ELDERLY SCAMS on January 25th & 31st, 2012

Sterling Heights Police are investigating two cases of theft in which elderly residents were victims. The first incident occurred on January 25th at a home on Brockton Ave. The most recent incident occurred on January 31st at a home on Village Drive. In both incidents, the suspects contacted the victims and acted as if they knew them, calling them by name.

In the incident on Brockton Ave., the male suspect claimed to be a former neighbor. Once inside the home, the suspect asked if he could bring his sister in. The female then asked for a glass of water, which the victim got for her, and the suspects left a short time later. When the victim's wife got out of the shower, he told her what had happened, at which time she began checking the house and discovered her wallet and some jewelry missing.

In the incident on Village Drive, the male victim answered the door and the male suspect claimed to have helped put a new roof on his home a couple of years ago. The victim allowed the suspect into the home, along with an adult female carrying a baby, and a juvenile male, approximately 12-13 years old. The female told the victim that the baby was sick and asked for a glass of water. While the homeowner was occupied in the kitchen with the female, the male suspect went into the bedroom where the victim’s wife was, and told her that her husband wanted her to give him fifty dollars, which she did. When the suspects left, it was discovered that additional money and jewelry were missing.

The victims are all between the ages of eighty-three and ninety. The description of the suspects is somewhat vague, however based on the other similarities, it is believed that the incidents are connected.
