Hampton Police Division Media Release-Fatality Investigation: Victoria Boulevard and Wakefield Avenue

On January 30, 2012 at 6:45 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received a wireless 911 call in reference to a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle on Victoria Boulevard near the intersection of Wakefield Avenue. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they located the pedestrian, an adult man, lying in the roadway. He was transported to Riverside Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 7:27 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was crossing Victoria Boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle, which was traveling eastbound on Victoria Boulevard. The vehicle, a 2008 Chevy Uplander belonging to Yellow Cab Company, remained at the scene.

The pedestrian has not been identified at this time. As further information becomes available, it will be released.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Two Suspects Arrested in Burglary Investigation: 1st Block of East Mercury Boulevard

On the evening of January 27, 2012, the Hampton Police Division arrested the two suspects responsible for the burglary that occurred in the first block of East Mercury Boulevard.

The investigation revealed that the St. Marks United Methodist Church was burglarized on January 26, 2012 at 3:00 a.m. The suspects made entry through an unlocked door. Once inside, they took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency, electronic devices and then fled the scene.

The suspects have been identified as Alec Grey Sassi, an 18-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 100 block of Woods Road, and a 17-year-old Hampton male juvenile. Both suspects have each been charged with 1 count of Breaking and Entering and 1 count of Grand Larceny.

Burglary Investigation: First Block of East Mercury Boulevard

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects responsible for a burglary that occurred in the first block of East Mercury Boulevard.

The investigation revealed that the St. Marks United Methodist Church was burglarized on January 26, 2012 at 3:00 a.m. It is unknown how the suspects made entry or fled from the church. However, once inside they took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and electronic devices.

The two suspects are described as both white males, between their late teens and early twenties, 5’07” to 5’11” with thin builds. One of the suspects has brown hair, goatee and was last seen wearing blue jeans, black sneakers, a brown and maroon plaid thermal jacket, black tee shirt, black gloves and sunglasses. The second suspect was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a white tee shirt underneath it, blue jeans with white on the pockets, black baseball cap with white writing on it and black tennis shoes.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Arrested for Attempted Robbery: 2600 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

On January 24, 2012, the Hampton Police Division arrested a suspect for attempting to rob a business in the 2600 block of West Mercury Boulevard.

At 10:38 p.m., a Hampton Police detective was in the 2600 block of West Mercury Boulevard when he observed a male acting suspiciously. The detective also observed that the suspect had his face concealed, was possibly carrying a firearm and was approaching the E-Z Pick Convenience Store. As the detective approached the suspect, he fled on foot. Additional officers responded to the area and were able to locate the suspect after a short foot pursuit. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the individual was armed with a firearm and was attempting to rob the business.

The suspect has been identified as Cory Jamal Walker, a 21-year-old Hampton man that resides in the first block of Mary Peake Boulevard. He was arrested and charged with one count of Attempted Robbery, one count of Use of Firearm during the Commission of a Felony and one count of Wearing a Mask in Public.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Arrested in Shooting Investigation: 300 Block of South Back River Road

The Hampton Police Division arrested two suspects involved in the shooting that occurred on January 24, 2012 in the 300 block of South Back River Road.

At 2:11 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received several e911 calls in reference to shots fired in the 300 block of South Back River Road. While officers were en route, the incident was updated to a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim, a 24-year-old Hampton man, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

The investigation revealed that a group of individuals got into a verbal argument in the parking lot of Sara’s Mart located in the 300 block of South Back River Road. During the argument, one of the suspects displayed a firearm and the groups exchanged gunfire. One of the suspects was shot in the lower back and later went to Riverside Hospital to seek treatment.

The two suspects that were arrested have been identified as Kemar Regalo White, a 24-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 300 block of Mary Street. The second suspect, which was shot during the incident, is Larry Devon Scott, a 22-year-old Hampton man that resides in the first block of Reynolds Drive. Both suspects were charged with one count of Aggravated Malicious Wounding and one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. They are both in custody in the Hampton City Jail.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Shooting Investigation: 300 Block of South Back River Road

On January 24, 2012, at 2:11 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received several e911 calls in reference to shots fired in the 300 block of South Back River Road. While officers were en route, the incident was updated to a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located one adult male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of potentially life threatening injuries.

Shortly after this incident occurred, we received notification from a local area hospital that an adult male walked in suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower back. His injuries are considered non-life threatening at this time. The preliminary investigation has determined that this individual is involved in the shooting that occurred on South Back River Road.

The circumstances and motive surrounding this incident are currently under investigation. As further information becomes available it will be released.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Sought in Robbery from Business Investigation: 200 Block of South Mallory Street

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance with locating the suspects who are responsible for a robbery from business that occurred on January 23, 2012.

The investigation revealed that at 8:13 p.m., two suspects entered the Hardees restaurant located in the 200 block of South Mallory Street with their faces covered, displaying handguns and demanding money. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and fled the business on foot. The suspects were last seen running towards Downes Street.

The first suspect is described as a black male, 5’6” to 5’08”, 150 to 165 lbs., wearing a blue winter jacket with a hood, blue jeans, black shoes, black gloves and a scarf covering his face. The second suspect is described as a black male, 6’ to 6’02”, slim build, wearing a blue puffy knee length coat, black gloves and a black mask. Both suspects were armed with firearms.

Suspect Arrested in Robbery from Business Investigation: 1800 Block of Todds Lane

On January 22, 2012, the Hampton Police Division arrested the person responsible for a robbery from business that occurred on January 19, 2012.

The investigation revealed that at 7:47 p.m., the suspect was inside the Heaven & Earth store located in the 1800 block of Todds Lane when he demanded money from an employee while armed with a knife. The suspect received an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and then fled the business on foot.

The suspect has been identified as Alton Ray Warren, a 46-year-old homeless man. He was arrested and charged with one count of Robbery.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Arrested in Shooting Investigation: 200 Block of Kathann Drive

On January 19, 2012, the Hampton Police Division arrested the suspect responsible for a shooting that occurred on January 9, 2012.

On January 9, 2012 at 8:00 p.m., the Hampton Police Division received a complaint of shots fired in the 200 block of Kathann Drive. Shortly after officers arrived on scene, the victim, a 26-year-old Poquoson man, walked into Newport News Police Headquarters suffering from a single gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He has been released from the hospital.

The investigation has revealed the victim was shot by the suspect as he got into his vehicle. The suspect and victim are known to each other and had a previous altercation. The suspect, Brad Parker, a 24-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 1500 block of Wickham Avenue was arrested and charged with one count of Maiming, one count of Use of a Firearm, one count of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Suspect Arrested in Vandalism Investigation: South Wythe Section of the City

On January 18, 2012, the Hampton Police Division arrested the suspect responsible for numerous vandalisms that occurred in the South Wythe section of the City.

The investigation has revealed that during the late evening and early morning hours on January 13 and 14, 2012 a suspect vandalized 22 vehicles, a home and a church by spray painting graffiti onto them. Examples of the graffiti are “666”, “Friday the 13^th” and upside down crosses. On January 18, 2012, the suspect, a 16-year-old Hampton male juvenile, was identified and arrested. He has been charged with 18 counts of misdemeanor vandalism.

