookouts, ice cream socials, flashlight walks, dog walks, and block parties held throughout the city of Columbus and the nation. The events are conducted by Block Watch and Civic Associations. National Night Out is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and send a message to criminals; letting them know neighborhoods across Columbus are organized and fighting back against crime.

Mayor Coleman, Columbus Chief of Police Walter Distelzweig, Public Safety Director Mitchell Brown, Executive Staff, Patrol Commanders, Police and Fire personnel are all invited to join in this community celebration and make even more successful than it has been in the past in our battle against crime. This year, this summer, is a stark example to the importance of our standing together with members of the community, businesses, churches, and all city branches in the fight against crime. So please join us at the various National Night Out events being held throughout the city, Tuesday, August 3, 2010, from 6pm -9pm at most events.

Attached is a list of event locations, feel free to stop by and enjoy a hotdog, hamberger, bowl of ice cream, or just to chat. This is a great opportunity to meet members of the community and for them to meet you.

The Division’s crime mapping site on Crime Reports.com has been updated with our new zone, precinct, and district maps as per our recent Patrol reorganization project. This site allows citizens to view crime maps in their neighborhood or by zone, precinct, or cruiser district. Select “Area” from the tool bar. Users can also filter by crime type, date of occurrence, distance, and view registered sex offenders. Citizens can view crime maps online 24/7 and sign up to receive email alerts when new crimes are posted in their neighborhood.

PRIDE PARADE AND FESTIVAL

The 2010 Pride Parade and Festival sponsored by the Stonewall Union will take place this weekend with the Pride Festival starting on Friday June 18^th, in the Goodale Park area and the Pride Parade on Saturday June 19^th, in the downtown and short north areas.

The following closures for the Pride Festival are:

Starting Thursday June 17, at 6:00 pm till Saturday June 19^th, at 11:59 pm

1) Park Street from Buttles to Spruce

2) Goodale Blvd from High to Denninson

For the 2010 Pride Parade the following closures will be in effect.

Columbus Police to Increase Traffic Enforcement in Construction Zones

The Columbus Police Traffic Bureau will increase enforcement in designated work zones throughout the city. The increased enforcement is an effort to improve motorist, worker and pedestrian safety in roadway work zones.

Beginning June 14, 2010, motorists will see major road construction on State Route 315 between Interstate 670 and North Broadway, resulting in reduced lanes of travel for northbound and southbound vehicles.

Motorists should expect delays due to the high volume of traffic and the reduced speed limits in this area. Motorists are reminded that reduced speed limits are enforced even when workers are not present and fines could be doubled. Last year, Columbus Police issued approximately 2848 citations in the 315 construction enforcement zone.

If drivers are involved in a crash in which there are no serious injuries and the vehicles are drivable, the vehicle should be moved out of the moving traffic lane and driven to the next available exit prior to calling police.

Work zones can be dangerous for both construction workers and motorists. They require extra caution on the part of drivers. It is important to remember that speed limits are posted during road construction to keep workers safe. Slow down when you enter a work zone and let workers do their job and stay safe.

The annual 2010 Park Street Festival that takes place in the Short North District, area of the North Market has increased one day this year to become a three day event. The event will have a stage for entertainment, along with carnival amusement games for persons of all ages. They will also have several different food vendors serving great food.

Reopening 8:00 am Sunday June 13^th, 2010

The oldest race in Columbus is the Columbus 10-K run. This will occur on Sunday morning June 6^th, 2010. The run will take place in the area of COSI, Franklinton, downtown Columbus, the short north and Victorian Village.

COLUMBUS ARTS FESTIVAL

The annual Columbus Arts Festival for 2010 will take place in the Discovery District on June 4, 5 & 6^th, 2010. The hours for the festival are Friday – Saturday 11:30 am till 10:00 pm and Sunday 11:30 am till 6:00 pm.

Festival goers can also enjoy several different types of foods and drinks from great restaurants and vendors. There is also children’s art activities and different stages of entertainment.

To allow the Columbus Arts Festival to take place in the Discovery District several streets will be closed. These streets and the times for closure are below:

2010 National Night Out

It’s time again to join your family, neighbors and the Columbus Division of Police for the 27^th Annual National Night Out ©. On Tuesday, August 3^rd, partner with us to, “Give Neighborhood Crime and Drugs a Going Away Party.” Communities across the city will hold cookouts, parties and flashlight walks to celebrate this important national event and strengthen police-community partnerships.

To demonstrate a commitment against crime and drugs, all citizens are asked to turn on their outside porch lights because “Lights on Means Lights Out for Crime.”

All block-watch and community groups are encouraged to coordinate activities in their neighborhoods. More information on National Night Out can be obtained from your local Community Liaison Officer (614-645-4610). Please complete the attached form to register your neighborhood’s event.

