Region II Holiday Personal Safety Tips

Tis the season to be jolly!

Unfortunately, it's also the season when the Austin Police Department notices a large increase in burglaries. Follow these tips for a safer holiday season.

  1. When going to the mall shopping always try to go during the daylight hours and preferably with a friend. (There's safety in numbers.)
  2. If you do go shopping at night be sure to park in a well lit areas as close to the store as possible.
  3. Don't buy more than you can carry in one arm or in a large shopping bag. By leaving one hand empty this allows you access into your pockets or purse without having to set your bags down in the parkin glot to search for your keys.
  4. Once you've finished your shopping and you're back at your car, put your packages in the trunk!

              Two reasons for this:

A lot of times people go from one mall to another to continue shopping. If a thief sees your packages laying in the car seat it makes it tempting for him to break your car window and steal them or to steal your car to drive somewhere else to unload them.

Even if you're going straight home and the crook is standing on a street corner next to a stop sign or traffic light and sees the package he may break the window to get them or attempt a car jacking.

        5. Now that you're in your car (with the packages in the trunk), lock your doors! This prevents someone from running up and jumping in your vehicle or pulling you out.

BE SAFE AND HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!