Violent Crime Reduced for Tenth Consecutive Year

The Hampton Police Division is pleased to report that the violent crime rate in the City of Hampton has gone done for the tenth consecutive year. The violent crime rate declined by 6% in 2011 as compared with 2010, as well as the overall crime rate which declined by 2.4%. The violent crime rates are comprised of Homicide, Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault, each of which saw a decrease in 2011. In fact, Robbery and Aggravated Assaults are at their lowest level in the last 12 years. Property crimes also saw a decrease in 2011 with a decline seen in Larcenies, Property Offenses and Motor Vehicle Theft, which declined for the fourth consecutive year by 17%.

These declines in crime were achieved in part by the hard work, dedication and teamwork of Hampton officers and the close relationship that we are fortunate to have with our community. In today’s tough economic times, many law enforcement agencies across the country are operating with reduced budgets. Hampton is no different, yet our services to our citizens have not suffered as a result. The demands on our officers have increased but through their professionalism and responsiveness, they were able to persevere and decrease crime. In 2011, calls for service increased 8% (175,554 calls) as compared to 2010 (163,165 calls).

In 2011, the Hampton Police Division took an aggressive stance towards making the City of Hampton’s roadways safer. The Division implemented a Traffic Unit to improve highway safety utilizing strict enforcement efforts. Since the unit’s inception, the number of traffic accidents within the City of Hampton has decreased by 2%, while enforcement efforts have increased with the issuance of summonses by 6% and DUI arrests by 29%.

The Hampton Police Division is proud of the efforts and achievements made by our officers and will continue to strive to make the Hampton community safer.

Hampton Police Division Media Release:Abduction and Robbery Investigation: First Block of Tupelo Circle

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects responsible for a robbery and abduction that occurred in the First Block of Tupelo Circle.

The investigation revealed that on January 10, 2012 at 9:00 a.m., two delivery drivers, both Norfolk men, ages 24 and 34, were making a delivery in the first block of Tupelo Circle. Two masked black male suspects approached them at gunpoint and forced them into the rear of the 24’ Sear’s delivery truck which is pictured below. The suspects traveled through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and abandoned the truck in the 1100 block of West Ocean View Avenue in Norfolk. The victims escaped from the rear of the truck and contacted police.

The victims reported that during the time the suspects drove from Hampton to Norfolk, the suspects stopped several different times and offloaded appliances at unknown locations. Detectives are requesting that anyone that may have witnessed these activities to contact the Hampton Police Division.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Third Suspect Identified in Shooting Investigation: 1900 Block of Cunningham Drive

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect that is wanted in connection with a maiming that occurred on December 27, 2011.

The investigation revealed that at 5:23 p.m., an altercation took place in the parking lot of Wal-Mart located in the 1900 block of Cunningham Drive, during which there was an exchange of gunfire. One of the individuals involved, a 28-year-old Hampton man, was shot multiple times. He remains hospitalized in good condition.

After publicizing a photograph of one of the suspects, which was taken from surveillance footage, the Hampton Police Division received a crime line tip identifying the suspect. On January 2, 2012 warrants were obtained for Ryan Christopher Fultz, a 30-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 900 block of Emma Kate Court, for one count of Maiming, one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Two additional suspects, David Lamar Andrews and Randell Lamont Woods, were previously arrested for this incident. Both suspects were arrested on December 28, 2011 during a tactical situation that took place at the Best Western located in the 1800 West Mercury Boulevard. They are currently in custody at the Hampton City Jail.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Barricaded Suspect in Custody: 1800 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

On December 28, 2011 at approximately 2:15 a.m., Hampton Police detectives received information that David Lamar Andrews, a 27-year-old Hampton man, had barricaded himself in a hotel room at the Best Western located in the 1800 block of West Mercury Boulevard. Andrews had active warrants on file for one count of Maiming, one count of Robbery, two counts of Use of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony and two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. These charges stemmed from two separate incidents that occurred in the City of Hampton earlier in the month.

The suspect and another individual, a 23-Hampton man, were inside in the hotel room. Andrews, who was believed to be armed with a firearm refused to come out. The SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams (CNT) were activated. Members of CNT made contact with the suspect and after three hours of negotiating his surrender Andrews and the other occupant of the room was taken into custody without incident. Both the suspect and occupant of the room were transported to Investigations to be interviewed.

The suspect, David Lamar Andrews, a 27-year-old Hampton man, will be served with the outstanding warrants after he is interviewed. Any additional charges against him for today’s incident will be determined through the course of the investigation.

It has been determined that Andrews and the other occupant in the room are known to each other and he was in the room voluntarily. No charges have been placed against this individual at this time.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Shooting Investigation: 1900 Block of Cunningham Drive

On December 27, 2011 at 5:23 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to shots fired in the parking lot of Wal-Mart located in the 1900 block of Cunningham Drive. Upon officers arrival they located evidence and witnesses to support that a shooting took place, but were unable to locate a victim.

At 6:15 p.m., a 28-year-old Hampton man was located in the 800 block of Skelton Way in Newport News suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that an altercation took place during which there was an exchange of gunfire and the suspects fled from the area in vehicles. Both of the vehicles involved have been located.

The investigation is ongoing and as further information becomes available, it will be released.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Fatal Crash Investigation: Magruder Boulevard and Hampton Roads Center Parkway

On December 21, 2011 at 5:22 a.m., the Hampton Police Division received an e911 call in reference to a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Magruder Boulevard at Hampton Roads Center Parkway. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of an Acura Integra was traveling southbound on Magruder Boulevard when the driver of a Chevy Silverado, traveling northbound, attempted to make a left turn onto Hampton Roads Center Parkway. The driver of the Chevy Silverado struck the Acura Integra in the intersection. The driver of the Acura was pronounced deceased at the scene by medics. He has been identified as William Bradley Hicks, a 22-year-old Yorktown man who resides in the 100 block of Taurus Court.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing and being conducted by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Crash Team. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the Hampton Police Division at 727-6111.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Suspect Arrested for Multiple Burglaries

On December 18, 2011, the Hampton Police Division arrested a suspect in connection with multiple burglaries that occurred in the city of Hampton.

The investigation revealed that the suspect broke into two residences located in the 1^st block of Phelps Circle on December 15, 2011. While inside the residences, the suspect stole various items of jewelry, electronic equipment, a bicycle and several firearms. Shortly after the burglaries occurred, the suspect pawned several items of jewelry at a local pawnshop.

The suspect has been identified as Michael Daniel Hughes, a 20-year-old Hampton man who resides in the 1800 block of Kensington Drive. He was arrested and charged with 2 counts of Burglary, 1 count of Grand Larceny and 1 count of Obtaining Money by False Pretenses. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton City Jail.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had in his possession three large bags filled with over 90 pieces of jewelry. Detectives are trying to identify the owners of these items. Hampton Police Division Media Release: Fifth Graduating Class for the Hampton Police Academy

The Hampton Police Division would like to extend an invitation to attend the commencement ceremonies for the fifth graduating class of the Hampton Police Academy on Friday, December 16, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the American Theatre located at 125 East Mellen Street. Eight new police officers will graduate and be sworn in as police officers during this ceremony.

These recruits have completed an extensive 24 week training academy where they received their instruction from certified Hampton Police instructors. This allows the recruits to receive their training from the people they will be working with and to receive training specific to the Hampton Police Division.

The graduation ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Ward, as well as Chief Chuck Jordan. The class leader will make comments for the graduating class.