The National Night Out Kick-Off will be held on July 10^th, 2010 at Westgate Park from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. The photos attached are capsules that were found in one of the Federal Department of Defense Dependents Schools located in Okinawa, Japan. Paper was rolled into scrolls after being dipped in liquid Methamphetamine and then inserted into capsules to be taken orally. 11 Precinct Alert Burglaries and Thefts from Autos

Recently, there has been a significant increase in Residential / Business Burglaries and Thefts from Automobiles on 11 Precinct. 11 Precinct is located on the south side of Columbus (please see attachment for a detailed map).

Please remember to report suspicious persons and vehicles in your neighborhood by calling 645-4545 – you prevent one of your neighbors from becoming a victim of crime.

Aggravated Robbery / Shooting / Stolen Car

On April 12, 2010, at approximately 3:07 am, a 42 year old male was shot and robbed of his vehicle (at Kimball Place and Mooberry Street) by an unidentified male and female. The victim received a single gunshot wound to the face and was transported to Grant Hospital in critical condition.

The stolen vehicle is described as a 2000 dark blue Chevy Lumina displaying Ohio tag GDSGIRL.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is requested to contact the Columbus Police Robbery Squad at 645-4665. Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 645-TIPS(8477).

Burglaries in North Columbus

From 1-10-10 to 3-8-10 there have been a total of twenty (20) residential burglaries/attempted burglaries in a concentrated area of 2 Precinct in the north end of Columbus.

The boundaries of the affected area are:

North: Weldon Ave.

South: Hudson St.

East: Howey Rd.

West: Homecroft Dr.

· Entries are being made by forcing/smashing windows or kicking doors.

· The primary losses continue to be electronics such as video game systems, televisions, computer equipment, etc.

· The primary time of the burglaries is between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm, but they are not confined to these hours and have occurred during various times of the day.

· The busiest days are Mondays and Tuesdays closely followed by Fridays, but they have occurred on every day of the week.

Residents in this area are advised to pay close attention to suspicious persons or vehicles in their neighborhood and report these occurrences by calling 645-4545 – please provide as much information as possible.

The City of Columbus License Section would like to provide information for residents and visitors regarding proper licensing requirements for taxis that operate in the City of Columbus.

When using a taxi, look for the license sticker in the right rear of the front windshield
When you climb into the taxi, note the company name and cab number
Look for the driver’s name, taxi driver ID number, and his/her photograph
Tell the driver to use the taxi meter; they cannot charge more than what the meter reads at your destination
Ask for a receipt
If you have a problem, call the City of Columbus License Section at 614-645-8366 to file a complaint

Looking to Identify Robber

On 1/22/2010, at 5:50:00 PM the victim was exiting his garage at 2434 Dover Rd when he observed a black male walking across his driveway. The victim approached the suspect to inquire about his activities. At that time the suspect pointed a gun at the victim and forced him back into his house. The suspect took a laptop, cash, and the victim's 1995 Ford Escort, license# 049-XHL.

On 02-04-2010 the victim participated in a computer generated composite sketch of the suspect. The sketch is available from the Columbus Police Robbery Unit. The Columbus Police requests that any persons with information about the suspect please contact the Robbery Unit at 645-4665.

Hazardous Weather Reminders

The Columbus Division of Police would like to remind drivers of the following safety tips before traveling in hazardous weather.

Before You Go:

Wake up early when indications of bad weather are predicted.
Listen to the radio and television for updates on the weather, road and traffic conditions.
Advise someone of your travel plans so they know when to expect your return.
Do not leave your vehicle unattended while it is warming up. Thieves are always looking for an easy target, not to mention you could be issued a ticket.
Leave early and don’t rush. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
Think about alternate routes to avoid traffic problems.
Pack a blanket and extra clothes in case you become stranded.
Carry a cell phone and make sure it is charged.
Pack a shovel, sand or kitty litter to aid in getting out of snow drifts or ice patches.

Ensure Your Vehicle Is Safe to Drive:

Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly and make sure your windshield is clear of frost and snow.
Travel with at least a half of a tank of gas in case you become stranded or stuck in traffic.
Make sure your tires have adequate tread to drive through heavy snow and ice.
Check your windshield washer fluid levels and carry extra in your vehicle.
Have a qualified mechanic check your brakes and exhaust system.
Make sure head lights, tail lights and turn signals work so other drivers can see you.

While You Are Out:

Allow for extra stopping distance between you and other vehicles.
Don’t make sudden stops or erratic turns.
If you become involved in an accident check for injuries. Call medical personnel and the police if anyone is injured.
If there are no injuries and the vehicles can be safely driven from the roadway, move to a safe area, off of the traveled part of the roadway, and call police. (Columbus Police 614-645-4545)
Exchange information with the other driver and file a police report as soon as practical if accident response restrictions are in place.

Pedestrians:

Avoid walking in the street.
Wear reflective tape or clothing so approaching vehicles can see you from a distance.
Cross the roadway at marked crosswalks and intersections.

Snow Emergency Definitions:

Level 1 Snow Emergency:

Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are also icy, drive carefully.

Level 2 Snow Emergency:

Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work.

Level 3 Snow Emergency:

All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roadways may subject themselves to arrest.