Each new officer will have the special person of their choice pin their badge on their uniform after the badge is presented by Chief Jordan.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Robbery from Business Investigation: 5100 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance with indentifying the suspects responsible for a robbery from business that occurred on December 7, 2011.

The investigation revealed that at 9:02 p.m. two masked suspects entered the Advance Auto Parts located in the 5100 block of West Mercury Boulevard. Both suspects were armed with firearms and demanded money from the employees. The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and fled the business on foot towards Wickham Avenue.

Suspect #1 is described as black male, 5’10” to 6’00”, 130 lbs., wearing all black clothing, glasses, a black mask and black gloves. Suspect #2 is described as a black male, 5’07” to 5’08”, 140 to 145 lbs., wearing blue pants, grey hooded sweatshirt, light colored mask, black toboggan and black gloves.

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance with locating a suspect that is wanted in connection with a robbery from business that occurred on December 6, 2011.

The investigation revealed that at 9:35 p.m., three suspects entered the Buckroe Beach Market located in the 200 block of Buckroe Avenue. One of the suspects was armed with a firearm and demanded money from an employee and a patron. The suspects stole an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency along with a wallet belonging to the employee. The suspects fled the business on foot and were last seen running on Mallory Street towards East Pembroke Avenue.

Edward Donte Whitlow, a 21-year-old Newport News man that resides in the 4600 block of Madison Avenue was arrested on December 6, 2011. He was charged with three counts of Robbery, three counts of Use of a Firearm while in Commission of a Felony and one count of Abduction. He is currently in custody at the Hampton City Jail. Ricardo Lee Walker, a 31-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 100 block of Lancaster Terrace currently has warrants on file for three counts of Robbery, three counts of Use of a Firearm while in Commission of a Felony and one count of Abduction.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Arrested in Robbery Investigation: 400 Block of Cedar Drive

The Hampton Police Division has arrested the suspect responsible for a robbery that occurred in the 400 block of Cedar Drive.

On December 3, 2011, at 12:56 p.m., the Hampton Police Division responded to a robbery from person that occurred in the 400 block of Cedar Drive. Upon officers arrival they located the victim, an 86-year-old Hampton man, whom had been assaulted. He was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. The victim has been released from the hospital.

The investigation revealed that the suspect was assisting the victim with yard work. The victim allowed the suspect inside his home at which time the suspect assaulted the victim multiple times. The suspect took the victims wallet which contained credit cards and U.S. Currency and then fled the area on a bicycle.

On December 7, 2011, the Hampton Police Division received an anonymous tip via crime line that led detectives to identify the suspect. As a result a 17-year-old Hampton male juvenile has been arrested and charged with one count of Maiming and one count of Robbery.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Shooting Investigation: Oneda Drive and Old Buckroe Avenue

On December 6, 2011 at 12:47 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received a compliant of a shooting in the 1500 block of East Pembroke Avenue. Upon officers arrival they located a 24-year-old Hampton man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the arm. The individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed that the individual was near the intersection of Oneda Drive and Old Buckroe Avenue when he accidentally shot himself. After the shooting, the individual dropped the weapon and went back to his residence. Immediately after the shooting complaint was received, Phoebus High School was placed on lock down. The School Resource Officer observed a 16-year-old student in the area where the shooting took place. That student was detained and transported to school officials for truancy. During the investigation a firearm was located on the student and it was discovered that he found the firearm and picked it up.

Arrested as a result was Xavier Pierre Bell, a 24-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 1500 block of East Pembroke Avenue. He was charged with one count of Reckless Handling of a Firearm and released on summons. Additionally, the 16-year-old Hampton male juvenile was charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.

Neighborhood Watch Alert - Old Northampton Neighborhood

The Hampton Police Division urges the public to take necessary precautions and ensure that their house doors and windows are locked and secured at all times.

There have been multiple incidents of burglaries in the Old Northampton Neighborhood in the last six weeks. Incidents usually occurred Sunday through Tuesday. Entry was gained through an unlocked rear door or side window in four of the incidents and a rear door was forced in two of the incidents. Electronics, jewelry, and coins were targeted. A firearm was stolen in one incident.

As the Hampton Police Division pursues these cases, it requests your cooperation by following these guidelines:

Make all the members of your household aware of these incidents
Encourage household members and neighbors to be vigilant and attentive
Create an inventory of your valuables; be sure to include the make, model and serial number
Reinforce doors and windows; make sure that any automated doors, like garage doors, are functioning properly
Lock windows and secure doors before leaving your home

Hampton Roads Center Parkway & Coliseum Drive Closed for theColiseum Central Holiday Parade

Mercury Boulevard, will be closed. Citizens and visitors can continue to access businesses in the Coliseum Central area, but should be aware of the road closings and use alternate routes to travel to their destinations. On the evening of November 15, 2011, the Hampton Police Division arrested the suspect in connection with the Doolittle Road robbery investigation.

The investigation revealed that on November 14, 2011 at 9:31 p.m. in the 100 block of Doolittle Road, the suspect approached the first victim, a 33-year-old Hampton man, in the lobby of an apartment building. The suspect produced a firearm and demanded the victim’s property. The victim refused to give the suspect his property at which time the suspect fired several shots at the victim as he ran from the building. Once outside, the suspect approached a second victim, a 26-year-old Hampton female, in the parking lot, produced a firearm and demanded her property. The suspect took the victim’s backpack containing personal items and then fled the scene. Neither victim was injured in the incidents.

Derick Anthony Tucker, a 19-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 6000 block of Huntington Avenue, was arrested and charged with 1 count of Robbery, 1 count of Attempt Maiming, 1 count of Attempt Robbery, 3 counts of Use of a Firearm While in Commission of a Felony and 1 count of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling. He is currently in the custody of the Hampton City Jail.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Fatal Crash Investigation: Hampton Roads Center Parkway and Magurder Boulevard

On November 12, 2011 at 07:57 p.m., the Hampton Police Division received an e911 call regarding a single vehicle automobile crash on Hampton Roads Center Parkway near Magurder Boulevard. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene and located an adult female suffering from life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced deceased at the scene. She has been identified as Susan Watkins, a 50-year-old Hampton woman whom resides in the first block of North Lake Loop.

The vehicle, a 1993 Ford Explorer, was traveling westbound on Hampton Roads Center Parkway when it lost control near the intersection of Magruder Boulevard and overturned in the median causing the driver to be ejected from the vehicle. Alcohol was a contributing factor leading to the crash. The crash is being investigated by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Accident Team.

On November 11, 2011 at 8:31 p.m. Hampton Police Communications received a wireless e911 call in reference to a shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Lasalle Avenue. Upon officers arrival they discovered a 32-year-old Hampton man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He is currently in serious but stable condition.

The investigation revealed that the victim was approached by two suspects that displayed firearms. The suspects robbed the victim of U.S. currency and then shot him. The suspects were last seen fleeing the scene in a gold colored car.

One of the suspects has been identified as Arron Marques Cofield, a 21-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 5100 block of Goldsboro Drive. He was arrested on November 11, 2011and charged with 1 count of maiming, 1 count of Robbery, 2 counts of use of a firearm while in commission of a felony.

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance with identifying three suspects involved in a robbery from person that occurred on November 7, 2011.

The investigation revealed that at approximately 9:00 p.m., four victims were walking in the 1^st block of Hall Road when they were approached by an unknown suspect. The suspect displayed a handgun and demanded money from the victims. The suspect got an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency from the victims and then got into a dark colored 4-door vehicle that was parked on Hall Road. The vehicle was last driving on Hall Road towards Silver Isles Boulevard. The victims were not injured.

Suspect #1 is described as a black male, late teens to early twenties and 5’6”-5’9” tall. He was last seen wearing a dark colored parka coat with fur on the collar and dark jeans. He was armed with a handgun. There were two other suspects in the vehicle at the time of the robbery. Suspect #2 is described as a black male in his late teens to early twenties with a medium complexion, 5’6”-5’9” tall with a slim build. He was last seen wearing jeans, a black jacket with white stripes down the sleeves and a black hat with fur trim. Suspect #3 is described as a black female who is in her late teens to early twenties, 5’6”-5’9” with a medium complexion and cornrows. She was last seen wearing an orange jacket and jeans.

Hampton Police Division Media Release:Serious Crash Investigation: Magruder Boulevard and Floyd Thompson Drive

On November 6, 2011 at 12:41 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to a two vehicle automobile crash with injuries near the intersection of Magruder Boulevard and Floyd Thompson Drive.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2006 Pontiac G6 was traveling northbound on Magruder Boulevard when it came upon an obstacle in the roadway. As the driver swerved to avoid the obstacle it struck a 2005 Dodge Ram and a pedestrian that were in the median. The pedestrian, a 54-year-old Newport News woman, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with serious and possibly life threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The accident is being investigated by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Accident Team. More information will be released once it becomes available.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2000 Dodge Caravan was traveling east on West Pembroke Avenue and a1999 Chevy S10 was traveling west on West Pembroke Avenue when the two vehicles collided. A 2004 Ford Taurus was also struck during the crash. Two adult females, who were in the Caravan, and one adult male, who was in the S10, were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for injuries. The front seat passenger in the Caravan, Betty Fay Labaire, a 55-year-old Hampton woman who resides in the 600 block of Michigan Drive was pronounced deceased at the hospital on November 4, 2011 at 3:20 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. More information will be released once it becomes available.

There have been multiple incidents of larcenies from vehicles in the vicinity of King St. and Boeing Ave., over the past week. In most cases, the vehicles’ doors were unlocked and valuable items were left in plain sight, which made for an easy target.

The Hampton Police Division urges the public to lock their car doors and ensure that all windows are up tight.

As the Hampton Police Division pursues these cases, it requests your cooperation by following these guidelines:

Make all the members of your household aware of these incidents
Encourage household members and neighbors to be vigilant and attentive
Always lock all doors
Roll vehicle’s windows up tight
Park in heavily traveled and well-lit areas
Don’t leave valuables in sight.
Engrave an identifying number on a hidden place on the car and on any valuable components to help police identify any recovered property
Keep portable electronic devices such as GPS devices hidden and out of sight. If possible, take them out of your car and include the holder.
Don’t hide spare keys in your vehicle – they can be found.
Don’t think it cannot happen to you – act before, not after the crime

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Identified in Shooting Investigation: 400 Block of Buckroe Avenue

The Hampton Police Division has arrested the suspect that was responsible for a shooting that occurred in the 400 block of Buckroe Avenue.

On November 1, 2011 at 1:02 p.m. Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to a shooting that occurred in the 400 block of Buckroe Avenue. Upon officers arrival they discovered a 22-year-old Hampton man suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed that two men got into a verbal argument. During the argument one of the men displayed a firearm and shot the victim. Both the suspect and victim are known to one another.

The suspect has been identified as Ryan Koel Truitt-Green, a 23-year-old Hampton man that resides in the first block of Northcutt Drive. He was arrested and charged with 1 count of maiming, 1 count of use of a firearm while in commission of a felony and 1 count of possession of a stolen firearm.

National Emergency Test

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, FEMA, DHS and FCC will conduct the first national test of the Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS) test. This nationwide test will kick off at 2:00 p.m. (EST) and run concurrently across all time zones.

This system test is the first of its kind designed to broadcast a nationwide message to the American public. In the history of the country, nothing like it has been conducted on such a level. As you may be aware, there have been tests in the past, but not of this magnitude encompassing all regions of the Nation simultaneously. The three (3) minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV band stations exceeding the previous messages broadcast which were anywhere from a 30 second to 1 minute message.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Shooting Investigation: 400 Block of Michigan Drive

On October 26, 2011 at 12:10 a.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a shooting that had just occurred in the 400 block of Michigan Drive. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they located the victim, a 21-year-old Hampton man, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported by medics to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which are considered non-life threatening at this time.

The investigation revealed that the victim was walking on the sidewalk in the 400 block of Michigan Drive when he was approached by an unknown male. The suspect pointed a handgun at the victim, shot him in the face and then fled the scene. The suspect is described as a male (unknown race), 5’8”-5’10” tall and weighing 170-180 pounds. The suspect was last seen wearing all dark clothing to include a black hooded sweatshirt. He was armed with a handgun.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Arrested in Robbery Investigation: 2200 Block of Executive Drive

On October 25, 2011, The Hampton Police Division arrested a suspect that was responsible for a robbery that occurred in the 2200 block of Executive Drive.

On October 21, 2011 the Hampton Police Division responded to the First Stop located in the 2200 block of Executive Drive for a robbery from business. Upon arrival officers discovered that the suspect entered the business displaying a firearm and demanding money. The suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and utilized the hood to conceal his face. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and fled from the business.

The suspect has been identified as John Rayshawn Rivera, a 25-year-old Virginia Beach man whom resides in the 5500 block of Finespun Last. He was arrested and charged with 1 count of Robbery, 1 count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, 1 count of Wearing a Mask in Public and 1 count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: National Prescription Drug Take-Back Program

The Hampton Police Division will be participating in the National Drug Take-Back program that is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). On October 29, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of the Division will be staffing a collection point in the lobby of police headquarters located at 40 Lincoln Street. This will afford the citizens of Hampton the opportunity to properly dispose of any unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications. The service is free to the public and there will be no questions asked regarding any medication that is turned in.

The DEA recommends that you do not flush medications down the toilet, as there is the potential to contaminate the water supply. Also keeping unused or expired prescription medications in your home can be a potential safety hazard which could lead to an accidental poisoning, overdose and or/abuse.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Sought in Robbery Investigation: 100 Block of Newmarket Square

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance with locating the suspects involved in a robbery from business that occurred on October 21, 2011.

On October 21, 2011 at 7:22 a.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a robbery in progress occurring at the Food Lion located in the 100 block of Newmarket Square. Upon arrival officers discovered that an adult male had been shot in the leg. The victim, a vendor who was working in the store, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation has revealed that two suspects entered the business and identified themselves as F.B.I. agents. The suspects displayed firearms and demanded money. During the robbery, the suspects placed two devices, believed to be explosives, on two employees. A struggle ensued between the vendor and a suspect during which the vendor was shot and the suspect was stabbed with a knife in the upper torso. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and fled the business on foot towards Newmarket Drive. The Newport News Bomb Squad responded to the scene and determined that the devices were not explosive devices and removed them from the victims.

Suspect Descriptions:

Suspect #1: Black male in his late thirties, approximately 5’07” to 5’08, 190 lbs., short hair and a light complexion. He was last seen wearing a black overcoat, black fitted baseball hat, blue shirt with the letters “F.B.I.” in gold on the front, dark black sunglasses and an ear piece.

Suspect #2: Black male, 20-30-years-old, approximately 5’06”, 150 lbs. and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a black knit cap, dark blue wind breaker, blue shirt with the letters “F.B.I.” in gold on the front, dark blue pants, and dark sunglasses.

Shooting Investigation: First Block of Tradewinds Quay

On October 13, 2011 at approximately 7:15 p.m., unknown suspect(s) fired several rounds in the first block of Tradewinds Quay. Upon arrival, officers they discovered that an apartment building had been struck multiple times.

At approximately 10:48 p.m. that same night, unknown suspects fired several more shots striking a vehicle which was parked in the first block of Tradewinds Quay.

Although property was damaged, no one was injured during either incident. It is unknown if these two incidents are related and they remain under investigation.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Identified in Robbery Investigations: 2000 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a subject that is wanted for a robbery that occurred in the 2000 block of West Mercury Boulevard.

On September 18, 2011 at 10:29 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a robbery. Upon officer’s arrival, they discovered that the suspects approached an employee outside of CiCi’s Pizza, implied a weapon and demanded money. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and fled the scene.

On October 5, 2011 at 10:52 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a suspicious person whom was possibly armed and wearing a mask outside of CiCi’s Pizza. Upon officer’s arrival they discovered that as two employees were leaving the business they observed an individual armed with a firearm and wearing a mask. They quickly retreated back into the business and phoned for police. Officers that were in the area located the suspect near by and identified him as Joseph Gerard Thomas. Mr. Thomas was arrested and charged with one count of Attempt Robbery and one count of Wearing a Mask in Public.

The investigation led to three suspects being identified in the robbery that occurred on September 18, 2011. Bobby Orman English, a 21-year-old Newport News man whom resides in the 400 block of Riddick Road was arrested on October 10, 2011 and charged with one count of Robbery and one count of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery. Joseph Gerard Thomas, a 28-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 1500 block of Briarfield Road was arrested on October 5, 2011 and charged with one count of Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery and one count of Wearing a Mask in Public. Both suspects are currently in custody at the Hampton City Jail. The third suspect is Adarryll Autman Jennings, a 36-year-old Suffolk man whom resides in the 6400 block of Weaster Avenue. He currently has warrants on file for one count of Robbery, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery and one count of Wearing a Mask in Public.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Identified in Robbery Investigation: First Block of County Street

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a subject that is wanted for a robbery that occurred in the first block of County Street.

On October 13, 2011 at 8:11 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a robbery that had just occurred at the intersection of County Street and Mallory Street. The investigation revealed that the victim, an adult Hampton man, was stopped for a red light on his scooter when he was approached by four suspects. One of the suspects assaulted the victim causing him to fall off of his scooter at which time all four suspects began assaulting the victim. The suspects then took the victim’s scooter. The suspects were last seen pushing the scooter on Mallory Street towards Bainbridge Avenue.

Two of the suspects have been identified. Iman Markee Taliaferro, a 19-year-old Newport News man whom resides in the 2400 block of Tivoli Square was arrested and charged with 1 count of Carjacking. He is currently in custody at the Hampton City Jail. Kwame Akeem Taliaferro, a 22-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 1400 block of North Mallory Street currently has a warrant on file for one count of Carjacking.

The remaining two suspects have not been identified. The first suspect description is a light skinned black male, 15 to 16-years-old, approximately 5’10” with short dread locks. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and tan pants. The second suspect is described as a dark skinned black male, 16 to 19-years-old, approximately 6’01” with short hair. He was last seen wearing a dark blue shirt and blue jeans.

The scooter is described as a red and black 2010 Yamaha C 3 Scooter with a Superman gold and black reflector sticker displayed on all four sides.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Suspect Arrested for Unlawful Entry: 100 Block of Clifton Street

On October 8, 2011, Hampton Police arrested a suspect in connection with a burglary that occurred in the 100 block of Clifton Street.

On June 30, 2011, Hampton Police were notified of a burglary that occurred in the 100 block of Clifton Street. Unknown suspect(s) entered the residence and stole an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency. The investigation revealed that Rufus Thomas Langford, a 77-year-old Hampton man who resides in the 1400 block of W. Queen Street, entered the residence without permission. He has been charged with 1 count of Unlawful Entry and released on a summons. The residence belonged to William A. Cooper, the suspect involved in the police involved shooting that occurred on June 18, 2011. It was also the location where Langford held several gatherings on the property to protest police action. The investigation into the burglary is still ongoing.

Hampton Police Division Media Release-Update to Fatal Crash Investigation: W. Queen Street and Buckingham Drive

On September 29, 2011 at 10:29 p.m., the Hampton Police Division received an e911 call regarding a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle in the area of W. Queen Street and Buckingham Drive. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene and located the victim lying in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. The victim, Arthur Green, a 64-year-old Hampton man who resides in the 1500 block of W. Pembroke Avenue, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Through the investigation, it was discovered that the victim was struck by an unknown vehicle in the intersection of W. Queen Street and Buckingham Drive. That vehicle fled the scene. The victim was lying in the roadway when he was struck by a second vehicle, a 2001 Ford Expedition, which was traveling westbound on W. Queen Street. The second vehicle (2001 Ford Expedition) did stop and the driver was interviewed at the scene. The crash is still under investigation by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Accident Team.

The Fatal Accident Team would like to speak to the operator of a gold 4-door sedan that stopped to render assistance at the crash scene.

On Tuesday, October 4, 2011, the Hampton Police Division will celebrate the 28^th Annual National Night Out. This year’s National Night out was moved from August to October to coincide with Crime Prevention Month. This event is celebrated nationwide each year in an effort to heighten community awareness of crime prevention, create a positive police image while strengthening partnerships between neighborhoods and police and generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs.

People throughout the Nation will be turning on their porch lights to show their support of Neighborhood Watch and to celebrate National Night Out. Hampton Police Division Media Release: Arrest in Distribution of Marijuana Investigation:1800 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

The Hampton Police Division has arrested an individual for distribution of marijuana in the 1800 block of West Mercury Boulevard.

On September 29, 2011 at 10:44 a.m., the Hampton Police Division received a call from an employee at the Best Western located in the 1800 block of West Mercury Boulevard in reference to an odor of marijuana coming from one of their hotel rooms. Upon officers’ arrival, they discovered a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the hotel room. The officers contacted the Special Investigations Unit and a search warrant was conducted on the hotel room. Recovered during the search was thirty (30) pounds of marijuana, digital scales, packaging materials, cell phones and $5,483 in U.S. currency.

A search warrant was also conducted at the suspect’s home in the 1000 block of Jonquil Lane where an additional pound of marijuana was recovered as well as a firearm and $1000.00 in U.S. currency.

Arrested as a result was Isaac Leon Lipkins a 26-year-old Hampton man who resides in the 1000 block of Jonquil Lane. He was charged with one count of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, one count of Possession of a Firearm while in Possession of more than a Pound of Marijuana and one count of Conspiracy to Violate the Drug Control Act. He is currently in custody at the Hampton City Jail.

On September 29, 2011 at 10:29 p.m., the Hampton Police Division received an e911 call regarding a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle in the area of W. Queen Street and Buckingham Drive. Officers, along with members of the Hampton Fire and Rescue Division, responded to the scene and located the victim lying in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. The victim, an adult male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity is not known at this time.

The vehicle, a 2001 Ford Expedition, was traveling westbound on W. Queen Street when the driver struck the victim. At this time, it is unknown why the victim was in the roadway. The crash is being investigated by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Accident Team.

The Hampton Police Division was notified that one of our officers was selected as an award recipient for the 2011 Virginia CIT Officer of the Year. This award was presented at the CIT National Conference that was held this month in Virginia Beach.

The Hampton-Newport News Crisis Intervention Team or CIT began in 2008 and since its inception, over 368 law enforcement professionals from across the state have been trained utilizing this program. The goal of this program is to reduce unnecessary restraint and incarceration of people with mental illness and to provide individuals with appropriate treatment in the community. CIT officers receive comprehensive training on recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness. They are specially trained to recognize and de-escalate crises involving people with acute episodes of mental illness. The Hampton Police Division has 112 CIT officers.

Senor Police Officer Lewis Clements was awarded CIT Officer of the Year for his interaction with a suicidal subject in March of 2010. After responding to a complaint of a suicidal subject, SPO Clements encountered an individual armed with a firearm that was threatening suicide. Utilizing the CIT training that he had received in 2009, SPO Clements began speaking with the individual. While remaining calm, steady and controlled throughout this highly stressful incident SPO Clements began reassuring the subject by advising him of the various resources available throughout the community. SPO Clements was able to form a bond with the subject and eventually was able to convince the subject to put down the firearm and receive the appropriate medical care that he needed.

Hampton Police Divison Media Release: Driver Charged in Fatal Crash Investigation:1000 Block of West Mercury Boulevard

On September 24, 2011 at 8:00 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to a two vehicle automobile crash with injuries involving a Hampton Medic Unit at the intersection of West Mercury Boulevard and North Armistead Avenue.

The investigation revealed that a Hampton Medic Unit was traveling northbound on North Armistead Avenue transporting a critically ill patient to the Sentara Careplex. While traveling across West Mercury Boulevard they were struck by a 2002 Chevy Suburban causing the medic unit to flip on its side. Seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment; one individual had life threatening injuries and six individuals had non life threatening injuries. The individual with life threatening injuries, a 42-year-old Hampton man, later died at the hospital. The six other individuals, which included four Hampton Fire Department personnel, have been released from the hospital.

On September 29, 2011, the driver of the SUV, Joanna Kibwe, a 47-year-old Hampton woman who resides in the first block of Riding Path, has been charged with one count of Reckless Driving.

The identity of the deceased is not being released until the cause of death has been determined by the medical examiner.

While sufficient evidence has been gathered to place charges, the accident is still under investigation by the Hampton Police Division’s Fatal Accident Team.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Arrested in Burglary Investigation: First Block of West River Point Drive

The Hampton Police Division has arrested four suspects involved in a burglary that occurred on September 21, 2011.

On September 21, 2011 at 4:08 a.m., Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a burglary in the first block of West River Point Drive. Upon officers arrival they discovered the resident, an 83-year-old disabled Hampton man, awoke and discovered an intruder inside his home. The resident, fearing for his safety, displayed a firearm and shot at the suspect. The suspect was not injured by the round and fled from the scene on foot.

The investigation revealed that the suspects entered home armed with a firearm through an unlocked rear door. Once inside the residence the suspects took a firearm, an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency and jewelry.

Four suspects have been arrested and charged for the above incident; Marcus Anthony Baker, a 20-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 500 block of Newport News Avenue, Michael Daniel Hughes, a 20-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 1800 block of Kensington Drive, a 16-year-old Hampton juvenile male and a 14-year-old Hampton juvenile female. All four suspects have been charged with one count of Burglary While Armed, one count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, one count of Grand Larceny and one count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.

Hampton Police Division Media Release:Suspect Arrested in Homicide Investigation: 600 Block of Westwood Avenue

The Hampton Police Division has arrested the third individual that was involved in a homicide that occurred in the 600 block of Westwood Avenue.

Kwaume Laray Edwards was arrested on September 17, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m. by the Wake County Sherriff’s Office located in Wake County, North Carolina. He was arrested for the homicide that occurred in the 600 block of Westwood Avenue on July 2, 2011. The Hampton Police Division was notified by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office on September 21, 2011, that Kwaume Edwards had been arrested on unrelated charges. He is currently awaiting extradition from North Carolina. Once that is completed, he will be extradited back to Virginia to have the outstanding warrants served on him.

On July 2, 2011 at 6:35 p.m., Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to shots fired in the 600 block of Westwood Avenue. When officers arrived on scene they located an adult male that was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as Ricky Keon Calloway Jr., a 21-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 700 block of Ridgeway Avenue, was transported to a local hospital where he died at 7:10 p.m. on July 2, 2011.

The investigation revealed that the victim was walking on Westwood Avenue when a vehicle approached him and an exchange of gunfire between the victim and the occupants occurred during which the victim was shot. Two homes and a vehicle were struck by bullets in the 700 block of Westwood Avenue. A second vehicle was also struck by a bullet in the 600 block of Westwood Avenue. He will be charged with1 count of Murder, 1 count of Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony and 1 count of Misdemeanor Failure to Appear. The other two suspects, Marcus Troy Moody and Prince Jhamier Bell were previously arrested and are currently in custody awaiting trial.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Arrested in Shooting Investigation: 1200 Block of Gloucester Street

The Hampton Police Division has arrested four individuals that were involved in a shooting that occurred in the 1200 block of Gloucester Street.

On September 12, 2011 at 3:33 p.m., the Hampton Police Division received multiple e911 calls in reference to shots fired in the 1200 block of Gloucester Street. The investigation revealed the victims were driving northbound on Hollywood Avenue when the suspects fired multiple shots into the vehicle. After the driver was struck multiple times, the vehicle he was driving, a 1995 Acura Legend, drove into a home in the 1200 block of Gloucester Street. The victim, a 23-year-old Newport News man, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently in stable condition with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries. There were two other adult males in the vehicle at the time of the incident, neither was injured.

Two homes in the 1200 block of Gloucester Street were struck by bullets. One of the homes that were struck by bullets was also struck by the vehicle. It was occupied by an adult female resident but she was not injured. The other home was not occupied.

As a result of the investigation, four suspects have been identified and arrested for this incident; Javon Alexander Smith, a 20-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the 100 block of Doolittle Road, Kevin Anthony Jackson, a 23-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 500 block of Bellwood Road, Antwain Donta Steward, a 20-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 4400 block of Baughman Court and Jose Nathaniel Dodson, a 21-year-old Newport News man who resides in the 800 block of Forest Drive. All four suspects were charged with one count of Aggravated Malicious Wounding, two counts of Attempting Malicious Wounding, one count of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, two counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling and five counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony. Jose Dobson and Kevin Jackson were also charged with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Violent Convicted Felon.

Hampton Police Division Media Release:Suspect Arrested in Attempt Robbery and Burglary Investigation:700 Block of North First Street

On September 4, 2011, The Hampton Police Division arrested a suspect that was responsible for an attempt robbery and burglary that occurred in the 700 block of North First Street.

On September 3, 2011 at 10:03 p.m. Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a burglary in the 700 block of North First Street. Upon officers arrival they discovered that the suspect gained entry into the residence through the front door while armed with a firearm. After a brief encounter with the resident the suspect fled the scene. The suspect did not take anything nor was anyone injured during the incident.

The suspect has been identified as Curtis Wayne Whitehurst, a 53-year-old Chesapeake man whom resides in the 2600 block of Brook Stone Drive. He was arrested and charged with 1 count of Attempt Robbery, 1 count of Attempt Maiming, 1 count of Burglary while Armed, 3 counts of Use of a Firearm while in Commission of a Felony and 1 count of Possession of a Firearm by a Violent Convicted Felon.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Officer Involved Shooting: 200 Block of North First Street

At 10:25 p.m. officers observed a vehicle being driven by a male that matched the suspect description from the burglary. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the intersection of Buckroe Avenue and Second Street. As officers approached the vehicle the driver displayed a firearm and pulled away. The driver then fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers began searching the area for the suspect. Shortly thereafter officers discovered that the suspect broke into a residence in the 200 block of North Second Street and was holding three residents hostage; a 45-year-old man, a 41-year-old female and a 14-year-old female. The hostages fled from the home and the suspect exited the residence through the front door displaying a firearm. The officers observed the suspect as he fled on foot and officers gave chase. As the suspect was located both the suspect and an officer discharged their firearms. The suspect was taken into custody and no one was injured. A home in the 200 block of North First Street was struck by a bullet, but no one was home at the time.

The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time pending formal charges.

The officer involved has 7 years of experience as a Hampton Police Officer. The Division is currently conducting two separate investigations; one administrative and one criminal. This is standard practice in police involved shootings.

This will be due to capacity crowds (approximately 9, 000) attending the “Get Motivated” seminar being held at the Hampton Coliseum from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists may wish to use alternate routes to avoid delays.

All attendees are encouraged to car-pool and to arrive early. Overflow parking is available for free at Langley Speedway with FREE shuttle bus service to and from the Coliseum. The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating suspects that were involved a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Calvary Terrace.

The investigation revealed that on September 1, 2011 at 1:14 a.m., two adult men whom both reside in Hampton were parked in the 100 block of Calvary Terrace, when they were approached by four men. After a brief encounter the men demanded property and one of the suspects displayed a firearm. One of the men in the vehicle was shot a single time in the abdomen. The suspects then fled the scene on foot. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently in stable condition with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.

There is no suspect information at this time. The investigation is ongoing and as further information becomes available, it will be released.

Hampton Police Division launches Citizen Observer Tip’s iPhone app

The Hampton Police Division is launching HPD Tips iPhone app that enables the public to send anonymous tips to the police and lets the police respond back, creating a two way anonymous “chat”.

Developed by CitizenObserver, a St. Paul MN company, HPD Tips puts a powerful new crime fighting tool into the hands of our community for all ages and demographics. According to Chief Jordan, this capability is a new paradigm for creating safer communities – especially in reaching out to a younger age demographic.

“We’re proud to make this technology available to our citizens free of charge. This tool, along with our existing tip411 program, will help our citizens play an active role in keeping neighborhoods safer, it will engage younger generation in the process, and it will save our agency time and resources.”

HPD Tips iPhone app can be downloaded at the iTunes store or by visiting our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HamptonVAPolice. Citizens can also send an anonymous tip to the Hampton Police Division by texting the word 757HPD and their tip to 847411. The program is 100% anonymous. CitizenObserver’s technology removes all identifying information before the police department see’s it so there’s no way to identify the sender.

Hampton Police Division: Suspect Identified in Homicide Investigation: 100 Block of Doolittle Road

On August 31, 2011 at 4:32 a.m. Hampton Police Communications received multiple e911 calls in reference to a shooting in the 100 block of Doolittle Road. Upon officers arrival they located a male victim that was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso. The victim, Richard Glenn Redick Jr., a 22-year-old Airman whom was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, died at the scene.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim got into a verbal argument with another male inside of an apartment. The two men went outside of the apartment at which point the suspect, displayed a firearm and shot the victim.

The suspect has been identified as Marcus Devall Wingate, a 23-year-old Hampton man whom resides in the first block of East Weaver Road. He currently has warrants on file for 1 count of Murder, 1 count of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and 1 count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Hampton Orders Mandatory Evacuation For Low-Lying Areas

Hampton has issued mandatory evacuations for everyone who lives in a low-lying area that would flood in a Category 1 hurricane. The City on Thursday issued a declaration of local emergency.

Those areas include neighborhoods in and around: Grandview/Beach Road, Harris Creek, Buckroe Beach, Southwest Branch of the Back River, Hampton River, Tidemill Creek, Indian Creek, Newmarket Creek, and as well as any other area prone to flooding. If you live in these areas and do not evacuate, the City will not be able to send rescue teams in during the storm.

The National Weather Service is predicting damaging winds and flooding in low-lying areas, similar to what was experienced during Hurricane Isabel, or possibly more severe. Sustained tropical force winds are forecast beginning early Saturday and could last for more than 24 hours, with hurricane-force winds expected to hit Hampton for an extended portion of that time. Heavy rains and a storm surge of up to 7 feet are predicted.

Residents can check the city flood maps at hampton.gov; click on the hurricane update banner and follow the link at the bottom. GIS maps are searchable and address-specific.

Residents in low-lying areas who can should evacuate to hotels or to friends and family inland.

The city will open a shelter at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Bethel High School, 1067 Big Bethel Road. Residents should bring any medications or special needs equipment; air mattresses, blankets and pillows; diapers, toys, games and books for children; food; and water (recommended 1 gallon per person per day). Pets will be accepted; owners should bring a cage or crate, food and water, and medications. Additional shelters will be opened if needed.

The current forecast shows Hurricane Irene off the Virginia Coast late Saturday/early Sunday morning. However, this is a very large storm, and effects will be felt for hours before and after.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspect Sought in Connection with Shooting Investigation: 100 Block of Hampton Club Drive

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a suspect that was involved in a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Hampton Club Drive.

The investigation revealed that on August 23, 2011 at 10:30 p.m. the victim and three friends, all adult Hampton residents, were in a vehicle in the 100 block of Hampton Club Drive when the suspect displayed a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the vehicle. The vehicle was struck several times but no one was injured. The suspect and victim are not known to each other and the motive for the shooting is unknown at this time.

The suspect has been identified as Paris Tavon Bennett, a 19-year-old Newport News man with a last known address in the 900 block of North Avenue. Mr. Bennett currently has warrants on file for four (4) counts of Attempt Maiming, four (4) counts of Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle.

The Hampton Police Division urges the public to take necessary precautions and ensure that their house doors and windows are locked and secured at all times.

There have been multiple incidents of burglaries in the Armstrong Dr. / Ivy Home Rd. area, in the last three weeks. In most of the cases, the suspect(s) gained entry through an unlocked door or window. Property taken includes laptops, game consoles, TVs, electronics, jewelries, coins, and firearm.

As the Hampton Police Division pursues these cases, it requests your cooperation by following these guidelines:

Make all the members of your household aware of these incidents
Encourage household members and neighbors to be vigilant and attentive
Create an inventory of your valuables; be sure to include model and serial numbers
Reinforce doors and windows; make sure that any automated doors, like garage doors, are functioning properly
Lock windows and secure it by putting wooden dowels or rods
When you see someone loitering or acting suspicious, call 911 as soon as possible

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Larceny from Multiple Vehicles and a Burglary Investigation: Fox Hill Section of the City

The Hampton Police Division is currently investigating a series of larcenies from vehicles and a burglary that occurred in the Fox Hill section of the city. These incidents were reported to police on August 22 and 23, 2011 and occurred overnight.

On August 22, 2011 an unknown suspect(s) entered into ten (10) vehicles in the Howe Farms and Southall Landing neighborhoods. Once inside the vehicles the suspect(s) took U.S. currency, jewelry, electronics and computers. The suspect(s) also gained access into a garage located in the first block of Sugarberry Run using a garage door opener that they located in a vehicle which was parked in the driveway. Once inside the garage, the suspect(s) took several bicycles. These bicycles were later recovered in the 400 block of Fort Worth Street.

On August 23, 2011 an unknown suspect(s) entered into five (5) vehicles in the first block of Kings Landing Lane. Once inside the vehicle the suspects took U.S. currency, jewelry and computers.

The suspect(s) gained access to each of these vehicles through unlocked doors. Residents are urged to lock their vehicle doors and not leave valuable items inside their vehicles. It appears that these incidents are related. There is no suspect information at this time.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Driver Identified in Fatal Crash Investigation: 300 Block of Fort Worth Street

The driver of the scooter, Charles Warren Bulifant Jr., 32-year-old Hampton man that resided in the 400 block of Galveston Court was pronounced deceased at the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling east on Fort Worth Street when it lost control and struck a parked vehicle. The cause of the crash is still under investigation; however alcohol does appear to be a contributing factor.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Shooting Investigation: 1000 block of Carolina Street

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in indentifying the suspects involved in a shooting that occurred in the 1000 block of Carolina Street.

On August 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m., the Hampton Police Division responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Carolina Street in reference to a shooting into an occupied building complaint. Upon arrival officers discovered that the exterior of the residence had been shot multiple times. None of the rounds entered into the residence and no one was injured.

The preliminary investigation revealed that officers responded to a shots fired complaint in the area at 02:56 a.m. Officers responded to the area but were not able to locate anything.

The residence that was shot into is the same residence where Vinnesha Hunter was shot and killed on July 9, 2011. It is unknown at this time if the two shootings are related. There is no suspect information or motive at this time.

Hampton Police Division Media Release:UPDATE Maiming Investigation: 500 block of Greenbriar Avenue

On July 2, 2011 at 1:05 p.m. Hampton Police Communications received an e911 call in reference to a stabbing in the 500 block of Greenbriar Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, they located a victim that was suffering from multiple stab wounds. The victim, Debra Goodson, a 56-year-old Hampton woman, had remained hospitalized until she died on August 9, 2011 at 02:05 a.m as a result of her injuries.

The investigation revealed that the victim and her son were having a verbal altercation. During the disagreement, the son stabbed his mother multiple times in the upper torso. The suspect then fled the scene in the victim’s silver 2004 Nissan Altima.

The suspect, Vernon Lavalle Goodson, a 28-year-old Hampton man, who resides in the 500 block of Greenbriar Avenue, whom had been previously arrested for this incident, has been charged with 1 count of Murder and 1 count of Use of a Knife While in Commission of a Felony and 1 count of Grand Larceny. Mr. Goodson remains in custody.

Hampton Police Division Media Release: Suspects Arrested in Maiming Investigation: 3700 Block of Kecoughtan Drive

The Hampton Police Division arrested two individuals that were involved in a maiming that occurred on August 9, 2011 in the 3700 block of Kecoughtan Road.

On August 9, 2011 the Hampton Police Division responded to a business in the 3700 block of Kecoughtan Road for a complaint in reference to a fight. Upon officers arrival they discovered that an altercation had taken place in the parking lot between five individuals whose ages range from 18 to 21-years-of-age. During the altercation one of the individuals displayed a knife and stabbed an 18-year-old Hampton man in the lower torso. The victim was transported to a local hospital for a single stab wound. He is currently in stable condition with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the investigation, two suspects have been identified and arrested for this incident. Elijah Wells, a 19-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 3800 block of Kecoughtan Road. He has been charged with 1 count of Aggravated Maiming, 1 count of Use of a Knife While in Commission of a Felony and 2 counts of Assault and Battery. Also arrested was Devin Hakeem Phillips, a 19-year-old Hampton man that resides in the 3800 block of Kecoughtan Road. He has been charged with 1 count of Aggravated Maiming and 2 counts of Assault and Battery.

The suspect and victim were known to one another. Both Elijah Wells and Devin Phillips are currently in custody in the Hampton City Jail.

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in indentifying the suspects involved in a larceny from business located in the 1900 block of Cunningham Drive.

On August 7, 2011 at 02:56 a.m. the Hampton Police Division responded to a larceny from business in the 1900 block of Cunningham Drive. Upon officer’s arrival, they discovered that two suspects entered the business and went to the electronics department. The suspect in the red shirt went behind the counter and forced opened a cabinet that contained electronics, while the second suspect acted as a look out. The suspect in the red shirt then removed over nine (9) thousand dollars worth of electronics. Both suspects then fled the store in an unknown direction. Both suspects are described as black males between 18 and 30-years-of-age.

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in indentifying the suspect(s) involved in salvageable metal thefts from the 2100 block of 56^th Street.

On July 30, 2011 at 07:00 p.m. the Hampton Police Division responded to a larceny from business in the 2100 block of 56^th Street. Upon officers arrival they discovered that sometime during the daylight hours on July 29, 2011 an unknown suspect(s) gained access to the rear lot of a business buy damaging the fence. Once inside the suspect removed cooper piping and then fled the area. The suspect is described as a black male between 35 and 45-years-of-age wearing an orange or tan colored shirt, dark pants, black boots and gloves.

The Hampton Police Division is seeking the public’s assistance in indentifying the suspect(s) involved in two commercial burglaries in the City of Hampton.

The first incident occurred on July 26, 2011 at 04:43 a.m., an unknown person used a dumbbell to break out the front window of the Radio Shack located in the 2300 block of West Mercury Boulevard. Once inside the suspect took electronics and then fled the scene foot. The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build wearing a long sleeve red shirt and blue jeans.

The second incident occurred on August 1, 2011 at 03:06 a.m. an unknown person used a dumbbell to break out the front door of the Radio Shack located in the 2000 block of Nickerson Boulevard. Once inside the suspect took electronics and then fled the scene on foot. The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build wearing a long sleeve white tee shirt underneath a black tee shirt and blue jeans.

It appears at this time that the two incidents may be related. Neighborhood Watch Alert - Coliseum Central Area 23666

There have been multiple incidents of burglaries in the apartment complexes around the Coliseum Central area, in the last two weeks. Incidents were occurring mostly during the evening on weekdays. Property being stolen during these burglaries includes TVs, game consoles, laptop computers, power tools, jewelries, and personal items.

In addition, the suspect(s) have targeted the apartment complex clubhouses. We encourage the apartment complex managers and residents to pay particular attention to these properties and report any suspicious activity.
